Ryan opened his eyes and stared up at the white lights above him. Out of instinct, he flinched and recoiled, but then a familiar face appeared.
Youre awake, said his mother, Tammy, tears streaming down her face.
Ryan slowly sat up. His body felt weak and sore. He blinked a few times, allowing his eyes to adjust. Mom? he said hoarsely. Dad?
His parents embraced him, and Ryan heard murmurs and clapping around him. As the embrace ended, Ryan could see that he was in a hospital setting. The room was full of doctors, nurses, reporters, and police officers. Whats going on? said Ryan, directing his gaze back to his parents.
Tammy choked back a sob. Ryan, youve been missing for a year. What happened to you?
Ryan was momentarily stunned. He looked down at himself. Everything was foggy. I dont remember.
-
A week later, Ryan was discharged from the hospital with a clean bill of health. He had gone through numerous interviews with the local authorities, but had maintained the same account that he had told his parentshe honestly didnt remember where he had disappeared to, nor what had happened to him. It was like he had blacked out a year of his life, because the last memory he had was of sitting on his porch swing on the night of his seventeenth birthday, gazing at the stars.
That meant he was eighteen now.
Ryan walked into his old bedroom. Though it was coated in a layer of dust, nothing had changed. It was like his parents hadnt touched it since his disappearance. Ryan approached his full-length mirror.
He had always been small and short. Only now, he was thinner than he remembered. He pulled up his shirt to observe his concave stomach and his showing ribs. He peered at the dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked unhealthy.
The bedroom door opened, and Ryan looked up as his mother entered the room. Ryan could tell that she had been crying some more. She walked over to his bed and sat down, before patting the spot beside her. Ryan joined her there. Tammy clasped one of his hands in hers.
Your grandfather passed away over the fall, Tammy said, her voice thick with emotion. He left a trust in your name. He never lost faith that we would find you.
Ryan could do little more than stare. He felt numb somehow, so he just nodded.
Tammy sniffed. Well talk more in the morning. Why dont you try to get some rest? She held his hand for a moment longer, before releasing it, getting up, and exiting the room. She left the door open, but Ryan didnt mind.
In her wake, Ryan laid back in the bed, still fully-clothed. He folded his arms behind his head.
According to his doctors, he had been found unconscious by an agricultural worker in an overgrown field a few miles south from where he lived. No one knew how he had gotten there. There had been no signs of any vehicle being through that area for years.
Ryan supposed that he should have been grateful, but for some reason, he just felt empty.
Ryan closed his eyes and tried to get some rest, but just found himself fidgeting over the course of several minutes. It wasnt long before he found the main source of his restlessness. It wasnt an itch or a discomfort, just an unfamiliar sensation of pressure on his tailbone that didnt rest well with Ryan. He got the sense that something was happening to him. Something that he wouldnt like.
He slid his hand behind him, to the base of his spine, where it encountered a gentle, firmly-placed lump. Hed endured several body-checks throughout his time at the hospital, and no doctor or nurse had mentioned it. Ryan was almost certain that the lump had not been present that morning.
His arm curled behind him, he absently rubbed the lump for several moments. But if anything, the pressure only seemed to increase with the contact. With a sigh, Ryan withdrew his hand. He felt almost jaded, yet he didnt know why.
-
The next morning, the lump seemed larger. As Ryan got showered and dressed, he tried not to pay it any mind.
He joined his parents downstairs. Both were sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for him to join them for breakfast. In the past, Ryans parents had rarely waited for him and hed be lucky if he could scrounge together a bowl of cereal before they would start badgering him about chores.
But today today, the kitchen table was set up nicely, like it was a holiday or something. Large dishes of food covered the surface. There were all Ryans breakfast favoritescheesy eggs, bacon, sausage, chocolate chip pancakes, belgium waffles, sweet cheese crossaints, english muffins, eclairs. There was even a plate of the strawberry poptartsRyans favorite.
Ryan grabbed one as he sat down. Wow, mom, you even broke out the fancy napkins, he joked as he munched.
Ryans father, Samuel, released a snort, as though trying and failing to laugh at the remark. His face was strained. Ryan was surprised to see that his parents were holding hands on the table. It was weird and sentimentalnot something his parents usually did.
Ryans smile softened. He didnt miss his parents the way that they missed him. In his perspective, it was like he had just seen them yesterday. But it had been far longer than that.
What are you waiting for? Tammy forced out, still wearing her strained smile. Dig in.
Ryan didnt need to be told twice. Just the sight of the food roused a powerful hunger deep within him. He loaded his plate with pancakes and waffles, creating a disorderly stack, before slathering it with copious amounts of maple syrup. And then he ate and ate until he felt sick. But for some reason, he ate some more.
Ryan loaded his plate with eggs, sausage, and bacon, then crammed it into a bagel, before he continued to gorge himself. Still working on the sandwich, he compulsively grabbed hold of a croissant. Just on the verge of taking a bite, he froze, his eyes widening. He met his parents blank stares. E-excuse me, Ryan said, getting up, and walking into the downstairs bathroom.
Ryan closed and locked the door behind him, before breathing and pacing for a moment. He sat on the edge of the tub and rocked himself for a little while. Then he got up again, and was back to pacing.
It was the lump over his tailbone. The tension there was increasing. Ryan couldnt help himself from sliding his hands down to the lump, groaning as he did. It seemed bigger now, more prominent and defined. But it wasnt just that. It was presently growing, pushing out. Ryan pressed his lips and tried his best not to grunt aloud at the combined arousal and discomfort of the distending lump. He sunk to his knees, hugged himself, and folded forward, panting as it pushed out more and more.
And then it ended, the tension subsiding, but not disappearing all the way. Ryan hesitated, and slid his hand down behind him, to the base of his spine. Where the lump had been was now some weird appendage. Ryan climbed to his feet and slid down his waistband somewhat, before turning his back to the shower door mirror and craning his neck to see what was going on.
It looked almost like a tail. A short, kind of stumpy one, flesh-colored, much like the rest of him. It curved down, no more than a few inches long. It twitched slightly, and Ryan could do little more than stare.
He should have been freaking out at that moment. He should have been halfway to the hospital. This was in no way normal.
But for some reason, Ryan just felt queasy, and a little inconvenienced. He adjusted the waistband of his basketball shorts, effectively hiding the tail within. With that, Ryan tugged down his shirt and returned to breakfast.
-
Ryans parents chalked his gluttony up to malnutrition. Ryan honestly didnt know what it was.
Ryan spent most of the day in his room, bouncing a ping pong ball up and down against a paddle. There was talk of getting him enrolled in senior year of high school, but he had missed ten months of school, not including summer. There was also talk of getting him into a GED course so that they could fast-track him into college.
Though a straight-A student, Ryan wasnt feeling very motivated. His trust fund was substantial, apparently. His mother said that he could take his time if he wanted to. Take time off, if need be, and work on getting his life back together.
Ryan was indecisive about that as well. All he really knew at that moment was that the thing was growing. He could feel it. He didnt know how long it would go on. Catching the ball, and lowering it to his nightstand alongside the paddle, Ryan laid down on his side on his bed. He slid his hand down to his lower back, cupping the small appendage. He didnt dare pull it out of his pants.
He should have been horrified, but instead he just felt mildly nervous. Ryan wasnt sure why. He absently rubbed the thing, up and down. This would be over soon enough. In due time.
