Laura leaned over the toilet, coughing up the remnants of the previous nights dinner.
She had been sick in the mornings for weeks now. It was her only symptom, and she felt fine otherwise. She didnt want to worry her parents, but she was starting to get concerned. There was clearly something wrong with her stomach.
Laura rested her hand against her midsection. She had started eating more to compensate for all the vomiting, and now everything was wrong. Her bodyweight was being re-arranged, and her normally flat stomach had begun to visibly swell outwards. Though not significant, it really stuck out on her slim frame.
Though an eighteen-year-old high school senior, Laura was short and thin for her age, and could have passed as someone a year or two younger.
Despite being an attractive young woman, there was something about high school boys that had no appeal to her. Laura shivered as she remembered the bathroom hookup that had occurred between her and a freshman at the nearby college. He had been quarterback at the high school a year ago, when Laura had been a junior. Derek Chambers.
Laura flushed the toilet and forced herself to climb to her feet. She then went to the sink, brushed her teeth, and headed downstairs for breakfast.
Over the next few days, Lauras episodes of vomiting, fortunately, began to diminish, until it was occurring only once every few days. Lauras appetite returned, in abundance, and she took to snacking on things throughout the day. She walked downstairs one day, a popsicle hanging out of her mouth. They were her little sisters snacks, but she helped herself to them from time to time. She was headed to the kitchen, already planning to get another, when she froze at who she saw standing in the living room, talking to her parents.
Derek.
The college student was dressed in an old letterman jacket and holding some papers in hand it seemed like he was trying to get her parents to sign something. A petition of some sort. Something to do with a neighborhood watch? Laura was too busy staring to pay much attention to what was being discussed. Ordinarily she would have shied away after an embarrassing one night stand. But instead she stood there, frozen, popsicle in her mouth till her tongue went numb. Only then did she remember it, and remove it. Thankfully Derek didnt notice her.
I wish you would reconsider Mr. Mathers, Derek was saying to Lauras father.
I just dont think a neighborhood watch is a good idea, said Lauras dad.
We dont want people wandering around our backyards at all hours of the night. Its frightening, Lauras mother insisted.
But think about the possible alternatives, said Derek.
Lauras father patted Dereks shoulder in that paternal way of his. Well take our chances, he said, as his wife nodded beside him. Thanks for stopping by.
Lauras parents walked off, but Derek lingered, frowning at the forms he was holding. The popsicle melting down her hand by then, Laura regained herself, and was about to slip off, when Derek suddenly looked up, looking her straight in the eye.
Hows the baby doing? Derek said with a smirk.
Laura blinked. What?
-
Laura scrutinized herself in her bedroom mirror. Had Derek been taking a jab at her weight gain? Lauras cheeks burned.
She smoothed out the front of her shirt, only, this did no good for the curve in the front of it which wasnt caused by her shirt. It was caused by her stomach. The fitted fabric made her physique obvious, especially considering how slim the rest of her was.
Laura lifted her shirt up over her abdomen. Yes, her stomach had gotten rather full, but to call her pregnant was just rude.
There was something eerie about Dereks behavior. Laura wished she had known what a creep he was before she had slept with him in that disgusting bar bathroom.
She was on the pill. They had even used protection. There was no possible way that she could have been pregnant.
Laura pulled down her shirt and went over to her desk, sitting in front of her laptop. She went to a popular social networking site, and searched for Derek, finding him quickly enough. It seemed they had a couple of mutual friends. Though not sending him a friend request, Laura browsed what was public on his profile.
Just as Laura had heard, Derek went to the local, but prestigious, college nearby. Scratch that off my choices, Laura thought as she continued to browse. The EMPLOYMENT tab was left blank (figured. Laura had heard that Dereks family was loaded), and under FIELD OF STUDY, Derek had identified himself as a Biology student. Laura was mildly surprised. That was something she had not known about him.
Laura continued to browse through Dereks listed attributes, failing to find things like prick and asshole, that seemed to describe him so much more adequately than everything else. Had Laura suspected even an inkling of Dereks true persona, she would never have hooked up with him, drunk or not.
Laura sighed and turned off her laptop. She was driving herself crazy. Maybe she would buy a pregnancy test, just to be safe. She stood up and headed for the door, supposing she could do with that second popsicle after all.
-
Laura grunted in frustration. She was going on ten minutes of struggling with her pants button. She was sprawled back on her bed, wriggling impatiently as she tried to get her button to go into the little loop on the opposite side. When she finally succeeded, she released a sigh of relief, and sat up, but winced. Oh, she groaned, laying her hand on her stomach. It was uncomfortably tight, almost painful, but it would have to do. All the other pants she had were dirty, or torn, or just
not fitting.
Her stomach had gotten bigger from all her overeating, which was probably a consequence of her anxiety from sleeping with a prick like Derek Chambers. Laura stared down at herself, again compulsively smoothing her shirt.
