WATER 7 SAGA (207-325) Podcast Questions!
🕑 Added 2024-09-08 15:09:30 +0000 UTCPost your questions here!
Try not to post LEADING questions. Like don’t ask questions about what we think about things we haven’t seen yet. Ask us questions in the context of THIS SAGA. I can tell everyone is excited about future events, and in the past there has been a problem with those feelings leading the direction of questions, and people were disappointed when we didn’t talk about things we hadn’t seen yet.
Just remember that this is a discussion about the things we’ve seen. That can include predictions and theories, but you can easily spoil us if you’re not careful by leading the conversation too much in one direction.

what do you understand about Devil Fruit until this point..did you find Chopper more better than Luci?
Masdabazz04
What are your thoughts on the pacing so far? One piece is my favourite anime, but I don't consider it the best because of toeis pacing since they want to stick to weekly, especially later on. It gets bad 😭
Mochi Chuu
Now seeing all of the Water 7 Saga, how would u ranks the arcs as ur favorite in the series so far? Enies Lobby is in my Top 5.
Mo
Favorite character and why is it Robin?
Rachid Idibar
that Moment with igaram discovering that Nico Robin (Miss all sunday) is officialy a straw hat is why I think One piece is so loved. The attention to little details is unmatched. Oda keeps tracks of little things and then rewards you for reading/watching
Rachid Idibar
What do you think about Rob Lucci as a character ? A lot of people write him off as one dimensional but I believe his concept of "Dark Justice" stands out among one piece villains
Krykee
Me praying they drop this before my 4.5 hour road trip tmw 🤞🏼
Artemis
Which character in the one piece world from the early east blue till current events, be it antagonist or ally to the straw hats do you want to see again? Please specify reasons for wanting to see him/her again and what you want/predict their role in the plot to be.
Will.Har310
I know the concept is so fresh for y’all, but what’s y’all’s predictions for Haki, if you have any?
ChocoBoshi
@Artemis Thanks, I appreciate it. I wasn't really worried about spoilers exactly, this just isn't the place to discuss arc rankings
Artemis
@Artemis, i didn't allude to anything or talk about the story, but anyways ill delete the comment.
BTImelesS
I would put Enies Lobby between 5 and 6
Rachid Idibar
Water7/enies lobby is considered as a solid top 5 arcs in OP why do you think that is ? What are your thoughts on aokiji ? He seems to be antagonistic but not straight up a villain kinda like smoker. What do you think about zoro speech of noone should be disrespecting the captain
Дмитро Подорван
What theories? They just fuck shit up is what we have seen so far
Macgayver Peixoto
I want you to focus on the writing of this arc. Because I think it's the most solid of all to date. Notice that the entire arc was about friendship. The crew at one point was down to just five people. Also, Robin's rescue has roots since she decided to join the crew, at the end of the Arabasta arc. And finally, in the last episode we have a fight between the captain and a former crew member who committed the most unforgivable crime in the world of One Piece.
Artemis
There has been alot of what I like to call "Poetic symbolism", through many of oda's deep and insightful "quotes" that help add depth and broaden the meaning behind idea's and characters used in the story. What is your favorite of these "quotes". It can also be something you felt inspired by. Some examples: "You are just a small frog in a well. Know this world" - Hawk Eye Mihawk "WHAT KIND OF GOD DESTROYS EVERYTHING BUT SAVES NOTHING?!" - Monkey D. Luffy “Everyone has things they can do and things they can’t do. Right now, I need you to do what I can’t… As long as we have you there’s still a chance we can win!” - Sanji When ya having a hard time, Just laugh. Dereshishishishishi! - Jaguar D. Saul
Artemis
Love this question, the expansion of the world building is certainly something that has changed since its early OP days.
