Chapter 525 Diverging Possibilities
Ilea found no human corpses in the hall that hadnt already been there.
What did you try to achieve here? she wondered, looking at the Elder of the Order.
She wasnt sure it was actually him but most of their knowledge suggested such.
She sent a few peaceful thoughts and emotions to the mind lurking below, not ready to find out who or what it was quite yet.
A few blinks brought her out to the gate, its flawless form still a part of this reality, a gateway to another word. The world she now called her home.
Ilea stepped through and found Hector on the other side.
I saw the message, he said. Well done.
It wasnt me who killed her, Ilea said. The others?
In the factory. Your friend survived, sleeping off the heavy wounds now. Michael apparently got her out in the end. Hes already busy working through the information we got from this, Hector said.
What information? Ilea asked.
Hector chuckled. You didnt think it weird that a blood mage obsessed with magic came to help with the war efforts of an Empire that restricts it?
Go on, she said.
Michael was here to see what the ritual did. He must have understood a large part of it before coming to this shit town and Im pretty sure hes the reason this last ritual went so well, Hector said.
Really? You think he supplied the Order with information? she asked. Why? Just to see what they would achieve? she said.
You say that like its a minor thing. We found another realm. Im sure hes going back in there the moment he knows its safe, Hector said. Im not sure you understand the value of that little gate behind you.
Lots of powerful creatures to fight, Ilea said and nodded.
Hector laughed.
See, thats why you should be a pirate and not choose the role of a righteous knight or benevolent ruler, he said.
Youre going back to loot now? she asked, ignoring his comment. Her stance on him hadnt changed.
One dangerous creature died. Theres plenty more. I need a moment to recover. Those were death and astral spirits, Ilea. Do you know how rare even the former is? I havent even heard of the latter! he said. And theyre nearly all above five hundred. I need my crew to even try and deal with that.
He shook his head and sighed. And that fucking annoying cold. My water froze before it even hit the targets. Neely nearly died. I nearly died!
Wheres Velamyr? she asked.
He basically died. But its not that easy, killing a high level time mage, Hector said. Trust me, I tried. Michaels retelling was pretty funny though. I dont think he knew. Probably assumed the General risked his life in their battle.
He probably still did, if he nearly died, Ilea said.
Youd like to think that, right? Youre unkillable too. I wouldnt even know where to begin. You fought a level four hundred sapient creature, with two unique Classes. And you somehow didnt die. That fucking beast took me apart in ten seconds. If she had focused on me for a few minutes, I wouldnt be here right now, Hector said.
Ilea didnt go into how close she got to death in there. Hector knew they both constantly threaded a thin line. It was the only way to improve at a reasonable pace at this stage.
You survived too, Ilea said.
Thats true say, youre not interested in fighting those hordes on my side? he asked.
She smiled and shrugged.
Hector, Hector. You know very well that I can take them myself. Why would I share with you? she asked.
Because youre a nice and upstanding human, ready to save a fellow mage, he tried.
Theres no reason for you to face them anymore. Dont think Ill come to save your ass, she said and meant it.
He looked genuinely hurt. For less than a second.
Teleport far when you go meet them, a few local investigators are trying to figure out why the mana density is increasing in this district, he said.
She nodded.
Ill stay here for a while. Dont worry, I wont kill any of your precious Dark Ones should they chose to join me here, he said.
Ilea doubted it but she also doubted his words on the others.
A few quick blinks brought her into the factory hall.
Two Michaels were present, working on a few desks they had gathered.
Youre back are the creatures dead? he asked and looked at her.
Ilea checked on Felicia, touching her brow as she felt her friends condition through her healing.
You got her out? she asked.
One of the Michaels stopped his work. Yes. She was mortally wounded. Her survival was uncertain, as was mine.
Ilea glanced at him. Thank you.
What about Velamyr? she asked.
The creatures? Michael insisted.
Dead. But there were many more. Spirits who Im sure will come for the city sooner or later, she said.
Im not so sure. Powerful barriers kept out the cold in the palace. Not a single spirit attacked despite the extensive battle. Perhaps the defenses are there for more than just the weather, he suggested.
As to Velamyr Ryse. A spell activated when his heart was destroyed. I felt both time magic and a teleportation spell. Both quite powerful. I suspect hes somewhere in the Empire now, in a place only he is aware of, the man said.