She had taken three pregnancy tests a week before, and all had come back negative. She hadnt had her period that month, but that was normal for her. There was no way she was pregnant, and yet the weight continued to pile on.
It was not only strange, but irritating that her weight gain had been centered on her abdomen and seemingly nowhere else on her body. She was a self-fulfilling prophesy. Because Derek had mocked her for her weight gain, she was gaining more.
Ill kick the weight, she told herself. Do some extra walking, eliminate snacking, and she was sure she would get rid of it in no time. Her fast metabolism had always been a good friend of hers.
Grabbing her backpack, Laura headed downstairs. She ignored the eggs, bacon, and toast waiting at the kitchen table for her (alongside the heart-signed note left in her mothers handwriting), and walked out the door. It was time to start getting serious about weight loss.
-
By first period, Lauras stomach was grumbling audibly and embarrassingly. She hunched over her school assignment, trying to ignore it. She was so starved, she started nibbling her pencil eraser. Damn it. Lunch was still a couple of hours away. Day 1 of her diet was not going well at all.
Hey girl, said someone.
Laura looked up as her classmate, Gina, took a seat at the desk beside her.
Hey, Laura responded. She straightened, and turned to face her, if just to be polite. Whats up?
Just trying to get through the semester, Gina said with a sigh. She gave Laura a once-over. Been doing some drinking?
A bit, said Laura, though this was a lie. She hadnt been able to get down a drink since her one-night stand.
As Gina chuckled again, Laura only then realized that Gina had been making a reference to Lauras rounded beer gut. Laura clenched her pencil in her fist, suddenly irritated.
Looks like youre going hard, said Gina, patting her own slim abdomen. Girl, youve gotta take me out with you some time.
Yeah. Sure, said Laura tersely. She turned back to the papers on her desk and struggled not to reach down to smooth her shirt.
By second period, Laura felt as though she might pass out from hunger. She excused herself and went to the vending machines down the hall, where she purchased three candy bars and two bags of chips. As Laura leaned down, she heard a pop and felt her pants loosen. Her eyes wide, she grabbed the front of her pants before they could fall down. Looking around, Laura was relieved to see that no one else was in the hallway. Stuffing her snacks into her backpack, she hurried off to the bathroom nearby. There she dug a clothes pin out from the very bottom of her bag. It was actually from another wardrobe incident, only then, her pants had been too loose for her.
Laura pinned the front of her pants closed and stared at the taut fabric, hoping it would hold.
Within days her T-shirts were formfitting, her stomach, all the more visible. She started wearing her short gym shorts for their elastic waistbands and lack of buttons. They came up to her hips, but were pushed beneath her belly.
As she sat down to lunch one day at school (her lunch tray piled with all the junk her stomach had been growling for throughout the morning), her friends giggled good-naturedly at her. She was wearing a sweater dress, and was regretting it. It was formfitting, and did no favors for her physique.
Laura, youre starting to look pregnant.
More giggles erupted from her friends.
Yeah, right, said Laura bitterly. Not. Possible. She remembered how Derek had said the same thing, and felt very hot and angry suddenly. Instead of retorting, she lifted one of her oily, cheese-dripping slices of peperoni pizza, and took a large bite.
Laura, were joking, Veronica intoned, still giggling with the others. You have to come out with us tonight. Show us how its done. Rhondas basement. Shes finally got it all set up.
The basement bar set-up piqued her interest, but Laura was still in a foul mood. Ill think about it, she said.
Veronica simply smiled, and squeezed Lauras shoulder, reminding Laura that her friends werent out to get her. Everyone returned to eating their lunches, quickly falling into conversation about the new math teachers gigantic nose-mole. Under the table, Laura absently smoothed down her shirt.
-
People were staring, she was sure of it. Dressed in a blouse that had originally been baggy on her, but was now extremely tight on her, Laura felt as though she had everyones attention, and for all the wrong reasons. She reminded herself of one of those huge-bellied bus drivers with their skin-tight shirts practically plastered to their bodies.
Im sure Im just being self-conscious, Laura told herself. It was a dark basement, and the place was crowded enough. She was sure people barely noticed her. Laura approached the bar.
Whatll it be Laura? said her friend Rhonda, who was behind the counter, grinning at some guys sitting a few feet away. Let me get you started with a liter of-
Nah, its fine. Just soda for now, said Laura, who was a little apprehensive about upsetting her stomach again.
Rhonda shrugged and poured her a soda. Laura sipped her drink in silence, feeling too tired to really engage herself in any of the ongoing conversations. She froze when she felt someone lean against her back and reach around her, placing their hand against her belly.
Hows the little one doing? Dereks voice muttered in Lauras ear.
Laura tensed and stood up, turning to face him. Derek reached over and took her drink, tasting it.
