“It’s a bit of a shock,” said Sam, Connor’s girlfriend.
“I don’t know what to say. It’s the stress from work, I guess,” said Connor.
“I think you should see a doctor,” said Sam.
“It’s just a little weight gain. I’ll kick it in no time,” said Connor.
“Connor, I saw you a month ago. You looked nothing like this!”
“Sam, I don’t have time to argue with you this morning,” said Connor, dumping a stick of butter into his blender atop the several scoops of chocolate-chip ice cream. “I have to head to work.” He ignored the disgusted looks Sam was giving him. Lately, his smoothie was the only thing that gave him energy for the day. He turned on the blender, and after it finished, he poured his beverage into a large water bottle, where he immediately began slurping it down.
“And I don’t like this new job of yours,” said Sam, following Connor into his bedroom. “What is their angle? They’re keeping you away from me, keeping you away from your family-“
“You’re paranoid,” said Connor, momentarily putting the smoothie down on the dresser so he could change. He uncharacteristically slipped into the adjoining bathroom, closing the door behind him before Samantha could follow him in.
He slid off his robe, still unnerved at the sight of actual breast on his chest. He wondered if Sam had noticed? He could barely meet her eye. The mounds weren’t normal—they were too plump now. Not drooping, just full, and quite…feminine. He shuddered. His nipples were larger as well, protruding, always erect now. It was arousing. Connor’s eyes slid down to his abdomen.
His belly made his look as though he was six months pregnant. There was no way to hide it in even his looser clothes. It was unusual how quickly he had come to develop such a gut. But Connor was too busy to deal with it. His internship was just too demanding.
“I’ll get a personal trainer or something, I swear,” he called through the door, masking the distress from his voice. He squeezed on a tank top, one that compressed things a bit. “And I’ll lay off the fast-food,” he added as he pulled on a pair of briefs. Strangely, there was a tightness at his hips. He wondered if he had gained weight there as well.
Connor next pulled on a loose t-shirt, and a pair of jeans that necessitated an elaborate web of clothespins as they would neither zip nor button. He pulled his lab coat around his shoulders and began to button it closed. It had gotten a little tight at the chest and stomach, but it still fit.
Sam’s arms were crossed when Connor exited the bathroom. She was still wearing her stubborn expression.
Connor lifted his shake from the dresser, went over to Sam, and gave her a kiss on the temple. “Tell me you’re not this angry about a couple pounds. You’re not that shallow, are you?” Now he had turned the tables.
Her face reddened. “I—no—of course not!”
“Then I’ll see you tonight.” Connor said and headed off to work.
He would later have to cancel on Sam yet again that evening. There was no rest for the weary.
5 Weeks
Connor stared down at himself uneasily. Diamonds had formed between the buttons in his lab coat as it stretched to accommodate his expanding body. He could see the way the flesh of his belly filled the diamonds, pushing out beneath the t-shirt he was wearing.
He gasped as someone suddenly kissed his ear. Looking up from his desk, he saw his boss leaning over his shoulder.
“Can I have a word with you in my office?” she whispered. It was late, and most of the others were gone.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” said Connor. “I’m in a relationship.”
“So am I.” Reed shrugged. “Who cares?”
“I have to go to the bathroom.” Connor climbed out of his seat, with some difficulty, and headed to the men’s room as he clutched his rounded gut.
“You can’t keep walking away from me,” Reed called after him.
But Connor legitimately did need to go to the bathroom. His body felt funny. That weird pressure from a few weeks ago was back and he felt like he would burst.
“Ohhhhh…nggghhh,” Connor groaned, gripping the counter, head bowed as he gasped for breath. Sweat dripping down his nose, he stared in shock as his stomach tightened, until he could visibly see it swelling outwards, his lab coat growing impossibly tight, before five buttons snapped off in quick succession, giving his belly clearance to push through.
He gasped, feeling suffocated, until he realized that this was because of how tight the chest of his lab coat had gotten as well. He undid the buttons there, allowing his mounds to pop out of the coat’s opening, only then realizing that the front of his tanktop had started to tear. Connor stared at how round and plump his breasts had become, flushed, and sweaty, nipples swollen and aching unpleasantly. The mounds were so full and round, it seemed to far exceed the parameters of ordinary weight gain or gynecomastia. Connor watched them bob with his every breath.
