“I’m sorry Sam, I’m just not free tonight,” said Connor, signing off on yet another report. He threw a wave at a coworker who was leaving the lab. “I know, yeah, they’re working me to death. But I need this internship. Listen, I’ll make it up to you, I promi- Hello? Sam?”
Connor sighed as he heard a dial tone on his phone. It was the third weekend in a row that he had cancelled on Samantha. He really was being worked to the bone. Connor frowned at the pile of paperwork on his desk. It looked like it was going to be another all-nighter.
The lab was quiet. Connor was an aspiring animal biologist. He had taken the low-paying internship to get himself some work-experience and help him fund grad school. He wished he could say it was worth it. Animal biology wasn’t exactly a booming field. But what else could he do? He needed the job. He needed to finish school.
It was around 2AM that all the words started to blur and Connor began to doze off. He awoke with a small yelp from a pinching sensation. He clutched his stomach, but there was nothing there. Had it been a mosquito or something?
“Connor, what are you still doing here?”
Connor swiveled in his chair to see his boss, Doctor Reed, standing behind him, a cup of coffee in hand.
“I was just finishing up some paper work.” Connor threw a glance at the clock. It was 3AM and he had to be back at 6.
“Well it’s the middle of the night. Time to go home. That’s an order.”
“Understood,” said Connor, nodding robotically.
Connor watched his boss turn and walk off, not noticing the emptied syringe she had clutched in the pocket of her lab coat.

“Sorry Sam, my boss called me in again. I can’t turn her down. You know how it is,” said Connor, holding his phone between his ear and his shoulder as he stuffed random papers into his briefcase. “This internship is intense. I barely get a minute to myself these days.”
Connor was tired of arguing with Sam. He was tired of everything. He barely had time for the things he used to do, like going out on dates, eating at home (now he just grabbed things on the go at corner stores and fast food restaurants), sleeping, studying, and…working out.
Now clutching his briefcase in one hand, Connor grabbed a bag of cheese curls from his cupboard with the free one. He took to stuffing several into his mouth at once as he walked outside and to his car, trying to balance everything. Connor opened the passenger’s side door and threw his briefcase inside.
“Sam, I’m driving now, I have to go,” Connor said through his full-mouth. “I’m sorry. I’ll talk to you later.” He hung up the phone.
As Connor closed the passenger side door, he realized he had forgotten his breakfast smoothie. He went back into the house.
Because of his lack of time for proper meals, he had taken to eating protein smoothies. His boss had suggested it, considering his intensive schedule. Reed had even given him an extra can of protein powder that she’d had at the office. And so, Connor had taken to the nutritional beverages. Well, at least they had started off as nutritional. Banana, spinach, almonds, and a couple spoons of protein powder. The bland taste, however, had compelled Connor to add in several scoops of ice cream, some bars of crushed chocolate, heavy cream instead of milk, and even a few spoons of butter. Soon there had been no room for the spinach or almonds, so he had simply taken them out.
Connor reached into his fridge to withdraw the 1 liter smoothie he had made for himself earlier that morning.
He distractedly sucked on the straw, only paying slight attention to the way his usually-tone stomach was beginning to bulge out over his belt.
He was too busy to care.

Connor groaned. Just the sound of his coworkers singing “happy birthday” in the next room made his stomach grumble. He kept his head down and tried to focus on his work.
“Connor, what are you doing out here?”
Connor froze. He swiveled his chair around to force a smile at his boss. “I’m not in the mood for cake,” he lied. Truthfully, he was trying to watch what he ate.
“Aren’t you going to go in there and wish David a happy birthday?”
“I shouldn’t…”
“Excuse me?”
Connor held in a groan. It seemed like every day was someone’s birthday, whether it was a head scientist, an intern, or janitorial staff. Everyone’s birthday was celebrated and human resources always seemed to procure the biggest and tastiest of cakes. They were thick, gooey, and fattening, every day, a different flavor. Worse, there were always leftovers. Some days Connor walked away after eating three large slices. Once they had even offered to let him take the rest of a cake home, and somehow he couldn’t resist.
“I’ll be right there,” Connor said.
His boss nodded and walked off.
Sighing, Connor patted the pile of papers on his desk and joined his coworkers in the next room. He was promptly provided with a large piece of cake, and it looked so delicious, he couldn’t resist digging in. So absorbed was he in the cake, he barely noticed how several of the scientists had taken to looking him over, mainly, the way his belly was beginning to bulge out in the button-down he was wearing.