BTImelesS
Which scene did you find the most iconic of this arc? Also, if you revisit Robin's character from when you first met her, how does your perspective of her changes now that you know her backstory and character?
Gino
Do you think someday we are going to the island of snipers?
Nicolas LeBlanc
Den Den mushi lore (not even a question) : During active use, a Den Den Mushi will relay not only the speaker's words and emotions (laughter, screams, etc.), but also distinctive facial traits and even injuries.Depending on its mood, it can choose to disguise itself or mimic the traits of anyone close to it, either the one speaking or its owner.
Jambron
What did you think about the level-up of One Piece (do you feel there was a substantial increase in quality), both in terms of story/narrative, world expansion, and stakes (which is more of a manga/Oda thing), and taking into account but bypassing the fact that it also coincided with an anime-level upgrade (animation of certain scenes/HD/music)?
Artemis
lol true that. Though I think that will become even more apparent as they continue.
Krykee
Which character surprised you in this arc the most? (Character development, strength, morality, etc.)
Anq
What do you think of Oda's writing skills after this arc compared to other authors in general (not just in anime/manga)?
Red Division
Simple Question for the shounen fans, what was your top 3 most enjoyable fights from the saga?
Dan Bax
There where a lot of world opening events happening in this saga. How did your general view of the world (the oceans, the marines, pirates, warlords etc.) and its mysteries (devil fruits, different powers like haki, the six powers; ancient weapons) from the start of the saga on Longring Longland till the end of the saga change?
Guy Buddy
After finishing this saga, does it change thoughts on what you have been worrying about this series as a whole, if any? Or maybe make you even more worried?
Artemis
Now after seeing 325 episodes, which I like to call the Early phase of this grand epic. What are your top 5 favorite moments in the entire show so far?
Artemis
I know before during the Skypiea saga, you had concerns about how Robin as a character would grow and rather or not, her background would be integral to the overall story of one piece. Now that you have had a chance to see her arc’s growth from the time, she was introduced in Whiskey Peak to the most recent, water 7 saga. How do you feel about the writing as a whole, in the series for her character and what does she add to the story.
Reunion
Agreed. It's such a unique setup that marinates differently for everyone. I'm curious to hear them look back on it. Plus, if they have any thoughts on Long Ring as an overall arc, they're probably gonna talk about it in their discussion before they get into Q&A.
Guy Buddy
What did you expect to see in this saga before start, and compare it to what have happened now, which part, if any, do you think could've been done better and which couldn't get any better?
Guy Buddy
What clash/contrast of perspectives/ideals do you see in this saga if any, how are they similar or different? For examples from past arcs: 1. Don Krieg vs. Luffy / A person's strength is defined by their military might vs. A person's strength is defined by their resolution) 2. Crocodile vs. Cobra / A nation is defined by military power vs. A nation is defined by people) 3. Kureha vs. Hiriluk / A cure is defined by a doctor's skill and longevity vs. A cure is defined by a doctor's heart and inherited good heart 4. Enel(Kalgara) vs. Luffy(Noland) / Fear = God vs. Miracle is God(resolution brings miracle / knowledge brings miracle)
fia
you can do that if you want, i was just joking because op forgot to include LRLL at first, which i thought was funny
Nicholas Smith
Which moment hit you guys harder: “I want to live!” or “Merry’s Funeral”
Tope
Nothing for me to add, but I have to say there are some really great questions here. I hope y’all have a chance to address most of them. Can really make for a strong post-saga discussion 🤓

