considering shanks fights with a sword, i would assume Mihawk has beaten him as part of his title as worlds strongest swordsman. But possibly not they don't make it very clear.

I personally agree that from all shonen authors, Oda succeed in showing real war situation. Kishimoto filled his war with just Zetsu fodders so you don't really care about them. And I can mention other authors, but I don't want to spoil anything. This is why I love One Piece, you can cheer for "evil" side, and actually real care about antagonists of this series.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but at the time that the tremor tremor fruit abilities were properly revealed in the anime, it so happens that Japan was in the middle of a massive Earthquake alert. It was a very bizarre feeling back then. Really added to Whitebeard's threat meter.

The "I just wanna be part of your symph-no-mi" has to be one of the best off the cuff devil fruit puns I've ever heard XD You made such a great point near the end about how when fodder characters are done poorly they feel like they were created right before they show up on screen and have no real relevance or purpose other than to be bodies. Here, most of these "fodder-esque" characters serve a similar purpose but, like you said, it feels like they are actually a part of the world, it just happens to be the case that they havent been on our screen or have only gotten a brief showing until now.

Aokiji's freezing range is insane but it might not be island to island. Remember that the anime switched some events of Long Ring Long Land a little bit and Tonjit was replaced with some random castaways on a different island. In the manga since it was Tonjit, and because of the way Long Ring Long Land works, it's all one island with ten high grounds forming a 'ring'. So his range is quite insane, and he did say it would last atleast a week but maybe not island to island. Confusion completely on the anime part for that.

Exactly Carson ! Marineford is like the culmination of every thing that's been happening and set up over the last 400 episodes ! To some of the most random fodders like Jango or Fullbody to the biggest players like Mihawk, The Whitebeard Pirates or the Admirals etc

I think its very cool in the flashbacks of Ace with the Whitebeard Pirates (last ep) you see the enemies they fight end up being some of the allies on the battlefield right now. It gives more weight to your point of "wow all of these people have history with one another they aren't just pawns Whitebeard is sending in"

The conversation between Shanks and Mihawk in the end of East Blue went something like this Shanks: I'm in a bad mood right now... Have you come for a match? Mihawk: Hmph... I'm not interested in our fight, now that you have but one arm. I know some people will feel the need to correct it but yeah. The implication about whether one lost to the other is not made as far as we've seen. All we know so far is Shanks and Mihawk were renowned for their duels between each other according to Whitebeard. And now that Shanks lost his arm, it didn't continue.