Soda? Derek said. Glad you have our childs health under consideration.
Before Laura could retort, Derek turned and walked off. Consumed by anger, Laura followed him into the basement bathroom. What is your d-!?
Laura gasped as she was shoved against a wall. Why couldnt she have grown taller, or leaner, rather than fatter? What had she been thinking, following Derek? She was clearly no match for him.
No deal, said Derek, in that smooth way of his. I just think youre growing nicely. So big already. Its cute, really. He rubbed Lauras stomach, which was strangely soothing. Laura tried shoving him away, but Derek was stronger.
And what are these?
Laura gasped as Dereks hands slipped up to cup her formerly-flat chest, where she had developed small mounds with the rest of the weight gain.
Looks like someones getting ready to feed our baby, said Derek snidely. He pressed Laura harder into the wall, his body against hers.
Laura was up to her last nerve with the pregnancy jokes. What the hell are you talking ab-
Laura stopped abruptly as she experienced the strangest of sensations in her stomach. A soft tapping that felt like it was coming from the inside. It was almost like
kicking.
Lauras mouth fell open. She could feel Derek smirking without having to look.
See you around, preggo, Derek said, giving Lauras belly one more pat, before pulling away from her, and walking out of the room.
-
Laura was freaked out for the remainder of the week. Worse, that strange kicking sensation recurred several times. This had to be some sort of a prank. But
how? She could do little more than cup the sensation, feeling scared and queasy. Over the weekend she did little more than curl up in her bedroom, but come Monday morning, she realized she had to confront her parents.
Mom. Dad, she said as she entered the kitchen, holding the underside of her stomach, all firm, and round, and growing. I think I need to see a doctor.
-
Growth spurts are normal for your age, said Dr. Richards, to Laura, who was sitting in a hospital bed in a medical gown. Richards lowered Lauras bloodwork. Lie down.
Laura did so, lowering herself to her back. Dr. Richards reached down and felt around her belly. By then, Laura looked, she estimated, the way her aunt had when she was six months pregnant a few years before. But it had only been four monthsmaybe fivesince Lauras hook-up. She held her breath as that kicking sensation started up again.
Dr. Richards frowned, but said nothing. Instead he rolled up a machine. Lets have a look at whats going on in there.
Laura was just happy her parents had agreed to wait outside, as the doctor pulled up her gown and began to perform a sonogram. The doctor tilted his head, but said nothing, and continued on with the test. Finally, he turned off the machine, and handed Laura some paper towels to clean herself off. He then helped Laura sit up.
What is it? said Laura nervously.
The doctor took off his gloves. Maybe its best we bring your parents in.
Laura nodded and tugged down her gown as Dr. Richards got her parents. Lauras mother squeezed her hand.
Tell us, Laura urged.
Dr. Richards nodded. It seems that you are pregnant.
So it was confirmed. Lauras father seemed stunned silent, while Lauras head was spinning. How could this have happened? Her mother managed to stutter out, W-what?
Dr. Richards continued, In addition to that, you appear to be about four months along. The reason for your larger size is because you are carrying triplets.
Triplets? Triplets? Things had gone from insane to batshit. Laura started to feel dizzy. She woozily squeezed her mothers hand back.
B-but I was on the p-pill, she said weakly. W-we used p-protection.
The doctor observed her stunned stupor. Your bloodwork did not indicate your pregnancy, which is highly unusual. Because of certain missing hormones, it is unlikely that you will go into labor naturally or have contractions for that matter. We will have to schedule a cesarean for your estimated due date.
Laura simply shook her head, in silent denial.
Because of your young age, I would also like to do monthly follow-ups, and get you on prenatal
It was just all too much for Laura to process. How had Derek managed to do this to her? The rest of the day was a blur.
Laura spent a week alone in her room, buried in books and soap operas, trying not to think about the situation. She mother brought meals to her. She was supportive, and gave Laura unwanted pregnancy advice. Her father didnt approach her. Lauras six-year-old sister was too young to really understand what was going on. Sometimes the child visited, prodded Lauras stomach, asked Laura why she was getting so fat.
Laura didnt know what to say.
Eventually she
and the triplets
were forced to go back to school. It was unnerving to think she was now four people in one. The faculty was informed of Lauras sensitive, and confidential, medical condition, while the school accommodated her the best they could, between giving her special enlarged desks for the comfort of her growing body, or allowing her extra rations on the lunch line. She had three babies to feed, after all. Laura found it best to pretend that none of it was happening.
Laura, whats going on with you? Youre getting huge, said Lauras friend, Terry, one day at lunch. A month had passed. She was six months along, and looked eight.
Laura shrugged. Got fat, she said.
Lauras friends burst into giggles. Laura simply continued her meal in silence.