I'm glad someone else cares enough to ask this. Matthew I disagree, no reason they can't do both, but to me it's far more interesting in it's direct relation to the following arcs it sets up.

Mantra as well
R
Since we got robins backstory, how have you liked her character arc from when we got introduced to her in whiskey peak, to now where we have a lot more context behind her motives and who she is as a character? where morality in this show isnt always black and white, do you think her character arc was handled well and what she means for the story?
R
In terms of power scaling and the fighting aspect of the show, what are your thoughts on how Oda has handled it with the reveals of whitebeard, shanks, cp9 with their six powers and blackbeard given all we've known until this arc was that devil fruits were the only power system in the verse? do you guys like the addition of the concept of the six powers existing in this show?
R
What are your thoughts on the lore drops in post ennies lobby and how they handled luffys family tree being revealed, garps introduction as luffys grandpa vs the live action, and setting up the future with shanks and whitebeards interaction as well as ace and blackbeards interaction?
R
How did you like that luffy and the crew didnt get powerups until 270+ eps into the series?
R
What do you think of luffys growth as a captain and character up til now?
R
Is this the arc where you get the 'hype' around one piece?
R
How have you liked the way Oda tied everything from the start of the arc to the end? (franky family first impressions to now, franky joining vs how we first met him, ussop returning after their feud, Aokiji introduction before water 7 to him letting robin go in the end)
ChocoBoshi
There have been a number of "character development" and "character defining" moments in One Piece, especially in this saga. Which moment or which overall character progression plot line was your favorite or resonated most with you? As an example, I would consider Robin going from wishing for death to wanting to live to be "character development" because she changes. I would consider Zoro guiding Luffy, both after his duel with Usopp and post Enies Lobby when Luffy wanted to let Usopp rejoin regardless of whether he apologized or not, as "character defining" because Zoro doesn't change, parts of his character are just revealed to us. Other moments in this arc include Usopp and his ups and downs, Sanji when he tells us about why he wont fight women. Choppers decision to risk eating 3 rumble balls and Franky going from a hated enemy to an incredibly sympathetic alley. Luffy has always been "ride or die" but taking on the world government without any hesitation is certainly a defining moment for him. Luffy's realization that he cant keep going as he is and the invention of 2nd and 3rd gear in order to exceed his limitations could be viewed as development.
Hafto AGENA
Do you think Luffy had growth in this arc?
Whoopsie
Favorite overall moment from W7/Enies Lobby? And Favorite fight from the arcs?
ChocoBoshi
How could you forget Franky's centaur form. SMH my head
Nathan Chartrand
This saga is my favorite in the entire series, but it had my least favorite antagonists in the form of CP9. How did you guys feel about the group? Unrelated note: I've heard you guys reference other commenters stating that Oda never planned on the series being this long, and while that is true, I think its important to note that he has always said that he had the ending of the series planned from the very start... so don't be worried about this being some JJ Abrams type mystery box that never gets resolved. Have faith in Oda, our glorious leader!
megalazyguy
out of the strawhats power ups, what was your favorite? luffy's gears. zoro's 9 sword style sanji's devil leg chopper's monster point usopp's new slingshot nami's new weapon.
megalazyguy
foxy D. rizzler
megalazyguy
he's usopp's best friend
Extra Crispy
When Robin first joined the crew you talked about how you hoped the story and the characters in it would acknowledge her checkered past and her being a full on villain during alabasta; now we are done with enies lobby how do you feel about her being on the crew? and do you think the story has sufficiently justified it? If you think her past actions are still unjustifiable what do you think that says about the morality of the crew and the show itself?
megalazyguy
how do you feel about all the strawhats bounties? do you think they are fair for what they should be at (beside chopper's) and what would you give them if you gave the bounties

Where do rank water7/Ennies lobby compared to other arcs you have watched so far? Has this arc succeeded/failed to meet your expectations?