“What’s happening to me?” Connor groaned, clutching his gut. For weeks he had been too overwhelmed with work to acknowledge what was going on, but he had finally come to realize that none of this seemed natural. He looked as though he was pregnant, for godssakes!
Not thinking he could remain standing for much longer, Connor made his way into a stall, closed and locked it, then sat down at the toilet, staring at the way his belly perched against his lap. He rubbed the plump mound, working theories through his head. Was it a tumor? No, even tumors didn’t grow so quickly. Inflammation? Only if it was a ridiculous amount? Or had he exposed himself to something experimental in the lab?
Though the likeliest possibility, if it was true, his job would be at risk were his superiors to find out. They would think he was a liability. The whole case would go to court.
But did his job even matter at that point? His health was at risk. Though fessing up would lose him the internship, and be severely damaging to his efforts to finish graduate school and get a job, it was something he knew he would have to do. Connor panted as he continued to rub his stomach.
He climbed out of the stall, and went to a locker, where he found a spare lab coat that belonged to a large-framed colleague. It just about fit him. Taking a deep breath, he walked out of the bathroom and back into the lab. Reed was still there.
“Everything all right?” Reed said. She gave him a quick once-over, but said nothing about his sudden increase in weight.
“No, Reed, actually, I want to talk to you about something,” said Connor, still sweating.
“What is it?” she said.
“It’s, well, um…”
“Connor, you should feel comfortable telling me anything. I’m your boss.”
Connor took a deep breath. He had to do this. His health was at risk. Maybe even his life. “It’s…nothing. I think I’m gonna head home and get some rest.”
Reed nodded. “See you tomorrow morning? Bright and early?”
“Bright and early,” Connor echoed, grabbing his briefcase and heading out.
6 weeks
He looked pregnant. No—fully pregnant. At term with child. And he was only getting bigger by the day.
It took all he had to work up the courage to go to the Emergency Room at his local hospital. He sat in the waiting room, awkwardly filling out paperwork as he waited for his name to be called. He felt a strange sensation in his belly—the vaguest hint of that pressure that had happened to him a few times before. It wasn’t upon him, but he could sense it slowly creeping up. He didn’t know when it would hit. A few days? A few hours? It was scary, but he knew it would happen eventually. He could feel it subtly building and building, much the way his weight was.
Connor’s name was called. He stood with some awkwardness and walked to the counter. He swallowed as the receptionist openly gawked at him.
“I think there’s something growing in my stomach, and I-I—”
“Sir? Can you be a little more specific? What is the problem?”
“I’m being as specific as I can.” Connor held his belly. "This started happening to me five weeks ago. I don’t know what it is, a-and I—”
The receptionist looked at his identification card. The lab ID had been all Connor had had on hand. Her eyes widened, and she motioned to a nurse nearby. Soon Connor was provided with a wheelchair. He hesitated, and sat down.
“Room 237,” the receptionist said, and Connor was being wheeled off.
Connor poured sweat as he was brought to a hospital room. He was helped into a gown, the nurse gazing at his plump B-cups in a mixture of shock and amazement. He was then helped onto the table, and assured that the doctor would be there shortly.
Connor hummed to himself as he waited. He could feel his heart racing, but tried not to panic. The main point was that he was finally seeking medical help. He would be fine. Who knew, the lab probably wouldn’t even find out a thing.
The door opened and the doctor walked in, looking over his charts.
“Mr. Connery, it’s good to see you. What seems to be the pro…” the Doctor trailed off as he looked at Connor.
“This,” said Connor nervously as he held both sides of his belly.
The doctor frowned. “How long has this been going on?” He helped Connor lie back as he did an exam, pressing Connor’s belly here and there, taking notes on his clipboard.
“Five weeks.”
“Five weeks!?”
Connor gulped. “It’s bad, isn’t it?” He knew what it looked like. A massive tumor. Connor’s insides tingled, strange and unpleasant.
The doctor frowned again, flipping through his pages, digging deeper into Connor’s file. “I see that you’re now employed by Cromwell Zoology lab?”
Connor sat up, with some difficulty. He clutched his navel, panting. “Yes, but I’d appreciate if you didn’t tell my employer that I came here,” he said breathlessly.
