The first two days were dull. Ryans belly button continued to secrete the strange, transparent goo, and it trailed along down the underside of his abdomen. It was disgusting and strange, and there was no way of hiding it. His parents were quick to assuage his worries.
Its perfectly normal, his mother said.
Ryan was mostly stuck in bed, his parents helping to haul him to and from the bathroom, otherwise he was virtually immobile. He fidgeted and shifted regularly. Often certain limbs went numb, based on what position he was in. Ryan passed his time reading, watching television, or web browsing on his phone. His parents brought his meals straight to his bed for him. His belly button seemed to continuously throb now, and Ryan felt an occasional tension in his abdomen, otherwise things were tolerable. I just have to wait this out, he would tell himself, and try not to think about just what that would entail.
On his third day of impatiently awaiting his labor, the tension seemed to build, though it didnt get quite to the point of being painful. Regardless, Ryan cringed every time he felt it. His belly button was hot and visibly pulsing now. He knew this was the third day, labor day, and in consequence, he was full of nerves. Ryan stayed up late, waiting, anticipating it. Today was the day he would give birth.
But it wasnt.
It was the fourth day, and Ryan awoke stunned, confused, and rather angry. Im so sick of this, he muttered to himself, gripping his sheets tightly in his fists. He grunted, wriggled, and rolled himself slightly to alleviate some of the pain in his lower back.
He had been a normal eighteen-year-old not long ago. But now, even as a half-alien, he was turning out to be an oddball. It seemed he was always pushing things to the edges of the standard. He didnt think he could take it anymore.
Hm, his mother gazed on his quavering mass thoughtfully that day, as though even she was a bit nonplussed. I wonder if its because you waited so long?
Even his parents didnt seem to have the answers. Outlandish as their explanations tended to be, it was better than nothing. Ryan tried his best not to panic, his softened chest heaving with his thin breathing. By midday he found himself restless, sweaty, and fidgeting more than ever. He continuously gripped at his sheets, pushing them around, and pulling them forward. At one point, he grabbed one of his pillows, and began to tear the stuffing out of it. Thats when his parents strolled back into the room.
Its okay son, said his father, rubbing his shoulder, causing Ryan to tense.
Youre building a nest. This is a good sign, said his mother, gently removing the stuffing from his hands, and placing it meticulously around him.
Ryan looked down at the bed, aghast. And it was true. His blankets, sheets, pillow stuffing, and some feathers from the other one, had been arranged around him on the bed in the shape of a nest, cradling his body as he was sprawled there feeling much like a beached whale. Ryans large belly inflated then sunk as he took in a deep breath then released it.
Eughhhh he groaned. He felt so hot and sweaty. He knew his face was flushed. He reassured his parents that he was calm now, and tried to get some rest, but by dinner time, his belly had begun positively heaving, reminding him of powerful hiccups, albeit lengthier, and they left him breathless.
This was only supposed to have lasted three days. Why did he always have to be the exception to rules? Ryan hated that his parents didnt seem so much concerned as they were impressed. He wondered if he didnt despise them by now.
Ohh Something was happening. Feeling winded, Ryan squirmed. He had been dozing in and out of consciousness for hours, but suddenly felt fully awake. This position is bad, he thought, staring down at his sprawled body. He had to get up. Mggghhhh... His body shuddered as he progressively forced himself onto his knees. By then he was panting, and entirely oblivious as to why such a position was necessary. His beachball of a belly was perched on the mattress, his bent legs squashed beneath it, and his ass on his heels. Ryan heaved his belly with all his might, and aimed his navel towards the mattress. He grunted slightly, as he was acquainted with how sore it felt. Despite his exhaustion, he gently prodded the bed with his baseball-sized belly button, then he groaned and allowed his belly to drop to his thighs again.
Almost.
The mound heaved forcefully, Ryan feeling hot tears roll down his cheeks. He wasnt in pain and wasnt sure why he was crying. He might have been frightened. For himself? For thethingsinside him? To this, Ryan was lost. He simply pet his belly, compulsively and continuously, murmuring to the mound as the night wore on.
He would give anything for this to be over. To revert to how he had been before his eighteenth birthday, before he had found out he was part-alien, and had gotten knocked up. Though admittedly, Ryan could hardly picture himself being small, skinny, and of normal dimensions. Not after growing so drastically. And if not normal, Ryan would happily accept being vaguely comfortable again.
It was on his fifthfifth!day of labor, that the process seemed to peak. His belly started contracting violently, practically bouncing against the mattress. Ryan grunted with each, his navel shuddering, and soon he was back to jabbing his belly button forcefully against the bed. He was sleep-deprived and completely exhausted, and the ridiculous motion took every bit of strength he could muster. It was sort of like a spasm. A motion that he couldnt stop, animpulse. He didnt know why he was doing it, just that it had to be done.
An almost animalistic whimper escaped Ryans throat. His belly button ached, and he was just able to sight the way the dimpled skin seemed to open, more goo than ever pushing out of it. It was just odd. Oh god, Ryan groaned out. He was rupturing!
But his belly button seemed to swell even more, tightening, and aching, until the dimple opened farther, and somethingsomething pushed
Something popped out.
It was so gross, he nearly retched.
The dimple closed again, and Ryan was left gaping at the translucent tennis-ball sized goo-covered ball now laying on the mattress, contained by his impromptu nest. He took a shuddering breath and squeezed his eyes shut, a choked cry escaping him as it started happening again.
It was horrifying. He shuddered, yet continued to thrust out his navel to aid with the momentum?
To his dismay, his bedroom door then burst open, and his parents hurried in, all smiles. Ryan gasped as another egg popped out. His belly was bobbing, his back aching, and he birthed one after the next.
Oh Ryan, said his mother, teary-eyed.
Ryan released a hoarse groan and dropped to his side, still arching his back compulsively to get the eggs out. He was reminded of a male seahorse-birth he had once seen online. The seahorse, almost in a panic, thrusting its body to propel its thousands of babies up out of its body and into the water.
He released a choked sob as he gasped, and rubbed the sides of his contracting belly. He tried to ignore the stares of his parents, both of who looked mirthful as ever.
Youre doing great, Ryan.
Mmgghhhh he wiped some sweat off his face. Things continued like that for minutes, or hours, or daysby then Ryan had lost all concept of time. Soon he had enough time to be as self-resentful as he was mortified, and his belly was profoundly smaller, though his belly button was just as large, making for a very strange sight.
Ryan collapsed to his back, his chest heaving erratically. Almost as soon as the contractions ended, his eyelids dropped, and he fell unconscious. When Ryan gasped awake, it was dark outside his bedroom windows, and his parents were gone. He quickly sat up and cupped the underside of his belly, his torso jerking, and another egg pushing out of his navel in a painstakingly slow process as he continued to rock.
Breathing heavily, Ryan kept his hand on his stomach and waited, though it seemed that the labor had truly stopped. He examined his strange belly button, which seemed to be slowly shrinking. His belly was still rather chubby, but softened, and now it resembled the mound of a woman who was four months along. Though it looked rather pointed.
His heart pounding, Ryan sunk down to his back. As he looked around at the piles of eggs surrounding him on the bed, he felt dazed. What he was supposed to do with them all?
His gaze returned to his belly, the familiar conical shape more evident now that he was lying supine. His belly button had continued to rapidly shrink, and was now down the size of a golfball. He reached down and found his fingers absently stroke it, before he caught himself, swallowed, and covered his face with his arm.
Somehow he knew this was only the beginning.