Considering Shanks’ background as a former member of Gol D. Roger's crew & his current status as one of the Four Emperors, on the same level as Whitebeard "The Strongest Man in the World" and "The Man Closest to the One Piece", how do you see his role & influence in the story evolving, given his position among the top dawgs in the OP world? What do you think are his motivations? Shanks to Whitebeard: "That arm...? I bet it on the new era! [...] Now is not the time to pit Ace against BB. No one will be able to stop this new era from spiraling into chaos!" Bellamy/Doflamingo & Blackbeard were also speaking about this "new era" back in Jaya
klairvoyage
Since you initially expected the attack on Enies Lobby to potentially be a major failure for the Straw Hats, in the style of a darker shonen deconstruction such as HxH, how do you feel about the clear victory we got instead? Considering the story's length & scope, what are your thoughts on the fact that so early on, the Straw Hats have already traveled to the sky, fought God, taken on the World Government, and are now headed underwater? Where do you think the story can go from here, and moreso do you believe it can continue to raise, or let alone maintain, its stakes effectively? First Jaya & now Post Enies Lobby, what do you think about the tendency of these small in-between arcs, where we revisit old characters and/or get lore drops through side characters. What do you think of this storytelling approach, and how does it impact your connection with the world & its vast cast of characters? PS: Any idea on the significance of the "D", given that it appears in both pirates & Marines now (Monkey D. Garp & Jaguar D. Saul)?
Black Snow
Zoro has shown some interesting things this saga. Taking more of a silent treatment during the Luffy vs Usopp argument. Had a comment about Luffy's role as a captain in comparing to the rest of the crew and took a firm stance at the end, apology first or there's no room for him anymore. How do you feel about that as a whole looking back and do you think with that, he has firmly established himself as a 1st mate? More like a a joke question but at the same time , kids in anime dont have the best track record. Do you have anything to elaborate about the true heroes of the arc, Chimney and Gonbe? Interesting fact about Usopp, he was questioning Sanji and Zoro when they left Luffy to fight Aokiji by himself and Sanji said something like "Luffy demanded a duel and its the captain's orders, don't u understand what a duel means?" I feel at that point Usopp kind felt his inadequacy and took to heart how important a duel is, hence his request later. Going from that and other things Usopp has shown so far, do u think overall his outburst and turn around against Luffy made sense and did u like it how it panned out in the end, especially with the apology at the end or do u think it needed more foreshadowing? In closing, welcome to the "crying over a boat" club, hope u enjoy ur stay :D Excited for next arc.
Matthew Gilroy
Fia while I understand this is a joke, let's pick our brains a bit and consider some of the plot points and themes that are explored in Long Ring Long Land
Reunion
That works too.
Matthew Gilroy
I feel like with Long Ring Long Land we should be asking them their thoughts on the themes and ideas in relation to One Piece as a whole so far
Matthew Gilroy
Throughout the series so far there has been a beautiful theme: What constitutes death? There are many examples where we can examine this from Dr Hiriluk's perspective - a man only dies when they are forgotten. The voices of the past are not forgotten and live on through our characters. Tom lives on through Franky, Kokoro and Iceburg, Merry lives on through the crew, Ohara lives on through Robin and even Aokiji (recall his words to Robin at the end of the arc). Other examples outside this saga include Noland through Cricket and Roger through the world in general. What is your favourite example of where this theme is seen, and are there any other themes that you have discovered that have stuck out to you like this one? Could you relate this theme of death discussed here to: 1) these other themes? (a possible example that I love is Bellamy's denial of the Sky Island's existence. Why is this relevant?) 2) certain lore aspects of the story that have been established?
boredbeck
A second question for Lindsey and Carson each if it's possible: With how the story is going, how would you describe Oda's storywriting style? Can you give your percentages between him being a gardener or an architect? (like 60/40 or 50/50 etc). Thanks again guys! Excited for the new saga!
Sanji Joestar
With now hindsight about the Merry's fate and the fact she is alive, and only Usopp witnessed it back in Skypiea, what do guys think about the argument him and Luffy had before he left? On one side we have Luffy trying to be the captain and manage Usopp's feelings by telling him it's not his fault, we can still buy one. On the other Usopp, coupled with his insecurities, feeling like the Merry is just as much of a character as they are and can't be abandoned just because they were told she can't sail to the next island (which she did).
boredbeck
One of the big criticisms of this saga that I have seen from you guys was Kaku and Kalifa's portrayal in the fights, I agree with this criticism. However, I still think most people liked the gags that were made in it (Usopp and Zoro getting handcuffed together, and Jabra making fun of Kaku specifically) and at this point, we can tell that Oda loves to make things goofy. With this in mind, how would you rewrite this part of the story to still keep Kaku's character intact but slip in the gags that people liked at the same time?...a different devil fruit? a different scenario? a different type of fight? keep the gag time shorter? Thanks! 🙏🙏🙏
Sanji Joestar
What do you guys think of Oda's writing when it comes to set ups and pay offs ? For example in Alabasta we had Mr2 as a friend before a foe and then his sacrifice, with the message that ''Time spent together doesn't matter to true friendship'' which is later applied to the goodbye scene with Vivi. Or the Giant Shadows in the beginning of Jaya. And for this arc, especially about Robin's status as a crewmember since Alabasta, the underlying death of the Merry and how it could affect the stability of the crew from within(as the Davy Back Fight ending with Aokiji shows how the crew would suffer some internal struggles, rather than external, to be destroyed, which almost happened).
Monkey D. Lucci
For Carson specifically, in Episode 241, Zoro brought up to the Straw Hats whether Robin is a friend or foe. You predicted it, but looking back at your reaction of that scene, you did not really elaborated your thoughts of that moment. Was it like you imagined? Did you wanted more added to the scene? For context, Zoro did not trusted Robin on Jaya Island, but during Skypiea, he caught Robin from being zapped by Enel. After LRLL, when confronting Aokiji, Zoro protected Robin. During that scene in Episode 241, Zoro was still on the fence about Robin, only because he didn’t want to hesitate on his decision if Robin’s goal was to harm the crew or not.

