Following up on what you discussed at the end, what makes One Piece so emotional for me is how they handle grief and trauma. Each Strawhat has had some form of foundational hardship which put them on the path they are on today. To me this makes the characters feel incredibly rounded. For example, during Robins "I want to live" moment at Ernies lobby - it was already a very emotional moment in itself, but the fact that Robin was breaking through long standing trauma she had as a child and growing from it (learning to trust in others again) makes the whole moment feel "real".
