The easiest way to conceptualize Gear 3 is to think of a car tire; when flat, it's just a piece of rubber (like Luffy), but once fully blown up, it's hard and can hit you like a truck.

speaking of possible inspiration with aot, luccis flying finger pistols are definitely inspired by togashi with toguro from yu yu hakusho and they have pretty similar roles as villains

The Manga is definitely better at pacing, but even in the Manga they still have tons of moments where they cut to things just for a few panels to remind us that it’s happening. The difference is obviously that a few panels you can just read in seconds.

Love the "Luffy, it's good to see ya buddy!" reference that Carson sneaked in, that caught me off guard. Man, Lucci requested some backbone and Luffy delivered a fresh Gear 3 straight out of the oven. I feel like the bone in Bone Balloon indicates a bone manipulation technique that Luffy developed as was the case with Gear 2 and forcing his heart to acceleration his blood pumping as a doping mechanism. Gear 2 and 3 a two different techniques focused on two different aspects, Speed and Power. But that's just my opinion on them.

Something that's completely lost in localization is a line Tom used to say very very often. For example '' If you're a man, then do it resolutely '' When he says that in japanese he's actually saying to do things with a "DON!" An Sfx we see very often in the Manga when something big, grandiose or marked by determination happens that can be translated as Boom or Bang Basically Do things with a Bang, while having a blast, and having Fun. And that's the same line Kokoro used in the episode when talking to Chimney. So i thought it was a neat detail as I see you guys love the Water7 Family.

And yeah if the '' Fire Flying Finger Pistol '' feels out of place that's because it's not in the manga, the anime just added that part for cool effect I guess. The normal flying ones are canon tho. You can rationalize that it's done through friction and a combination of two components of the Six powers, Tempest Kick and Finger Pistol however. I love it anyway it's just cool and at this point with Sanji on the side lol

Luffy vs Lucci is such a hype fight You can see how each of the two evolve fighting wise Even though Luffy needs g2nd to match up with Lucci's speed, Lucci's attack in base don't do much as Luffy is rubber, Finger Pistol doesn't damage him and he mostly evades his Tempest Kick. So they both step up their game and Finger Pistol suddenly becomes actually deadly as Lucci now possess Claws, while Luffy harness the speed to match with him But not the strength So we get into Gear3rd Ahhh i love this fight both in anime and manga
