this will become clearer as you watch more (EP 2 already mostly cleared it up but i'll explain anyway), it's something a japanese or chinese watcher would know going in so it's not really a spoiler: Families could sell their children into service (at the rear palace or other places). In return they would get a cut of the child's salary. It's unclear at this point if palace management knows about the kidnappers and allows it, if the kidnappers "sold" Maomao to a different family who is listed as her family (and receiving a cut of her money) or if the kidnappers themselves pretended she was their sister/daughter to profit off of her work

yeah the first LN starts with the scene of her walking around the rear palace, everything before that was added (idk about the web novel cause i haven't read that)

Fun fact that's not super mentioned in the anime: Concubine Gyokyou is 19 (almost 20, according to the LN) and Maomao is 16 as of the beginning of the story. So it's kinda hilarious to me when Maomao says "I need a drink" (talking about sake) like she's a middle aged business man xD

In the novels she just thinks about the time they kidnapped her, that's why it felt a little too fast in the anime lmao

Just in case you were wondering I believe the food shown was Baozi which are chinese steamed pork buns. Just googling chinese steamed pork buns will give you a million different recipes on it.
