I think in the novel they might mention that the "emperor's brother" was veiled during the garden party, either hiding his sickness, or the results of his sickness.

Jinshi's disguise is something that's somewhat confusing. I know for the garden party, his disguise actually was very elaborate, including make up to make him look sick (because his cover for being the brother is that the brother is sickly and house bound). He then took it all off to go back and get Maomao, and she comments that he looks weird now, and she eventually puts it together that he looks way younger now for some reason. One thing he maybe does is dye his hair? Too me his ceremonial hair is a different shade than his normal hair. I would agree that in the book it is easier to imagine how the ruse would work, because we can't literally see them and compare them.
