In first chapter of One Piece Oda planned to show fishmanm but then editor make him to change this to thing that chapter 1 is now, So we could assume that whole rasist thing was also planned as well as WG Gorosei leaders and other stuff. Speaking Luffy, I was surprised that he didn't try to free all slaves in markets where he was searching for Camie. Which again just shows how Luffy accepted reality that he can't save everyone.

Arlong Park was written by Oda in his late teenage to early 20s. The difference can be felt with a decade of experience in his belt was huge and most of OP fans have grown up back then. In addition Oda was so big in Japan that editors has less influence in his writing now but still give him ideas on how to improve like when his editor said to add spice to Sabaody arc, Oda introduced the 11 Supernovas.

Wasn't so much that TB is skippable. Anything canon shouldn't be skipped because you never know what Oda'll bring back later anyway ;) It was more that Thriller Bark fun with its slow moments and its highs, but as you have started to notice, it is a small saga/arc sandwiched between peak OP content, so as a result it just doesn't stand out as the best arc for a lot of people, especially once you already know the gags that make up a whole part of it. It's still very fun and enjoyable, and must see. There's just crazy stuff before and after it.

I've also always been a pretty big fan of the arc, for me the thought of Absalom's part in it really dragged the arc down a bit in my memory. On this rewatch it wasn't as bad as I built it up to be in my head though. Thriller bark and Skypiea are among my favorite arcs in terms of nostalgia mainly because the humor really hits for me.

Thriller Bark is literally my favorite arc. But that's pretty uncommon for one piece fans in general. A lot of people don't like thriller bark or think it's one of the worst arcs in one piece. The whole "Nothing Happened" is a big meme every time there's a reactor coming into Thriller Bark, but there are many, many people who just think Thriller Bark is worse than most arcs unironically.

This was chapter 500 in the manga and in the lead up people were speculating that it was gonna be something epic or drop some lore on us. And did Oda deliver. Freaking Silvers Rayleigh. The funny thing is if you go all the way back to like episode 5 or 6 with Buggy's flashback it actually shows Rayleigh ordering everyone around. It's cool that Oda took that design from way back then and aged him up to keep continuity.

Writing wise things that would seem like way bigger ass pulls without those arcs, like mantra hangs as an open question for so long, plus with the whole looking into the past thing an entire sublore of Roger's time is reviewed. He both makes stepping stones and actively works backwards from stuff. There's a freaking wild cover arc story off skypia as well that anime watchers don't know a thing about. As for long ring long land, I love the idea of a Davy Back Fight between the red hair pirates before facing off against whatever is at the end of the world. The real 3 coin battle would be the fastest the crew can go on the water, the strongest of the crews playing a non lethal game of strength and finally Shanks vs Luffy. Otherwise its actual purpose is to be canon filler.

I feel like it’s great writing that we don’t know about the fishman discrimination until Sabaody. We hate Arlong first as an irredeemable villain but it’s only once you get to this arc that the complexities of his motivations, and the plight of the fishman people, are fleshed out. It really adds to the shock factor alongside slavery and trafficking being introduced. Thanks for the mega drop! Great discussions!!

I have heard people say long ring long land, Thriller bark, and Skypiea are all skippable. I whole heartedly disagree with them because Oda calls back things you'd never think would be important. Even if he doesn't every arc has nuggets of importance and being enjoyable

This is definitely the part of the story to me where you really start thinking of OP as a "world" as opposed to just a linear story. Now that you have all this info on the Void Century, the Celestial Dragons, the Elders, the Fishman, have seen various individual kingdoms, + the Navy & Admirals like Aokiji, the Buster Call, Enies Lobby, the Warlords, etc. etc. etc. you can really get a full picture of how fucked up and dystopian the world actually is despite the typical tone of the show. Like it's not a coincidence or just a meta narrative device that basically every island the SH's end up in is fucked in one way or another, that's the way it is in this world for your average person in general.

Arlong not bringing up Fishman discrimination much in Arlong Park is actually kind of important for Nami’s character. Her whole life, her only experience with Fishman was them subjugating and being racist towards humans, so up to this point she’s had a one sided view of the Fishman and Humans. In this episode she can’t even believe that the Fishman could be subjugated, since all she heard growing up was how much better Fishman were.

I love how when Arlong was introduced, we see him as the villain (and he is), and is not put through any remotely redeemable light, but we later see that this is what he may have went through (not celestials dragons, but general racism against his whole race) before starting to replicate the same hate that his people suffered for so much time.

Thrillerbark isn't skippable but you could watch it at 1.5x speed from after Luffy pushes the zombie back into the ground up until Kuma arrives lol. The arc is in a rough spot because it is surrounded by Water 7 and this saga which is imo fictional gold from start to finish

Absolutly insane drop tonight guys. I stayed up to 3:30 AM for this, and it was worth it. Ending with the big reveal of the legend himself, Silver's Rayleigh, the Pirate King's Righthand of Gol. D. Roger. I am sure you are absolutly enthralled by how much is happening in the story now. Carson is just kind of speechless lol. Well it only gets even more thrilling.

Lots of heavy elements being introduced and recontextuliazed The Live Action did a really good job with Arlong vehiculating how fishmen are considered in the grand scheme of things. Back then our scope of the world was very small, even Nami's surprised such powerful beings are actually the ones discriminated. Arlong boasted a lot about race superiority and such. Who would have thought it's actually the opposite in the eyes of the common people.(Actually makes sense that would be the case as he's trying to challenge the status quo, but the power of numbers is seemingly very strong.) Also now we know why Kokoro was passing as a normal human and not a mermaid.
