I had these thoughts while watching, so they're all disconnected lol. Sorry about that. Yeah, Celestial Dragons don't care about killing innocent kids. Just imagine if someone could do the worst possible shit, the CD's will and have done it. I always wondered why Ace was able to hit Luffy and hurt him. Haki? And now we know that Luffy has lost both brothers. It gives more context to the pain and suffering of losing Ace, as well as to why he was so adamant about saving him. He couldn't lose another brother, and yet he did, right before his own eyes. What do you think Luffy will do now after this backstory arc? I also like that this arc gives even more reason for Luffy to be so protective of his crew, and why he broke down when Kuma sent them away during Saboady. I love this arc because it defines Luffy and helps us see why he is the way he is, besides his relationship with Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates.

This flashback really contextualizes Luffy’s drive to protect everyone and grow stronger in a really obvious way. What’s no so obvious, and I think arguable, is how much he really understands about the world that killed Sabo. When you start looking at Luffy through the lens of someone who does actually understand the world it makes him much scarier in my opinion. He occasionally says or does something that makes me think he’s paying a lot more attention than you’d usually give him credit for.

I think Oda had plans for Sabo since Alabasta which is also supported by the interaction between Luffy and Vivi before going to Rainbase.

I think there is a reference in Dragon's words to the Bible, The Revelation, the last words. Happy are those who wash their robes,+ so that they may have authority to go to the trees of life+ and that they may gain entrance into the city through its gates.+ 15  Outside are the dogs* and those who practice spiritism and those who are sexually immoral* and the murderers and the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices lying.’+ So all this story about WG and Luffy's childhood was something that Oda planned from the beginning.

its actually quite common with people who are "revolutionaries", most "rebels" have a tendency to care about the world itself than their own inner circle...while most "traditional" people tend to care about their inner circle and less about the world...its the study of ideological difference of morality.

his tattoo is literally just his name with the S added for Sabo. there is literal proof for this in the manga in chapter 596 the cover page is a what if Sabo was alive and his tattoo in the coverpage reads "ACE"

Historically lots of people who became pirates were due to them being outcasts from society. Whether it’s because of their sexuality, class, or just because they’re criminals. Another important theme I enjoy in one piece is found family. Dadan, Ace, Belle-mere, Zeff, Hiriluk, Kureha, the straw hats, etc.

"Crybaby" seems like a word that's a little too foreign for Japanese audiences and Ace had his arm tattoo before ever meeting Whitebeard.

I've always liked Bluejam's line about how the strong and the cowardly survive but the brave die. It's a sad and ever-present theme of the show. When two people clash, the strongest survives and the other only survives if they're willing to run away. Ace could have survived Marineford if he just ran. Ace is "strong" but he was nowhere near strong enough to take on an admiral. Luffy would have died seven different times if he didn't have the willpower and strength to pick himself up and keep going. He's strong and brave but thanks to Shanks' guidance (something Ace didn't have) he's also just (barely) smart enough to run when he's hopelessly outmatched.

There's something hilarious about Dragon going through all this effort to save and recruit a bunch of poor folks, but can't spare a minute to check up on his own son

I've seen so many One Piece memes to not laugh my ahh off over the "Sabo putting book down" scene. I love when reveals in One Piece can be so nonchalant, like here for example, Oda simply shows Kuma standing in the background for one panel, he doesn't even give him any lines or reactions, he's just bulking behind Dragon while all the attention is of course on Ivankov.

When this chapter came out the editors/magazines line at the end of the chapter was something like "Will Ace survive this encounter with Bluejam?!" Found that pretty interesting seeing as this is a flashback happening right after the arc featuring adult Ace.
