Recording the samples response to ultraviolet radiation, test seven of forty-nine, said Jones in a monotonous voice. Eve adjusted her visor. The lab went dim, then there was a bright flash of light.
A machine hummed, and the regular lighting came back on.
In the large glass cube container perched on a table in the middle of the small clutter of scientists, was a puddle of green, translucent slime. The slime rolled and twitched, but did not move further.
Anticlimactic though it might seem to an outsider, the slime never failed to fascinate Eve. It had been discovered on the inside of a meteorite the lab had recovered only a few weeks earlier. It was neither fungus, nor plant, animal, bacteria, or any known species on earth. It was not of earth. And it was organic. They had essentially uncovered an alien species.
The lab had taken scrupulous measures to keep the finding under wraps. The last thing they needed was a leak to the media. Eve had been shocked after she had been placed on the clandestine project. She was only a junior scientist, after all. She had been forced to sign pages of liability waivers and nondisclosure agreements before she had even been informed about the details of the post, and the slime.
But she was glad she had been accepted. Everyone was buzzing about in excitement, even the most dour and senior staff members. Of course, Eves work wasnt the most glamorous. She tended to handle clean up more times than not, or to hurry about bringing various pieces of equipment to her senior colleagues, as instructed.
It wasnt until late that evening that the scientists completed the UV tests and decided to retire for the night. One by one, they stripped off their scrubs, and went through the decontamination chamber. Eve was the only one who stayed behind, as she was assigned to clean and sterilize the room.
It took her a few hours to scrub each surface, but she hardly minded. She savored every moment that she spent on the cube, rubbing the surface, watching the slime puddle lay there, glistening beneath the bright, synthetic light.
Eve was so absorbed in her scrupulous task, that when her elbow accidentally hit a lever, she was completely startled out of her reverie. There was a hiss of air. She quickly looked down at the console, to see that she had opened up some air pockets on the surface of the cube. It would cause no notable damage, as it had already been determined that the slime could survive with air or without it.
Eve quickly pushed the lever back into place, and the hissing noise ceased. She glanced at the surveillance camera in abashment, and hoped that she wouldnt be taken off the project because of her small blunder.
Over the next hour, Eve completed the sterilization procedure, went through the decontamination chamber, and left.
It was a forty-minute drive back to her small apartment, and after 11:30PM when she got home. But Eve didnt mind her late nights. It was worth it. She was almost sad that the following day would be Tuesday, and her bi-weekly day off. She didnt like missing even a minute of the action. Even if she didnt conduct tests herself, it was worthwhile to observe them. Eve had even been keeping a private journal to personally log what transpired with the sample on a day to day basis.
Sighing to herself, Eve changed into her night gown and collapsed to bed.
-
Eve awoke late the following day. She remained in bed indulgently, trying to enjoy the warmth and quiet, but her thoughts continued to trail to the lab, and the things she could be missing.
She tried to brush those thoughts aside.
Eve got up and showered, supposing she could use the day to catch up on the growing pile of errands she had been doggedly ignoring for at least the past month. She grabbed a towel and wrapped it around her as she stepped out of the shower, then went to the bathroom mirror to comb her wet hair.
Eve was a twenty-seven-year-old woman of average height and slim build. Her hair was long and thick, often to the point of irritation. It was usually tied back in a tight bun, but getting it there was often a trial, and better accomplished while it was wet.
Eve passed her fingers through her hair, trying to work out the tangles. Her pointer finger passed over the skin behind her ear and encountered something gooey. She paused.
Eve brought her hand in front of her face and found herself staring at the substance which sat at the tip of her pinky finger.
Green slime.
She didnt know how it was possible. She had been so careful in making sure that everything was perfectly clean, and that she was properly decontaminated.
And yet here it was.
Eve hurried to her office. She got a cotton swab and removed the slime from her finger. She then scraped off the residual amount behind her left ear.
She put the small dab of slime into a petri dish, and sealed it shut. She then returned to the bathroom to take another shower, this time with medical-grade disinfectant and a pumice stone. She washed her hair out thoroughly for a second time, cleaned her ears inside out, and proceeded to scrub down every surface of her body until her skin was flushed pink.
She dried off and got dressed, then paused, folding her arms.
She had accidentally brought the slime home with her. It was a breach of her contracts and a potential liability issue. There was the risk of contamination, however that could prove relevant.
Her first action should be to contact the lab, have her apartment quarantined, and possibly get fired for her massive flub.
She knew that it was the right thing to do. She was a scientist, and it was her responsibility to be wary of unknown entity, especially that of alien origin.