Youre sharing secrets like that with someone that isnt even a member yet? Ilea asked with a smile.
Michael gave her a long look. The Empire of Lys is a powerful player and Ryse is a strong piece on the board. Im simply sharing a piece of information that might help you in the future, he said.
She nodded. With what she knew on his views about magic, she could definitely see how an alliance with her and Ravenhall would be more interesting than stronger ties with Lys. Maybe there were more personal reasons involved too but she knew very little about the two men, let alone their relationship.
You lied to me, didnt you? she asked.
The second Michael glanced her way now too.
He smiled and nodded. The pirate hinted at it. Or did you figure it out yourself?
You told them how to do the ritual? Youre good with space magic runes, arent you? she said, not sharing the fact that Hector had told her. She didnt even know what hint he meant.
Not good, no. That wasnt a lie. They were simply abysmal. Im surprised a blood mage of Elder Zions level could have this little knowledge of blood magic rituals. Fanaticism truly is a breeding ground for magical accidents and misinformation. Their focus on sacrifices made the whole process more unstable than they had intended. I was sure it would fail nonetheless, at least preventing the unneeded death of tens of thousands but alas, I was wrong,
I assumed the other side to be simply incredible at space magic. To force a connection between realms. It was quite disappointing to find no runes in their realm, already taken by the hidden figure responsible for this ritual. The Mantis you and the pirate have killed, I presume, he said.
Likely, she said. He did inform the enemy but the fact that he saved the citys population remained. Had the original ritual gone off, theyd still be cleaning up the Cursed.
Ilea just wasnt sure what would be worse in the end.
The gate has to be closed, she said.
Under no circumstances, Michael said. Its a gate to a new realm potentially new magic, ancient knowledge by sapient creatures living in that city. The ritual alone, if we can somehow find the knowledge. It would let us research long range space magic gates with an actual possibility of success!
Ilea didnt share anything about the project she founded herself.
I dont think you understand that world is lost. Whatever that city had once been, its rulers are dead. Its population is dead. Spirits of insane power roam the wastes and they will find that city, that temple, no matter how powerful the defenses are. And when they come through to Elos, the north will look like a holiday vacation spot compared to here, Ilea said.
He paced around for a few seconds. I Ive faced Spirits of Death before. Im aware of the dangers. I just think the potential rewards still overshadow the risks. Surely not all of them would go through the portal? Many would return once they feel the mana here. Or they will remain in Gyffold and its surroundings, the ambient mana slowly rising in the coming years, he said and stopped her reply with a gesture. Either way we cannot close the gate. Ive said it to Ryse and Ill say it again to you. With my power, its simply impossible. Perhaps if I could research the ritual, the runes from the other side.
I wont try to stop any of your from scouring that temple but if I find a way to close the gate, I will, Ilea said.
Michael again just looked at her, his copy continuing its work.
I understand. I havent fought the hordes the Pirate has mentioned. His stories tend to be exaggerated but if you think the risk unacceptable, I wont try to disprove it. You two are more experienced when it comes to combat after all, he said.
Surprisingly reasonable, she thought and walked back to Felicia, stroking her hair lightly. She knew the risk of showing their relationship but with everything else Michael knew, it might even be an advantage for her friend. Felicia wasnt powerless herself after all. Taking her as a hostage or killing her to get to Ilea would prove dangerous.
Did you lie about the little countermeasures you set up too? she asked.
Michael raised a brow. No. There was a high chance they would use my information but one can never be sure. Should they have done the ritual their way, the districts we prepared would have been spared. But my word is all you have on that. I could share the ritual runes and countermeasures with you if you wish to have them studied.
Just like that? she asked.
I would ask for suitable compensation of course, Michael said.
Ilea smiled. I see.
She formed an ashen armchair and plopped down. Ilea needed four baths and a restaurants worth of food.
The ritual was stopped and Felicia had survived.
She summoned a meal and started eating, closing her eyes as she finally read through the many notifications.

