Oda did a “what if” cover from I believe chapter 596. It’s a cover about what if Sabo was alive and reunited with Luffy and ace. In that cover you can see ace have the “ACE” tato without the S crossed out. Meaning that in the main story it was a tribute to Sabo 🙂‍↕️

there's the cover of chapter 596, presenting an alternate future where Sabo doesn't die and the ASL trio grows up together. Ace still has his name tattooed on his arm, but the S is missing because Sabo is still alive so there's no need to honor him.

I think explanation of Ace's tattoo is more simple: ACE put ASCE in his name, just because he wanted to show that he still remembers Sabo and his death. By that meaning it was Sabo who made him ACE. Without crossed S, A wouldn't become ACE, wouldn't become this cool pirate ACE. Ace didn't know what to do when he first met Sabo. Throughout his childhood, he was picking the fights to prove himself that he had the right to be born in this world. Sabo gave him new dream and new goal in his life. So this is why S made him ACE.

first time i saw this episode i was destroyed. then i kept thinking about ti and got reminded about this moment in alabasta when he say to VIVI "people die". i always thought that for luffy to say something like that so calmly he had to experience the loss of sopmeone dear too him and always wondered who it was... it was SABO

There's a small detail included in this episode that I really appreciate, when Ace walks up to bop Luffy on the head he first exhales on his fist. It's exactly what Garp did on Water 7 before busting through some walls to see Luffy. Idk if it's the same in the manga but it's a neat easter egg for fans who notice that kind of stuff. Garp called it a "Fist of Love" and I guess Ace had his own little version of it.

Here are my two theories on Ace's tattoo: 1. Ace messed up the spelling of his name when he told the tattoo artist and had to cross out the S. This conveys to us that Ace is a hot headed and reckless guy that charges into situations. ( This is the most plausible theory ) 2. The letters in the tattoo could represent important people to Ace. A is for Ace, S is for Sabo, C is for Crybaby ( Luffy ), and E is for Edward ( Whitebeard ). The crossed out S is to recognize Sabo's death. ( This is less likely, but the crossed out S is interesting )
