Though the grapefruit broke down in Ryans stomach in just a few days, some mornings when Ryan woke up his stomach felt tight and uncomfortable. He did not know why. It almost felt as though the tail had eaten another whole thing, though Ryan knew that he kept it well-controlled and under close watch every day.
Ryan found that he felt bloated most of the time now, though it was not significant enough that it made a visible difference when he was clothed.
Despite it, Ryan found that he had mostly lost his appetite during meal times. All day he found himself craving food, and yet he had no actual interest in eating when a plate sat in front of him during dinner with his family. Instead, Ryan would sit there, shuffling food around while trying to keep the tail at bay as it twitched where it was wrapped around his waist.
Despite Ryans disinterest in eating, his parents werent too concerned. After all, Ryan had gained nearly twenty pounds since he had arrived home some weeks before, back when he had been malnourished and frail-looking. Now when Ryan looked in the mirror, he could see that his face was no longer narrow, his cheeks not hollowed out as they had been before. He looked stronger and healthier. That much was certain.
The tail was slowly, subtly, getting longer, and a little bit thicker. Ryan was doing better at controlling it, and had even succeeded at grocery shopping without the tail getting out of line.
Life stabilized, but also became a little mundane. Besides the tail, nothing else was changing for Ryan. His parents had become overprotective, for good reason, and hardly wanted Ryan travelling a block or two from the housejust far enough to run the more basic errands and feel somewhat productive. Aside from that, most of Ryans time was spent in the house, and he was beginning to get sedentary.
One day when Ryans parents were at work, Ryan made himself a large bowl of macaroni and cheese. It had been a childhood favorite. Though he didnt really feel like eating, he tried to force himself to. But instead, Ryan just found himself sitting at the kitchen table, endlessly stirring the meal, sort of playing with it. Though Ryan deeply craved the foodeven felt hungryfor some reason he had no desire to place it into his mouth. And now it was getting cold. Ryan sighed, becoming resigned. As his body sagged, the tail began to unfurl. Ryan tensed, and focused, and the tail actually froze mid-air, on the verge of diving for the bowl.
Now Ryan found himself salivating. He didnt know why, but he relaxed again, allowing the tail to plunge into the bowl and suck the food up. Ryan pressed his lips and closed his eyes, his body shuddering as the macaroni was pumped into his stomach. When the tail had finished, it swayed proudly, dripping goey cheese as Ryan gasped for breath. He felt satisfied, even full. But then he couldnt help himself. He climbed to his feet and walked to the stove, where the remainder of the macaroni was cooling in a large pot. Ryan gripped onto the counter as the tail dove in.

Ryan was definitely looking bloated now. The tails form of eating wasnt easy on his digestive system.
Over the next few days, Ryan continued to allow the tail to eat here and there, on average one meal a day. And yet it still seemed ravenous. It wanted more.
One afternoon, Ryan tore open a bag of chocolate truffles he had bought at the convenience store that morning when he had been picking up stamps for his mother. Ryan unwrapped one, and examined it in the palm of his hand. The tail danced around him, restless but restrained. It seemed better behaved the better it was fed. Ryan couldnt help chuckling. Go ahead, he said, offering the truffle. The tail sucked it down, Ryans eyes rolling upwards as the sweet, decadent gourmet chocolate pushed up the length of the tail and into his stomach. Ryan pulled out another truffle. Consider it a treat, he said, as he unwrapped it the chocolate and delivered it to the tail.
There was a knock on the door, giving Ryan pause. Despite the evocative sensation of the second piece of chocolate pulsing through him, he managed to stand, the tail automatically wrapping around his waist. Ryan smoothed his clothes and answered the door. Hi mom, I left the stamps on
I saw them, thanks sweetie, Tammy answered. I hate to see you cooped up here on a Saturday. Why dont you come with me to visit your Aunt Beth?
Visiting his aunts farm was the last thing Ryan wanted to do. Sure, he said. Let me just get organized. Ryan also knew that if he was resistant to his mother, her rate of pestering him would multiply. She didnt want him straying too far from the house, and yet she didnt want him cooped up all day. She probably thought that having him visit family was a logical medium.
