The way I see it, Blackbeard becoming a Warlord was important to getting into Impel Down mainly because of having access to a Navy ship, so he could get through the Gates of Justice and sail through the Calm Belt.

I love how Akainu didn't feel any regret except that he didn't kill Whitebeard. This is how a real antagonist should act. He didn't feel pity or sorrow. He hates outlaws.

WB only losing part of his moustache is not canon. The anime did not depict the actual damage done to WB in OP world: Losing half his head from Akainus punch.

This is one of the better episodes of this arc from a production standpoint. The animation during Akainu and Whitebeard’s battle had an increase of frames of animation. You really felt like each of those blows had an impact in the battle and they were not just still shots like in some of the earlier episodes. Also supplementing some of the dramatic scenes was quite the arrangement of music that conveys a sence of terror/horror when luffy was screaming and going into paralytic shock. Also moments of triumph as whitebeard slashes waves of haki blasts at the marine headquarters. Then of course at the end was the shocking cliffhanger, Blackbeard with the escapes of impel down’s prisoners who were only shown as silhouettes before but now you can see them in all their glory and yes, they do look downright ugly, but it’s fitting for a crew of the Blackbeard pirates. Also, I cannot forget to mention the blood curdling scream by Mayumi Tanaka, voice of luffy. I’ve seen some one piece in English, but this is why I am a sub only fan. My god, how does she even create such tone and pitch in her voice to go that high? Shout out to her for such an impressive performance there. I almost felt like my soul was leaving my body. Anyways fantastic episode I can not wait for the next one.

Meigo (冥狗めいご), literally meaning "Dark Hound" or "hell hound" in the viz/funimation dub. Is one of akainu's most lethal techniques and in the manga, it melted half of whitebeards face, which was a bit censored in the anime series. Sakazuki punches into and pierces his opponent's body with a molten rock fist, then detonates it, filling the victim's body with magma and inflicting massive internal damage.

For those who wonder why Akainu was this strong: Akainu's design was based on a Japanese actor called Bunta Sugawara, which is Oda's idol when he was a child, even Akainu's real name "Sakazuki" was from Bunta's old movies. So you now probably know why Akainu was this powerful and have more fight scenes than other admirals, because Oda likes him. And more episodes you watch, you can actually feels that he did bit bias to him. And if you check out the comic you will see that he's even more powerful than in the anime, he rip Whitebeard's half of his head off with his power. They didn't show that probably because it's too bloody and not good for the kids

Akainu was always looking cocky and confident, and his strength is unquestioned. So I really enjoyed watching him shitting his pants here when he drew Whitebeard's attention. Goes to show what an absolute badass Whitebeard is even in this weakened state.

What a crazy, crazy episode man. Whitebeard standing up after that lethal Akainu attack and wiping the floor with him. Blackbeard sneakingly appearing out of nowhere, the allies and other members are fleeing. It's basically a one vs all till death. I guess it's waranted to re-iterate on the fact that Whitebeard got half his face blown away, not just his mustache.

Not so fun fact The cups Luffy and Ace drank sake in are called 'Sakazuki' cups The name of the Admiral who severed that bond And yeah like other comments mentioned that attack at 7:52 literally blew away the left half of Whitebeard's head, not just his mustache.

Just so you know, Whitebeard having a bit of his moustache burned by Akainu is actually not canon. In reality, in the manga, almost half of his face is not injured, but completely burned and not present. He continues from then on with almost a half of his head and face missing and burned. They couldn't show the brutality of this in the anime, but Whitebeard is an actual beast (don't even get me started about all the other injuries and sickness he was suffering beforehand).
