Connor was thin for an eighteen-year-old. In fact, people often thought him malnourished. He resented his skinny frame. And he found that he was rarely taken seriously by others because of his young appearance.
Not having many friends, Connor had a passion for animals. He spent his evenings volunteering at an animal shelter by his house. Because his town was on the edge of the woods, people regularly called in with reports of animals that had wandered off into the foliage and gotten wounded or lost. Unable to stand the thought of an animal in pain or need, Connor often found himself venturing out into the woods. Each trip seemed to take him deeper into the thickening trees.
Trevor! he called, after two hours of searching. A glance up at the speckles of sky he could make out through the leaves told Connor that the sun was beginning to set. He had to head back, but he didnt want to give up just yet. Trevor! Connor called again through his cupped hands.
A large ball of black fur darted by a few yards away from him. Trev! Connor took chase, but he couldnt keep up. Soon the dog had disappeared, and Connor had lost track of what direction he was facing. He walked through bushes and leaves, ducking under branches, trying to find his way, but it was getting dark, and nothing looked familiar anymore. He felt exhausted, dehydrated, and most of all, hungry. If he didnt get home soon his parents were going to think he was blowing off curfew.
Young man? someone called from behind him. Young man, are you okay?
Connor turned around. He could make out the figure of a woman. Yeah, he said awkwardly. Just a bit lost. Do you think you can point me to the direction of town?
Connor could make out the woman better as she approached. She looked to be in her sixties or so. She was stocky-looking, and carried a cane, though she did not seem to be relying on it much to walk.
Whats your name, young man? the woman said.
Connor.
The woman nodded. Im Edna. Why dont you come to my cabin you can use the phone. Its far too late for you to make it out of the woods on your own.
Oh no, Im fine, Connor protested.
But the old woman was already walking off. Come along, she said. Suppers about done.
Connor hesitated, not knowing what course to take. Trying to get back to town without directions could prove troublesome. And he was never opposed to a free meal. Connor placed his hand against his stomach just as it growled. Sighing, he followed Edna before the woman could disappear into the trees.
Ednas cabin was quaint and homey from the outside. As Connor entered, he was overcome by the warmth of the fireplace, and the aroma of delicious foods. Feeling instantly comfortable, Connors muscles relaxed as he followed Edna into the dining room. Edna pulled out a seat for him.
Uh Edna, said Connor, pointedly. The phone?
Whats the hassle? said Edna, as she bustled into the next room. Young people these days, always in such a rush.
Connor bit his lip, not wanting to come off as impolite. He sat in silence as Edna brought out one massive dish at a time a entire roasted pork, a mountain of macaroni and cheese, another of mashed potatoes, a huge boat of thick gravy, a basket of rolls, and a varieties of pies among other things. It was far too much for one, let alone two people. It looked as though Edna had prepared a Thanksgiving feast.
Edna made Connor a plate piled with food before sliding it in front of him.
Go ahead, dear.
Connor didnt need to be told twice. He dug in.
That evening , Connor stuffed himself with more food than he was ever allowed to eat at home. It was all so delicious. Edna provided him with serving after serving, and Connor ate until he felt sick.
Soon it was late, and Edna was leading him away. Connor drowsily allowed himself to be ushered along to a guest room.
Why dont you spend the night? Ill take you to town tomorrow morning.
Connor could do little more but nod in agreement. He just felt so lethargic all the sudden.
Good night, said Edna, and Connor felt himself being deposited against a mattress. Sweet dreams.
Thanks mam, Connor mumbled back, before dropping against the pillows and falling asleep.

When Connor awoke, he was no longer against the nice, soft mattress. Instead, his body was sprawled against a hard wood floor. Groaning, he sat up, to notice that he was in Ednas living room on the ground beside a dusty old radiator. What the he trailed off as he noticed discomfort in his ankle. He glanced down at it to see that there was a piece of rope encircling it, attaching him to the radiator that was affixed to the floor, and might as well have been part of it.
Connor immediately began to tug at the rope. the fuck, he said as jerked at it more desperately.
Oh, youre awake.
Connor looked up as Edna entered from the next room. She was wearing an apron.
What do you want? said Connor. My family doesn't have much money-
Edna cackled. I'm not interested in money.
Then what? said Connor.
Oh, you'll see in due time.
