Yes, for now it's very random , as the game progress I'll add new power to James and the potions/items who will change the way the fight system work.

I'm having a really hard time with combat. I won once out of like 10 fights with goblin. I was hoping that guy was going to give me the sword to do more damage. Is it just random rock paper scissors?

Yes, after generally I made the game in a way for people to miss anything , tried to make sure all events are available at different time and except if you decided to not do anything with someone it will avoid canceled stories by mistake ( for example : Brent in the party where you can start his stories if you managed to fail to start it at beginning)
