At work, people stared at her. No, they gawked. Finally, the time had come around that Laura felt obligated to have a sit-down with her boss and disclose her rather
unique
condition.
Yeah so
Laura mumbled after she had rambled on for fifteen minutes.
Lauras boss sat there wearing a stunned expression. So the woman from the news a few years back
Laura nodded. That was me, she mumbled.
Lauras boss continued to stare from Lauras chest to Lauras stomach, then back to Lauras face. He looked like he wanted to ask more questions, but he restrained himself.
I see, was all he said. Well, Im sure you know, you have the same rights and entitlements as any other
pregnant worker. Please keep us informed of any necessary accommodations.
Though frowning, Laura nodded. Gripping the edge of her boss desk, she heaved herself up with a muffled grunt. Not meeting her boss eyes again, she slowly turned and waddled out of the office. Laura didnt know why shed kept it quiet for so long. She had wanted to keep her condition a shameful secret. But there was no hiding it.
And shameful it was. Getting pregnant again by a man who was presently serving a prison sentence for kidnapping Laura. In fact, it was almost like Laura had gone out of her way to get knocked up, having gone as far was requesting conjugal visits with Derek. Worse, she wasnt taking care of the first three, and now she was carrying several more. Just going over it in her head made Laura feel miserable about herself. What kind of a person was she?
And now it was all, horribly, out in the open. As the days went by, Lauras clothes tightened, and she struggled to carry her increasingly heavy burden, she could feel her coworkers eyes following her, judging her, scrutinizing her with queer looks and sneers. Laura tried her best to keep up with them, to not fall behind in her paper work, to not be distracted by her own condition, but it was hard. It was all that anyone seemed to see when they looked at her. Laura was secondary to the enormous, outlandish, mound of babies that filled her body.
Oftentimes Laura found herself locked in the bathroom, leaning on the sink, watching her belly heave out and in with her heavy breathing.
She had found an online maternity store for advanced pregnancies, though even that had had few clothes that accommodated her. She had managed to custom order a few things, and it hadnt been cheap. She was wearing a dark blue blouse, the material almost stretched to capacity. Though her belly was still allowed another few inches of advancement before it completely outgrew the material, Laura hadnt anticipated how tight it would feel at her chest.
In that bathroom, her shaky fingers unbuttoned the material now. She wondered if it really was the tightness, or if it was just anxiety. She rubbed her hands up and down the sides of her belly, where it bulged out, having outgrown the prior width of her waist. She was getting so big, so heavy. And she was falling so behind in her work. There were deadlines, observations, and performance reviews. Laura was doing bad all around. If it wasnt for the stupid babies.
No, Laura mumbled aloud, continuing to rub her hands along her girth. She couldnt blame the babies for what she had done to herself. It wasnt their fault that things were turning out this way. She was just stressed. A little overwhelmed. She wrapped both arms around her girth.
At least it was Friday.

When the weekend hit, Laura sprawled herself on her living room couch and did not get up save to eat, use the bathroom, or sometimes haul herself to bed. Most of her time was spent wearing a lightweight, low-cut, maternity dress that was stretched tight over her body. It ended shorter than it was probably supposed to, just below her groin. It hugged every contour of Lauras bloated body, her chest heaving as her breasts bulged against the low neckline of the attire.
Her spine was arched against the back of the couch, her stomach sticking out as she released quiet moans, the babies lurching. Her body was sweaty, her belly throbbing up and down. She spent some time like this, not quite awake and now quite asleep, before finally she snapped out of her haze and pulled herself as upright as she could, allowing her back to curve and her mound to rest more heavily against her lap.
Her nipples burned and Laura watched as her milk moistened the front of the dress. They were bloated and tingly, the size of grapefruits above her belly. Her whole body was pumped full of hormones. They were at their absolute height and left her flushed, almost feverish. Laura was rosy and feminine and plump with babies.
Laura barely paid attention as she pressed the buttons on her remote and stared at her TV, flipping from one channel to the next, with no end in sight. Her finger lifted and pressed the button. At least she was doing one thing. At least something was happening. A program only caught Lauras eye when her channel surfing had brought her to the three-thousands, the true dredges of paid programming. Certain that she was losing her mind, Laura went two channels back and stared at what she saw.
Sitting there, on the television screen, was a blimp of a young woman. Her evidently very-pregnant belly was stretching out her clothes, and the young woman looked truly exhausted. As a matter of fact, that young woman was Laura.
Laura continued to stare at the screen. Experimentally, Laura lifted her arm, but the Laura on the screen didnt mirror her. Instead, that Laura just stared off, seeming to be in a haze.
This wasnt live. It had been recorded! And now it was airing?! Laura felt her breathing thin. Who the hell had been recording her? How was this even possible!?
Lauras eyes madly darted around her living room, and it was only then that she noticed certain things that probably didnt belong. There was a metallic pen sitting in a holder with some others on the coffee table. On a shelf, there was a framed picture of Lauras high school softball team that Laura could not recall putting there. Just random odds and ends that had seemed harmless until that very moment.
Struggling to lean forward, Laura gripped onto the metallic pen. She raised it up to her face, scrutinized it for a while. There were little holes on the cap that didnt seem to have a particular purpose. And there was the tiniest, most secret little lense.
As Laura shuddered, her hand released the pen. It clattered to the ground as she held her belly and tried to rationalize what was going on. Why was she on TV? Why were there hidden cameras in her apartment? Who was watching herand for how long had she been being watched? Did that mean that peoplestrangersknew about her? Knew about her condition? Knew about the ins and outs of her everyday life like this? But that was ridiculous. Laura had to be losing her mind.
Thats when Lauras phone rang. Without really thinking about it, she picked it up.
Do you accept this collect call? said the usual female recording on the other line.
Yes, breathed Laura impatiently. The line dropped and another picked up. Derek?
How are you? Derek said.
And as usual, Laura responded in annoying ways to Dereks voice. This time she was flooded with relief. T-theres something weird going on, Laura babbled, near hysterical. In my apartment.
Derek released a weary sigh. The cameras?
Lauras stomach did a flip. It was you.
Yeah Laura, just relax, said Derek. Just keeping tabs on you. You know I worry.
Dereks statement wasnt even close to believable. Worry!? said Laura, trying not to get too wound up. The babies squirmed. There are hidden cameras all over my apartment. Im on TV! Publicly accessible TV! People could be watching me!
Well of course they are, Derek said, almost proudly. Youre a cock-tease, Laura. And youre very popular in certain circles.
P-popular? Laura was near speechless. She suddenly felt violated. The front of her dress continued to moisten with milk.
There was another sigh from Derek. You dont even realize your effect on people.
Laura sunk back, staring off. This was absolutely insane. H-how? she managed to say.
When you were at work last Wednesday. I have connections on the outside, and I sent someone over. Maybe if you had just deposited the check and stayed in, I wouldnt have felt the need to monitor you. You should be preparing for our life togethercooking, cleaning, resting, and making sure the babies are well nourished. You shouldnt be going off wasting your energy with that job.
Laura gulped. She continued to rub circles on her mound.
I didnt want to miss a moment of this experience. And I figured Id share. You really are getting quite large, Laura. How long do you think you can keep up working?
Laura gazed at her belly. She looked beyond ready to drop but had a good ways to go. Laura tore her eyes away and the next words that spilled from her mouth surprised even her, When are you coming back?
There was a pause on the other line. Soon, he said.