“Of course not.” The doctor gave him a reassuring smile. “I’m just going to have to, uh, make some quick calls. In the meantime, I’ll have a nurse come in and do your blood work.”
“Thank you doctor.” Connor watched the doctor leave and absently rubbed his navel. He had felt that subtle pressure slowly climbing throughout the hours he had spent at the hospital so far. His temple continued to sweat as he told himself he would be fine. Yes, he was quite large as he was, but people didn’t explode. What was the worst that could happen? Another inch or two of beer gut? He forced out a awkward chuckle, continuing to rub his plump mass.
But the minutes kept passing. A half hour, and then another. The pressure continued to build and build. He wanted to get the doctor, but he didn’t want to move, lest he trigger another growth spurt. He took deep breaths in and out, trying to relax his body, but his stomach just continued to tense.
“What’s taking so long?” he groaned to himself. It felt as though he had been waiting two hours already. The pressure climbed and climbed, and he wasn’t sure how much more he could take. His nipples started to ache. He watched them distend, then bulge out in the gown, pushing hard against it, like they wanted to tunnel through. He felt his breasts tensing; filling.
“No, no, no, no, no…” Connor groaned, his back arching as his stomach tightened. “Doctor!” he panted, squeezing his eyes shut. “I—I need a—!”
The door opened, and several pairs of feet entered the room.
“Help is here,” someone said, taking his hand. Connor opened his eyes just enough to see that it was… Reed! He stared in shock at his boss, and several of his colleagues. What were they doing there!?
He didn’t have the time to ask. The spurt was upon him, and the cat was completely out of the bag. “Nrrrrrrghh…” Connor groaned, unconsciously squeezing Reed’s hand as his hospital gown tightened and his belly swelled all around, as though he was filling up more and more with whatever was inside of him. His growth pulled on the gown strings, and they came loose, causing the back to fall open. “Unnnghhh…” he groaned as his belly pushed out several more inches. When it was over, Connor tried to catch his breath. He looked overdue with twins. He was absolutely immense. “I don’t know what’s happening to me,” he weakly admitted, his body flushed, breasts tight and throbbing. Reed smiled at him sympathetically. James was busy staring at his C-cup breasts.
“Well you’re in luck, because we do,” Reed said.
“What?” said Connor.
“I suppose it’s time for us to come clean. We’ll explain everything when we get back to the lab.” She motioned to help him up, but he resisted.
“You’ll explain now,” said Connor, still breathless, his heart pounding. His face was flushed and the sweat on his chest was seeping through the hospital gown, making it transparent, and plastered to his body, but he barely noticed. James sure did. James stared as Connor’s large nipples wiggled with his panting and fidgeting.
Reed sighed. “Very well. You see…you were chosen because of your good medical history. It was nothing personal. In fact, the experiment guarantees you an early degree and full tuition reimbursement!”
“Experiment!?” said Connor. He had barely heard anything that came after it. “You’re experimenting on me!? Without my consent!? That’s illegal!”
Reed threw another of her sympathetic smiles. “Not exactly, dear. I’m afraid you must not have read the contract you signed when you were hired. It gave us full permission. Go ahead and press legal action. Many of our past interns have tried.”
Connor was speechless.
Another intern bustled about, replacing the saline bag connected to his IV line with a bag containing a dark green fluid.
“Just something to help with the growth spurts,” Reed explained.
“Help stop them?”
“Oh no,” said Reed. “Just help soften your body a bit. To handle them better.” Connor reached down to pull out the IV line, but Reed caught his hand, tutting him. “The contract,” she reminded. One of the other interns brandished the paper in question, as if mocking him. “We have the right to do whatever we want to you, short of causing you permanent harm. And you’ll come to realize this is all temporary,” Reed said.
Connor reached over and snatched the contract from the intern, gripping it tightly, as he squinted at the tiny print.
“And don’t think of destroying it, either. We have several copies,” Reed added, causing Connor to tremble in anger.
But he took a deep, soothing breath, trying to calm himself down, just enough to ask, “Care to tell me what this experiment is, exactly? Besides inflating me like a fucking blimp!?”
“Easy there,” said Reed. “You don’t want to upset the fetus.”
“Fetus?” Connor swallowed. He was pregnant!?
“You see…we impregnated you with a genetically engineered elephant fetus.”
