I feel ya. I used to love the dub when I first started out but absolutely cant stand it now XD. I caught up some time in 2012 and made it all the way to Skypeia in the dub. I only stopped watching the dub then because that was where Hulu's One Piece episodes ended so I started from episode 1 in sub and watched until I caught up to live at the time. Congratz on your first time watching this arc subbed, hope you're liking it so far.

It does. Tbh this is the first time I’m watching this arc subbed. I started out my OP journey dub only and it wasn’t until a much later arc (when dub wasn’t available) that I got introduced to watching subbed. My opinion might be a bit biased lol

Yeah, since Oars has a major underbite Mayumi Tanaka emulates that and it works so well Imo. in the Japanese dub they use a little bit of reverberation (I think is what you'd call it) so there's this sort of echo that serves to deepen the voice a little. In the English dub I think the frequency of the reverberation is a little off (It feels like an actual echo instead of the sound being played over itself to layer it) so its sounds more like a computer effect than something happening in universe. If any of that made sense

I could tell that Sanji’s and Zoro’s zombies sounded very similar to the original Japanese VA’s, but to me Oars’ sounded so different compared to Luffy. I never looked it up, but I assumed they used a different VA for Oars. I think you’re right on the modulation thing

Mayumi Tanaka voices Oars, Kazuya Nakai voices Jigoro (Zoro's zombie) and Hiroaki Hirata voices Inuppe (Sanji's zombie). All of the Strawhats voice their shadows zombie. It feels like instead of having the VA change their voice, in the dub they talked normally and used a bit of modulation.

They added some kind effect on top of Luffy’s VA so that Oars still somewhat resembles Luffy. Instead of using a completely different VA

They do have similar narrow nose bridges, though their chins look different. Kid has a pointed chin while the other is a butt chin, but I don’t know how growth spurts work for ‘ugly characters’ in One Piece 🤷‍♂️

If I had a nickle for everytime Boldcast had muted audio for a one piece episode, I'd have two nickles. Good job on it only being twice after 361 eps, for real for real, though, haha

Fun Fact: Ryuma, the zombie samurai with Brook's shadow, was the main character of a one shot manga called Monsters that Oda drew way back when he was a 19 year old apprentice. It was reprinted in 1998 as part of Wanted!, a collection one-shots Oda drew before One Piece. When Ryuma showed up in Thriller Bark fans of his work were excited, especially when he confirmed that he considers Monsters to be canon to One Piece. Earlier this year Monsters was animated by Netflix, so you should totally check it out after the next episode.

Cliffhanger so good. I definitely noticed Naoki Tate's style during most of the episode His drawings are very loose but extremely fluid and i love everytime he's present in a scene or episode. Unironically One of my favorite fights in One Piece and it's Usopp with fake cockroaches and balloon hammer. You can't make this up😂😂😂