Do you think we will ever find out who Sogeking is?

Who was your favorite animal companion from this arc? - Yokozuna (big frog) - Gonbe (Chimney's pet) - Tyrannosaurus (Iceburg's mouse) - Hattori (Lucci's pigeon) - Funkfreed (Spandam's elephant) - Sodom + Gomorrah (the Franky Family's giant Yagara Bulls) How would you rank them compared to the animal companions of previous arcs? (Chouchou, Karoo, Pierre, etc)
Chriz
What are you guys thoughts on Sanji's moral code to NOT attack a women? Although this is his "gag", do you believe it adds to his character in terms of being chivalrous or are you leaning towards; this is a certain character trait that Oda is sticking with? Also thoughts on the animation throughout the ark? Would it hold up to other anime's you've seen?
Marta Britāla
After watching 325 episodes, when you look back at previous arcs/moments/character stories, do you have some that you see in a new light? For instance for me when I first saw Luffy vs Usopp, I had a thought - oh my, they drew Merry like it is crying! Now I see it and thik - oh my, Merry is crying! Not a big difference but still a difference.
Reunion
Although it's padded with filler, what are your opinions on Long Ring Long Land as a setup to Water 7 both in plot and thematically? Also, there's a scene where Sogeking's mask comes off and Usopp's face is revealed. Does this mean there's a Shapeshifter Island? Or perhaps a Shapeshifter Archipelago? Which internal organ do you think it would be located within?
Studdah
What was your favorite moment in the Water 7/Enies Lobby saga? Did it make you like the show even more?

What is your favorite villain up to this point?
David Butt
Do you feel like Long Ring Long Land was a good introduction to this saga? Also who was your favorite villain of this arc, and do you have a ranking for how much you enjoyed each member of CP9?
Martin Hagen
Usopp’s split with the crew over the Going Merry was a major turning point. How did you feel about that? Did you sympathize with him or understand the crew's side more? Franky becomes a major character in the arc. What were your impressions of him, his backstory, and his interactions with the Straw Hats? The introduction of CP9 and their secret identities adds a layer of political intrigue. How did you react to the revelation that the government is far more sinister than previously thought? Finally; The scene where the Straw Hats say goodbye to the Going Merry is one of the most emotional in the series. How did it impact you? Did you expect the ship to have such a significant role in the story?
Croutonking65
Thanks. I can’t believe I forgot about the best arc in the series

obviously the foxy arc

-We would love to hear your theories regarding the blank century. You spoke a little bit about it i think during Robin's backstory and I would love it if you could elaborate on it more -What are some side characters you're the most excited to see more about in the future? -Are you satisfied with how Robin's character turned out? -You often talk about Oda's ability to improvise, so how planned do you think this saga was compared to the other ones? -How did you feel about Usopp and about his fight with luffy and how it turned out?

What character that has been mentioned or seen briefly, but not shown extensively are you looking forward to seeing the most? (E.g white beard, dragon etc) Also which strawhat outfit has been your favourite so far throughout the arcs?

Which arc within the Water 7 Saga do you like the most (Long Ring Long Land, Water 7, Enies Lobby, Post-Enies Lobby) and why?
Fay_Lazward
As Carson discussed in the previous discussion(in Alabasta), Robin joins as a crew member might face the moral argument regarding what she willingly/unwillingly did that caused casualties or damages during the previous arc(or broadly speaking, before she became one of the straw hats). Do you think what happened in THIS arc justified her action?

Seeing the developement of One Piece thus far, (World scaling, story, characters and so on.) what do you think that One Piece has to do going forward to keep the momentum it has had so far? What are the strenghts and weaknesses of the Water 7 arc? (Characters, Word scaling and storytelling)

- How do you feel about the crew getting power-ups somewhat late into the story? - Now that Garp has been officially introduced in the Anime, do you have any strong opinions on how he was presented in the live-action as opposed to how he is in the Anime? - How do you feel about Franky, a goofy early arc villain turned crew member? Was it as seamless as a lot of people consider? - What was your favorite subplot during the Water 7 saga?