Laura was conveniently given leave from class whenever she wanted. She spent her many bathroom breaks at the vending machines, burying her frustrations in junk snacks. This was probably counterproductive though. She really was getting huge.
At her seven-month check-up, she looked and felt ready to give birth. She sat within a circle of doctors, feeling like a lab experiment. They took turns poking and prodding her, to her discomfort. Her hormone issue was still an anomaly to them. She had dark circles under her eyes from all the kicking, and she had to use the bathroom almost every two hours. The whole thing was driving her crazy. So she gently posed the question, Are they about ready to come out yet?
Dr. Richards looked at Laura in surprise. Laura, we want to get these babies as far along as possible. I know youre small, but if your body can carry them to term, that would be ideal.
Laura frowned down at the rounded mound perched in her lap, her hospital gown tight against her stomach. She sighed and nodded.
It wasnt for hours that Laura got out of there, contemplating skipping her next-months checkup, but her mother had taken control of the whole matter, and Laura knew she wouldnt have it. Laura was getting rather far along, after all.
She appreciated her parents despite their flaws her mothers nerviness. Her fathers distance. They never once asked her who the father was, and Laura appreciated that.
Soon enough, Laura was eight months along, but looked overdue. She had taken to an unpleasant waddle, trying to find ways for the world to accommodate her bloated body, and struggling. By the nine month mark, she felt ready to pop. Though apprehensive, she was glad it was almost over.
Getting her seated on the hospital bed was a group effort, and when it was done, she sat there panting, and rubbing her belly, where the babies had been relentlessly kicking her all morning. The hospital gown could barely fit her anymore. She was absolutely huge.
Laura was proud of herself. She had carried the babies to term. They were big, and healthy, and ready to finally enter the world. She was happy to have her family around her, her mother supportively rubbing her back, her sister curiously feeling for kicks, and even her father, who patted her shoulder.
Dr. Richards entered the room, frowning at his charts. Im afraid theres a problem, Laura.
Lauras face fell. What?
The babies are fine, said Dr. Richards, offering Laura a knowing smile. But Im afraid your blood work is looking bad. All your vitamin levels are down. Your blood level is extremely low. It is too dangerous for us to proceed with the cesarean.
Laura was stunned. Wait, but-
This kind of thing happens occasionally, said Dr. Richards, as Lauras mother nodded, clinging to Richards every word. Lets wait a week. Put you on some extra vitamin dosages. See if we cant get your levels up.
But theyre ready now, Laura practically groaned. She was tired of being huge. Going to school was mortifying enough, with all the stares. Her chest had gotten fuller round B-cups and so tender that it was torture to wear bras. Her pregnancy was driving her insane. She couldnt imagine another week of growing.
Dr. Richards offered her a sympathetic smile. Sorry, Laura. For now, why dont we proceed with a regular check-up, and then
Laura stopped paying attention, instead rubbing her belly as she stared into space. She felt as though she was trapped in her own body. She took several deep breaths of air.
-
A week later, when Laura went back to the hospital to do her scheduled cesarean, she was told that her bloodwork still wasnt good enough, and the same was said at her appointment the week after that. Her mother helped her clamber into a bathroom, where she vomited, though she wasnt sure whether it was morning sickness or pure horror. Her belly was getting wider than she was, her belly button protruding like a golf ball. Her back started burning when she was on her feet for anything more than a few minutes. She was beginning to look like she had a beach ball affixed to her midsection.
At least her parents stopped forcing her to go to school. She sat at home, sweating and panting. Her little sister took to fanning her, mostly in amusement. The child pulled up her shirt and fanned her sweat-sleeked dome of a stomach, not that it wasnt appreciated. Any small exertion drained Laura, and left her gasping for breath.
At her next hospital appointment, Laura had her parents drop her off, telling them she would call them if there was good news. Laura had a nurse wheel her to her appointment, where her blood work was reviewed.
Dr. Richards sighed. Still a little below range.
Laura rubbed her belly. It was becoming a nervous habit. Doc, Im three weeks overdue with triplets, she said, desperately rubbing at the kicks coming from within. You have to help me. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead.
Richards shook his head. We cannot perform surgery on you while your levels are out or range. I could lose my license. The hospital could be sued. But what we can do is increase your diet by thirty percent, and possibly up your dosages of
Laura blocked out the remainder of what the doctor was saying, falling into a sweaty, bloated haze of distress. After the appointment, she had a nurse wheel her outside for some air. There she fumbled with her cell phone, planning to call her parents to pick her up.
There you are.
Laura looked up, and was shocked by who it was.
Derek.
A landslide of anxiety, anger, and humiliation crashed down on Lauras chest.
Wow. You look ready to burst, Derek remarked with a smile.
No thanks to you, Laura returned angrily. What are you doing here?
Im here to pick you up.
What?
But Derek was already wheeling Laura out into the parking lot, and Laura was helpless to stop him.
