What makes this arc so good is how well they depict the slavery aspect. This episode makes me physically ill, and it’s what reignited my love for One Piece after getting stuck on Thriller Bark, cause of its awful pacing, for over a decade. Especially when you compare it to how other anime, specifically isekai, depict slavery as either just a way to introduce the next Harem member, or just as a background detail, but here they actually explore how awful the whole thing is. Knowing that not only did this use to happen, but that in some parts of the world it’s still happening.

Wouldn't that make Luffy and Ace cousins? Unless you mean Luffy was also Garp's daughters son. Anyway, I remember thinking a lot of things at that time, I actually had guessed the correct answer but I don't think I can say anything more and avoid spoilers :P

This is not a spoiler, just what i used to think at the time while this was airing weekly.. I always assumed Garp ALSO had a daughter and Ace was her son lol Won't say if it's true or not, but i find it interesting how you never thought about that (at least i don't remember you talking about it)

I love in the midst of all of this darkness, we get the news about a public execution. Like you'd think it doesn't get more engaging that the entire slave trade and then there is Ace's public execution. Reacts justified.

I think the Hachi change is easier to write around. They could either make flashbacks showing him leaving Arlong’s crew before Nami comes back, or they could replace him with one of the other members of the crew who did appear, but that's still a huge change. And Yeah Anime Garp > Live Action Garp, even if I do like Live Action Garp

Back in Post Enies Lobby it was revealed that the connection between Garp and Roger was that he cornered the pirate king multiple times during his era. So the anime did mention that relation.

100% And we really liked live action Garp. He’s a decent character, maybe he even explores the emotions Garp feels better than the anime (like taking those feelings more seriously). But yeah the more I see the more I question if that change is even worth it, even if it has its benefits Same with cutting Hachi (for more obvious reasons)

It's been a while since I reread this section but IIRC in the manga the pirate captain that was being auctioned off this episode self-deleted when he was brought on stage by biting through his own tongue and bleeding out. Heavy shit.