The levels were quite formidable for the comparatively short fight. She had gotten more out of the city clearings. Those had been full days of constant battle and killing. Ilea assumed the much higher danger here coupled with a few above six hundred creatures resulted in the level ups.
Much more direct danger but in the end I could still just go in and fight them, then escape. If the Astral Spirits dont try to hunt me down actively, I should have no issue just fighting those hordes for weeks on end, she thought with a grin.
Ilea had considered fighting Miststalkers but these spirits were generally at a higher level and their capabilities werent exactly mind blowing. Spirits of Death at least.
Some of the creatures could prevent blink but Displacement solved that issue entirely.

Five skills at thirty for Kin of Ash before Sentinel, she thought. The fact that nothing had gotten to thirty one by now suggested that it really was the current highest possible level.
She wondered when another tier would show up. Could also be that it just takes years to get to thirty one.

The skills were coming along nicely.
Each level just provides a single stat point. I could just fight for hours on end in those hordes while trying to not kill anything but should I really just ignore leveling?
Evolutions would come one way or the other but it will become harder as time goes on to get them.
She really had to get her skills higher before pushing on. Even if her third Class wouldnt evolve at two or three hundred like she suspected, her main Class skills should be capped before reaching four hundred.
Ilea quickly checked and found that she could level all three active skills of her third Class to the third tier. Each would cost one Core skill point.
I have so many at this point.
She quickly thought about the three skills. Force, Displacement, and Flare of Creation.
The latter two had proven to be simply incredible.
Flare of Creation added a new dimension to her damage, slowing enemy regeneration while damaging magical constructs, health, and mana. The immunities and resilience bonus were just additional.
Displacement was simple enough but already it had allowed her to bypass so many anti teleportation enchantments and even abilities. She thought herself lucky to not have encountered the same kinds of Spirits of Death before.
The offensive utility it provided created so much chaos amidst enemy lines, let alone the fact that she could even teleport allies.
Force had been useful, yes. It had saved her in a few close situations but she couldve likely blinked or displaced herself out just as well. The stopping effect was minuscule and did essentially the same as Displacement when it came to the enemy spells impact on her.
Shed rather throw projectiles back at enemies than just stop them. Maybe if she were a heavier fighter with a focus on armor and shields. The reality was that Ilea constantly moved. Most projectiles were either dodged or hit her on purpose to activate Sentinel Core.
The concentrated pushes were nice to have and definitely inconvenienced some high level targets of a similar size and weight as herself but compared to the other skills it just kind of fell behind.

Ilea decided to give the other available active skills a shot before making a decision on Force. The other two she advanced with one core skill point each. She didnt check her General skill levels yet.

2nd stage: The pale flame settles within your core. Flare of Creation now affects enemy health regeneration. This effect is higher for areas directly touched by the Flame of Creation.
3rd stage: Your experience with Flare of Creation allows you to infuse your magical constructs with its effects. For each level in the third tier, the skills upkeep is reduced by a static 10 [10] points of health per second and you may sacrifice an additional static 100 [100] points of health per second to enhance the skills effects.

She read through the new part twice before she smiled. The upkeep would reduce the cost from three fifty to just fifty points of health per second. And could I?
She stopped herself from testing the new power right next to Michael but was very interested.
A hundred points for each level meaning I could sacrifice three thousand points of health per second at level thirty? Thats nuts I dont think this skill should exist with someone having Sentinel Reconstruction in the third tier.
Ilea couldnt help but giggle to herself, trying to hide the noise with more food stuffed into her mouth.
She focused again and checked Displacements third tier.

Shift space to your will, making an object or person appear somewhere else.
2nd stage: Your familiarity with teleportation and Space Magic allow you to move one additional object for each level in the 2nd and 3rd tier. Magical constructs are now affected by Displacement.
3rd stage: You may choose two flat areas and connect them through space. At the time of marking an area, it has to be within the range of Displacement. Areas have to be connected within one minute of activating the spell and cannot be further apart than 500m [875m]. This ability can only be used every 600 seconds [255 seconds]. Additionally you may change the orientation of the objects you displace.
Space Magic
Ilea decided to test this one instead of trying to understand what exactly any of it meant. Being able to change the orientation of things is pretty tight.

I wonder if the portals are moveable, e.g. if she can create it on a shield and then move the shild and if yes she could create one on her armor and the second one somewhere else :D maybe even use it similar to displacement to redirect even more attacks

I think that is part of the reason she chose it. The Pirate seemingly chose a third class that connects 100% with his main classes and battle tactics(water/ocean) while Ilea chose something half&half. She has a new magic type(space magic), while also getting buffs to her body enhancement build. She has multiple different body enhancement skills that all compliment each other

I don't think that they would be 800 meters apart anymore. Once the portal breaks, wierd spacy things would probably happen and mess with the distance

