They already explained in episode 255 everything. Ennies Lobby is important because its the ''gate'' to other 2 more important islands, Impel Down and Marineford, Marineford is the real HQ and Impel Down the prison. But Ennies Lobby is simple a gate that connect paths to both Islands, once a criminal passes this gate he is either going to Impel Down or Marineford, meaning their destiny is sealed. Thats why its known for being the ''justice island'.
