yeah if you didn't realize by now Oda is a huge Mecha Otaku. He said if he ever finishes One Piece he would like to make a Mecha manga next.

You are correct Carson that is why Blackbeard wanted Luffy. Since he was a big time rookie he was going to use him to get into the Seven Warlords. But he got Ace instead who is a much larger name in the pirate world, so it worked out in Blackbeards favor even more.
