I just love how Pluton made Carson think of Plutonium before anything, because that was also my first exact thought at this point my first watch, and it hit me with nostalgia, and forever shaped my personal theory stances because it was my first instinct. Baratie and Arlong Park may have first hooked my emotions, but this episode and arc is where the worldbuilding, intrigue, and mystery made my interest permanent.

I don't know if you guys seen ep 118 yet, but I deffinitly would like to hear you guys elaborate on Nami's first ever true battle in the series with out the intervention of the other straw hats. This is development!!

I guess in the One Piece world, what Usopp made for Nami could be at this point considered as part of the "science" in this world more than a "magic" aspect of it. Usopp made it for her without really understanding its potential, but Nami is supposed to be uniquely placed to understand the interactions between the takts. It's part of Oda's idea of setting up her weather-related affinity etc as you already noticed with the cyclone she detected out at sea etc.

BOLDcast likes Naruto, HunterXHunter and FullMetal Alchemist and then get to watch One Piece and sees all the similarities between the shows. I don't have a critical eye so I never made any of the connections you make and I find that part of why I enjoy your content so much.

The conversation between Nami and Usopp is a really important one and I love that Oda acknowledges their weaknesses, especially looking at the opponents they are gonna be facing on the grand line. Pluton name drop let's goooooo.

yea it tends to be one piece is a year or multiple ahead of the similar story arcs from other series. about a year before fullmetal.

It looks like the manga chapters for Alabasta started first, around October of 2000 where as Full metal Alchemist started its release in July of 2001. I don't know enough about full metal alchemist to know exactly what part you guys were talking about but if its near the beginning of the manga then you're totally right that there could have been some back and fourth going on. I think Oda had a general idea of what Alabasta would be before the release of Full Metal Alchemist but that's just speculation on my part based on what I understand about the general structure Oda had for the One Piece story before it was even published. Like Briana above me said, they could also have just had similar inspirations that they both drew from independently

Yeah.... I could see you guys deciding to suspend your disbelief with a lot of the clima-tact stuff LOL. Love the discussion on Pluton. I think the seven deadly sins were pretty popular around that time - FMA began publishing in 2001, the same time this part of the manga was being published. Other stuff was also playing around with the trope that both likely took inspiration from - Inuyasha, Kamen Rider, etc.
