I really like the way Oda depicts Luffy's mental state here. He doesn't make it completely obvious, we see some scenes that gives the impression that he is thinking about the strawhats and is probably sad, but they are done in a jokingly manner. Despite that, the first half of the episode is just dedicated to him kind of aimlessly thinking about them and trying to seem happy, because that is probably his coping mechanism. In the end, he literally eats some mushrooms that makes him laugh, because he is doing his best to not be sad. He is most probably literally depressed and tried doing literal drugs to keep sane.