I feel like llea should probably take some time into learning some practical rituals and stuff or at least know their limitations and such. Right now she's just running off of her inherent power from classes and skills, and it works pretty damn well, but I don't think it would hurt her to be able to set up rituals and use her magic outside of her skills like many others seem to be doing. Hell of she actually seriously wants to close the portal learning some magic know how is kinda essential. Plus learning magic outside of her skills might be one of the only ways to keep advancing her space awareness and ultimately her ashen magic skills.
It's quite interesting that the portal can be sustained by simply existing in the first place. Taking a wild guess, I think that it acts like a spaceship in a vacuum. So you have a place really high mana connected to another place with very low mana relatively and a stable veil (dimension wall) that separates them. If that wall gets a hole in it the flow of mana stops it closing if the lower pressure area can suck mana out of the higher pressure area fast enough. As long as there is even a crack the portal will form. The size of the portal would be where it is big enough such that it balances with the rate at which the world tries to naturally close it. Second piece of evidence would be when Ilea fell into Elos... Earth has such a low mana that if the dimensional wall was this enough and next to Elos the wall could naturally crack a little from the difference in pressure, and the turbulence could suck someone in; the rift. So how could she close the portal? Temporarily balance the mana on both sides so there is no waterfall of mana keeping it open. Placing an enchantment to banish mana around the portal on the specters side would work, or for an immediate one she could smoother Elos side in Ash empowered by Creation fire to create a surge of mana from Elos... Alternatively, and really simply, she could create a displacement portal somewhere in the mantis temple and a second one on top of the mantis-side portal which would make the space chaotic and could collapse the portal if it manages to block the mana for long enough. All speculation but I can't stop wondering how she could play around with portals~

2 birds 1 stone. Whole point of not using L.400+ monsters was to scorch earth, terrorize and create a deadly wall of monsters to run attackers into the ground and force them to either retreat or overextend, I speculate.

yeah, one could have a *lot* of fun with this ability, even if clever tricks like that aren't really her normal method ("it worked,but...I wanted to punch it. sniffle, sniffle").

good pts; a resist she hasn't leveled, new tough monsters in abundance, high difficulty, maybe new things... I imagine her 1st priority will be closing the gate, tho, as all those critters would cause havoc on Elos's plains.

So basically, Ilea the football QB can, as long as she's on her own 20, pass the ball off to a teammate running hard at her in the wrong direction. And then displace them going in the right direction, right at the end zone.
My guess is at that at some point (maybe level 500?) core points will allow her to unlock extra "slots" for active/passives skills, up to the max. Potentially even an additional couple for each of her first two classes.

I am suddenly intensely curious if Ilea could connect the 2 realms if she marks the areas on each side of the portal before she figures out how to collapse it. Nah too broken.

I might've missed it but how does the portal relate to the Baralia war again? I had initially thought they were using the ritual simply as a scorched earth policy to slow down Lys but it turns out they were using it because they legitly wanted to connect to that dimension (unrelated to the war), killing off whole cities was a side effect of them not knowing a more efficient way, and the Baralia king not intervening presumably because it does slow down Lys afterall? Or is that still speculation.

Something else I thought of. Why was the order doing these rituals in the first place. The king of Barilia was pushing for them I remembered. I think the reason is that the king knows he is losing the war. The order then tells him about the ritual and that they might be able to open a portal to another realm. In this other realm are very powerful Mantis that need a new world. The king probably wants to use them to win the war. The Mantis queen and her group were certainly powerful enough to help. This is why the king was sacrificing entire cities of his own people. That's the part i didn't understand. It makes the king seem even worse to me. He wasn't killing off entire cities because he was insane. He was doing it to bring in reinforcement to help him stay in power.

I'm not sure what good that third tier displacement is, but since it's already such a crazy useful skill all she really needs is the levels. Maybe it'll work through barriers?

I'll try to put my thoughts in order for you. This is just a guess on my part though. The Mantis world is dead. It's a frozen wasteland with hordes of spirits killing the living. The Mantis queen knows this and are trying to escape with her people. They are contacted by the order and told they will set up an escape portal to the orders world. The portals aren't working right. Several times they send Mantis people into but they don't come back. Then the order finally gets the portal right (Michael gives them the info) So then the orders leadership comes into the Mantis world telling them the portal now works they can escape. So the Mantis queen sends a scout. The solo Mantis that went through the portal and ran into Ilea and the GL group. The scout discovers that the mana density on the other side is way to low. The portal is a death trap for the Mantis people. So when Ilea shows up the Mantis queen is killing the order people because she believes they tricked her. After that the queen decides that there is no escape and goes to face the death horde and die .

