Here is finally the first chapter of our new adventure: Darkest Maps - Fables*!
Darkest Maps - Fables will lead you, map after map, to relive the stories of our childhood with different eyes. The four maps will be divided into chapters and we recommend collecting them all to play the story at its best.
The tale will unfold in four chapters forming a single point of adventure, a “What If” in a Grimmdark key you can experience firsthand.
We will post two chapters a month. Pay attention to our programming post here on Patreon so you do not miss any!
The first of our dark tales is The Cursed Chant, ispired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story, “The little Meirmaid”. In this fairy tale you’ll discover how the sad story of the meirmaid in love ends. Furthermore you can also end the death spiral that hundreds of years ago has chained the inhabitants of the nearby castle.
We hope to inspire you wonderful adventures with our maps into this fairytale.

THE CURSED CHANT
Chapter 1: Meirmaid Coast
The Cursed Chant will lead you to a city or to a small village on the coast. Just outside one of the fishing areas is very dangerous and unusable. Someone or something tears the fishermen to pieces. You heroes will be called to investigate the bloody problem.
- In truth around the cave and the castle disappearances have always happened, but lately they are more frequent.
- In the city they say to pay attention to the Sea Cave. The rumors are it is inhabited by monstrous and ferocious guardians who let no one cross it.
- Beyond the Cave lies the ancient Castle on the Sea. It was the heart of the old Kingdom, before the King was killed. No one has been there for at least one hundred years for fear of monsters.
- Digging deep talking to people someone could tell you how, according to legend, the King was killed by a meirmaid.
- Somebody else will tell you about the Ghost of the Meirmaid. The ghost would haunt the castle so servants and nobles left it after the old King’s death.
- Is it really just a popolar legend? Yet the disappearances continue to occur and happen here and now. After all how can a story of two hundred years ago and the missing young sailors be connected?
N.B. We strongly recommend to the DM to read the original story before embarking on the adventure, so you’ll be able to fully enter the story.
Like all old and famous fairytales it is easily found online. The Little Meirmaid will offer you bloody and unexpected ideas, perfect to insert in your game.
ADVICE FOR THE MASTER
The players should go on their quest to investigate the Meirmaid Coastdisappearances. The nearby cliff is the first joint of the story.
- Exploration before the quest should make the players understand the dangers of the area and let them know about the many legends of Meirmaid whispered in the cities around the great old castle on the cliff, uninhabited for two hundred years now.
- Players can obtain this informations talking to the people, at an Inn, in a Tavern or everywhere you want to direct them.
- Meirmaid Coast was a rich corner of fishing frequented by the nobles of the castle, before it fell into ruin.
- Today the place is use by fishermen, but they stay well away from the Cave e do not go there at night.
- It often happens the current bring to shore pieces of wrecked ships. The waters around there have always been dangerous but lately the accidents have multiplied. It seems like something or somebody purposely attacks boats.
- The legends say if you go by night to Meirmaid Falls you can hear the meirmaid sing, but none dares to approach. Young men test their courage but few of them have returned to tell of singing.
- It is mostly girls who survived the night singing and pass on the legend.
- Talking to a very old woman she will tell you she believes in Meirmaid. She has once nearly drowned but the meirmaids saved her. She will tell you how by night she goes there and listening the meirmaids singing she knows they sing for her dead sister.
NOTES
Meirmaid Coast is a wide coastal area where you can enter via the north stairway. Some brave fisherman ventures there, but they area is wild and abandoned.
You can easily meet animals or monsters and in the city they offer rewards to those who clean up a bit the area.
The road on the coast leads to a misterious Sea Cave…
- Meirmaid Coast is also a wide battlefield. It can offer greedy opportunities for dynamic fights on many levels and surprise attacks.
- The pier and the cliff may be infested with little monsters and carrion eaters who fight for fishermen’remains.
- Wolfs or bandits or other monsters could be an unexpected problem but are they responsabile of the disappearances?
- On the Meirmaid’s pier you can find visible traces of fights. Something brings the fishermen into the water. The traces lead the players to the Cave.