“Hahhhh…hhhhh…ahhhhhh…” Connor groaned before dropping to his back, his boss panting beside him. Connor wiped some sweat off his brow. “Does this mean I get the night off?”
“Are you kidding? We’ve got work to do.”
Connor rolled his eyes as he sat up. He self-consciously gazed down at his rounded stomach, then climbed out of bed and pulled on his boxers. He was a little uneasy by how fitted all his clothes seemed to be getting on him. Worse, his pecs had softened—even plumpened somewhat, like those guys on steroids at the gym. He was astounded by how quickly he had managed to put on so much weight. Well, it wasn’t as though he had time to work-out anymore. Not with the internship taking up all his free time.
“Sorry,” he said awkwardly to Reed. “I don’t usually look this out of shape. Just stress I guess.” He headed into the bathroom to get dressed.
“What are you talking about? You look fine,” Reed called back.
Connor pulled on an undershirt, which felt tight, especially at his chest. He then pulled on a button-down, irritated by the way his belly protruded against the fabric. He tried sucking it in, but this produced few to no results.
Connor then jerked on a pair of jeans, and as he attempted to button them, he felt a sudden, overwhelming pressure in his stomach. He grunted in confusion, clutching his abdomen as the pressure built, his face turning red from discomfort. Then, to his shock, his belly began to push outward, swelling to make way for the pressure, his chest doing the same, getting rounder, plumper, nipples aching and bulging out, until finally, the pressure subsided, and he was left gasping, and full, the mounds on his chest bloated like A-cup breasts, and nipples unnaturally erect. Connor panted for several moments, staring down at himself, before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.

“Get him on the table,” said Doctor Reed, as two other doctors helped carry Connor into the lab.
“What happened?” said Doctor James.
“It was very unusual. He seemed to have had a growth spurt, then he passed out,” said Reed as Connor was lowered to a table. She did not look displeased. “The fetus should be resilient. It obviously took,” Reed nodded to Connor’s stomach, “and quite well. It should not have been injured by his fall.”
“Let’s just make sure,” said James as he pulled up Connor’s shirt and began to perform a sonogram. He noticed the way Connor’s breasts had become swollen like a woman’s, now round and flushed, nipples sticking out in his shirt. James couldn’t help feeling guilty for what he was taking part in. Experimenting on one of the interns may have pushed things a little too far.
Doctor Reed busied herself with hooking an IV line into Connor’s arm, taking the rare opportunity to pump him full of fluids and liquid fat to help his body better support the elephant fetus in his womb. “How are things looking?” Reed asked.
“Very good,” James admitted. “Healthy.”
Connor awoke a few hours later slumped against his desk. He groaned as he sat up. “What happened?”
He looked around the room. Reed was talking to one of the other interns a few cubicles down.
Reed noticed him, and walked over, a mug of coffee in hand. “Hey, how are you?” she said neutrally.
Connor furrowed his eyebrows. “What am I doing here?”
Reed frowned. “You don’t remember?” She lowered her voice. “After we left your place, we came here to get started on that amphibian report. You must have dozed off.”
“Right,” said Connor, rubbing his head. Reed offered him her large mug of coffee, and Connor accepted it. As Reed walked off, he tasted it. What he had expected to be coffee was hot chocolate. A very thick, creamy, and buttery-tasting hot chocolate. He wrinkled his nose and tried to put it down, but couldn’t resist drinking more. Once he had finished the mug, he lowered it with a sigh. He reached down and patted his stomach, but paused and looked down, before ripping open his lab coat.
His belly was rounded and swollen outward, unnaturally. Connor’s fingers sank into the layer of fat covering his bloated midsection. It looked as though he was five months pregnant! So the growth spurt hadn’t been a dream.
Connor swallowed.