At the same time, there was a profound likelihood that the sample in her office was not organic like the sample at the lab, but a dead piece of the slime that had fallen off at some point, and the situation was completely innocuous.
Eve sat down on her living room couch to think. She absently gripped her thighs with her hands.
If she lost her job at the lab, it would be nearly impossible to get another job in her field. Not without an explanation for her firing. And there was no way she would be allowed to explain the sensitivity of the project to future potential employers.
And so it was decided.
Eve would observe the sample to ensure that it was dead. She would dissolve it with hydrofluoric acid, then never speak of the matter to anyone for the rest of her career.
-
It was a few days later, just before Eve was due to destroy the incriminating sample, that it twitched.
At first, she thought her mind was playing tricks on her. She set up a camera to record the slime while she was at work. She reviewed the footage nightly, and a few days later, was surprised that it had twitched again. Without provocation.
The sample at the lab had never moved on its own.
Eve was captivated. She continued to observe the sample. It existed with an absence of stimulation, except for the natural light that poured through her office windows.
It began to shift almost daily.
And it was growing. She measured it weekly, and it was steadily taking up more space in the petri dish.
Eve was amazed.
The larger sample at the lab was hardly responsive despite the constant probing. Meanwhile, her small, smudge of a sample was active and growing. It was a significant breakthrough that she wanted to share with her colleagues, but she couldnt, and so, Eve had no choice but to monitor things on her own.
She got a new journal, and started logs on her sample.
She noticed that it was more responsive when she mumbled to herself, or took phone calls. And its mass was volatile. One day it was so large, it was partially pushing the petri dish cover off, and she was astonished. Another day, it was back down to the size of her pinky finger nail, and she was anguished, because she thought its mass was dying, but then the following day, it was the size of her fist, and sitting on her desk, the petri dish pushed aside.
Eve came to realize that the slime could change its size at will. It was almost as though it couldthink, to a certain capacity.
Eve began to request more days off. Her superiors began to imply that she was ungrateful or indolent, but Eve could hardly bring herself to care. She was dedicated to her studies. Her real studies. And that necessitated that she was home with her active alien sample, rather than with the motionless puddle of slime at the lab, which was currently being experimented on through exposure to various extreme temperatures.
Eves sample wiggled and rolled, and even shifted to different spots on her desk. She tested how it responded to tones of her voice, and it was almost like an animal. When she castigated it with angry tones, it shuddered and drew back. When she used sweet, lyrical tones, it drew closer, and seemed to flutter. It reminded her of her family dog growing up. The slime didnt necessarily understand her words, but it reacted to her tones.
It wasnt long before the slime began to move off her desk. It never got dirty. Dust just rolled off its surface. It slithered about, exploring her apartment, taking the size of a football that day. It tried to take on different shapes, acquiring the rough shape of the mop bucket it encountered in her kitchen. It was imperfect, but quite impressive, and Eve couldnt help releasing a hysterical giggle.
The slime shrunk somewhat, and took the wobbly shape of Eves boot for a moment. Then it seemed to retire, and returned to being an amorphous blob the size of a football. It heaved gently, as though it was breathing. Even could hardly believe her progress.
One morning she startled it.
It had been lingering outside her bedroom, and as she swung open the door, the slime burst into a humid green fog that left her coughing and wheezing and utterly amazed that it could take a gaseous form.
It came back together only a few moments later, shrinking away from her bashfully.
She couldnt help itshe touched it. She knew that she shouldnt have, but she had already breathed it in not a moment earlier. And the slime had proven harmless so far. It was almost like an animal.
The texture was soft and almost oily, but it left no residue on her fingers. She trailed her fingers over it till it stopped shivering. The sensation was wonderful, in a strange way.
The slime launched itself at her. Eve shrieked and recoiled. She opened her eyes when nothing had occurred, but she felt a pressure on her back. Eve craned her neck and gasped at the sight of translucent green wings protruding from her back, waving lazily. She wondered if the slime had seen birds in the window.
Youre amazing, she breathed, as the slime joined back together, and slithered over her. It slid over her legs, and to her feet, creating shoes that were comedic in their largeness. She laughed, and it responded to her amusement, now slithering up her chest, encasing her breasts, and making large, shiny green versions of them that bulged and wobbled humorously on her torso.
The slimes creations were now perfect. It had easily worked out the flaws in its shapes in only a matter of days.
This is insane, Eve murmured as the slime returned to the floor. She didnt think she could keep this to herself any longer. And yet she didnt know how to share her discovery in a way that wouldnt lead to her downfall.
