thats an interesting take on it! Though if you have seen the Korra series then you know what happend to him in the end xD

I like to imagine that by "taking his library back" the Knowledge spirit meant that he is returning to the spirit realm with it and the professor, being taken there as well, would become a spirit himself and he may be able to spend the eternity he wanted to in the library.
