Marineford is such a great war arc because it truly feels like the culmination of everything cooking under the surface up til now. All the active warlords, the admirals, Ace, even Koby's little arc, the return of a lot of popular antagonists with Impel Down, Ivan and all the revolutionary stuff, even Whitebeard and his allies who's been slowly built up during those random batches of lore heavy episodes between major arcs. There's just a sense that this is an important if not the most important event since Roger's execution in this world and no matter the outcome there will be some sort of major change to the status quo.