Tammy beamed. Meet you downstairs.
Ryan closed the door then leaned against it, taking a few moments to cool down. The tail stayed put at his waist, content as could be. His heart rate steadied.
Ryan stuffed his feet into some sneakers, then paused at his mirror. He was wearing some sweatpants and a fitted T-shirt, his small belly stretching the material somewhat. Ryan frowned at this. He probably shouldnt have been enabling the tail by allowing it to feed. And he probably should have been giving himself more time to digest food before allowing the tail to pile more on. After all, the tail consumed things whole, not broken down by chewing.
Ill worry about this later, Ryan decided, as he exited his bedroom and went downstairs.
The ride to the farm was only a half hour.
At seeing Ryan, Aunt Beth didnt even embrace him, she just patted his head with one of those calloused hands of hers, as if to remind Ryan that she was still slightly taller than him. And then she gave him a once-over.
You put on some weight, Beth noted, causing Ryan to redden.
It took a little while, Tammy piped in with a smile. But hes finally keeping it on.
Beth nodded, then turned around. Ryan, let me show you some of the renovations you might have missed.
With that, Ryan found himself walking through familiar fields of corn stalks and vegetables, the odor of maneuver drifting over from the barn. Beth was giving them an informal tour, mostly for Ryans sake, though not much had changed over the course of the year.
And those are my new shutters. Dont you love them, Tam? Beth was saying.
I like the color. It brings out the flower box. The sisters yammered on.
Ryan trailed after them, bored out of his mind, and unable to evade the faint preoccupation with food lingering in his conscience. He tried to shake it off. He was becoming obsessive. Thankfully, the tail was not a twitch out of line. Ryan was relieved that he could relax a bit.
Beth was still enthusiastically talking with Tammy. She took a lot of pride in her farm. She was a hands-on, self-made woman. At present she was discussing a new breed of cow shed had imported from Romania. Ryan forced a smile or nodded on the occasions that Beth glanced back at him. But then he ducked off.
Ryan remembered the farm quite well. He had spent of lot of time running around it as a kid. He soon found himself wandering into the hen house. He had always found the chickens to be entertaining. Ryan stood back as they clucked and paced about arbitrarily behind their containment fence. There was a row of chicks trailing after one of the hens. Ryan leaned closer, when suddenly, the tail unfurled.
Ryans eyes widened as the tail dove into the large bin of eggs beneath the coup. The dimple widened, and the tail began to suck the eggs down whole. Ryan was quickly overwhelmed by the endless flow of items invading him. He tried to stagger away, but then the first of the eggs pumped into his stomach, quickly followed by a second. Ryans face flushed as his belly tightened. He sunk to his knees, then hit all fours, as he felt the tail expeditiously suck up several more eggs.
The door creaked, and the tail suddenly swung back around Ryans waist, disappearing beneath his clothes. His forehead sleek with sweat, Ryan looked up to see his mother and aunt strolling in.
And if you see the output, Tammy, these chickens are reallywhawhat happened to my eggs? Theres a good dozen missing! Damn weasels! Beth clenched her fists, then belatedly noticed Ryan hunched on the ground. Ryan? What happened?
Tammy hurried over to help him up.
Nothing, said Ryan weakly, managing to stand. Eggs were still pushing into his belly from the tail, and he struggled to maintain a neutral expression. Imm mmmm j-just a little dizzy. The feeding finished, thank goodness. He tried not to look at or direct attention to his stomach, just hoping that he didnt look as bloated as he felt. He forced a smile as he wiped some sweat off his brow.
Shame on me for keeping you out in the hot sun all day, said Beth, brushing some dust off his shoulder. Why dont we head to the barn. Did I ever teach you show to churn butter?
No! said Ryan quickly. The tail twitched, but he managed to keep it in place. Not a good idea. I mean um Now Beth and Tammy were staring at him. I just need to sit down for a bit. I think Ill head inside.
Beth nodded, looking sympathetic. Suzies playing in the living room. Well be over in a sec.
Ryan nodded. Despite Tammy and Beths reassuring smiles, he could see them become frowns of concern from the corner of his eye as he walked out of the chicken coop and towards the farm house on the opposite side of the property.