My assumption is the Queen wanted to go out in a blaze of glory and show the humans the corruption after she realized the humans would be capable of defeating her. Or she's an alien species with different thoughts/ideals/emotions that we just won't understand as humans.

So this was a world that fell to experiments similar to what Ilea managed to stop in the North? The mention of corruption is making me think it's the same perpetrators.

Yeah if fighting there for just a little while got her all that than she should spend at least a day there and maybe get most of the way to lvl400 for her 2 main classes. Who knows maybe she could even get her 3rd class to lvl300? It'll be interesting to see what it turns into. Honestly its been a bit mixed so far to me. Some of the skills have been pretty good but others seem fairly ho hum in comparison.

Thanks for the chapter. Great fighting scenes. It isn't clear yet just what was going on with the Mantis group. I'll assume that their world was ending and it was causing the spirits of death to grow in number. While I don't know exactly what was happening with the Mantis queen. In can make a few assumptions. I think once the Mantis scout went out of the portal when it opened and found Ilea and the GL group. The Mantis found out just how low the mana density was on there. It then went back and reported that the mana was to low to sustain them. This is when the Mantis queen killed the order group. She found out the couldn't escape to the other world. She had no way to know that there was places in the world with higher mana, all she knew was that there wasn't enough density for them on the other side. Once she didn't think there was an escape she decided to kill herself by taking on the dead horde.

Well when they go through they go insane from a lack of mana remember? I suspect she was trying to get them killed too by leading them out into that field with all the Death Spirits and stuff and was going a bit insane with grief and depression. I have nothing to back that up though. That is just me trying to put myself into the mindset of someone who is watching their race die out with their last chance to survive turning out to be a perverse farce of failure and more death.

ya, it seems like the spirits were about to destroy them and they set up the ritual to try and help their population escape, but the first few times the order fucked it up so most of the population went insane and was lost. the queen killed them since she lost all her people and then decided to fight to the death since there was nothing left to protect.

Kinda. Has a looooong reload time though (255sec). I'm thinking of it more as a nifty way to redirect a killing shot back at a attacker or onto another attacker. Lots of possibilities to abuse this though!! If she needs to spend Core points to lvl T3 3rd Class skills then this might be a 1 point wonder though. The gotcha to that is if levels in it DRASTICALLY reduce the 'reload' time. If at T3 lvl30 it can be used once every 5sec or so than it'd basically be L33t /\/\4jj1(4|_ HAAX0r for Ilea. edit: so I was looking at the wiki and it says that Core points are only needed to unlock the T3 for a 3rd class. After that I'm assuming they level like normal. That does change things IMO. Even if the 'reload' time is only reduced moderately with each level it'd probably still be worth getting. If nothing else it'd make dealing with foes who have strong Space Magic skills muuuuuch easier to deal with.

Dunno about projectiles. Orientation does not automatically mean that the momentum is redirected. It could just be rotation. It doesn't mean the velocity vector changes.

ok, so if their civilization was being wiped out, and they made a portal to escape/get help/whatever, why in the heck did the mantis ignore the friendly overtures from the strongest being to come thru? And who/what is left sending regret thoughts? I'm still pretty confused on what happened there, although the action was clear (the rationale wasn't, yet)... And in the end the mantis wanted to die by the corruption instead of at their hands? how does that make sense? Or was it simply an authorial choice to show us the corruption? (unlikely, I think). It's interesting there appear to (at least potentially) be corruption-plagues of many flavors of magic. It makes sense, and seems an interesting analog to our own world's (mundane) virology. Also, interesting to see a world that lost that fight, validating her concern w/ the one in the North to a degree. Sigh, now I have to wait for more. TY for the chapters!

It just doesn't have the multipliers to be useful in a direct role. Her other active skills either get her body enhancement bonus, which is huge. Or they're like Displacement where they're rarely being opposed by high tier enemy skills.

It's sad that force was so weak, I had high hopes for it. Oh well. I wonder if we're going to learn why the order wanted to go to that particular realm so badly and what kind of secrets (or new paths to power) Ilea will uncover there.

I'm glad she's trying skills other than Force, it always felt very underwhelming. Phaseshift and Shroud both have a lot of potential.
Isn't Ilea becoming a counter to Job build similar to her? Flare of Creation is completely broken......

He's not the most credible guy though and may lie to her for his own benefit (e.g having her waste time before going to lvl 400 if he tells her it's possible to get 3rd35.)

Before you start comparing the level gains to those from the various cities she's fought in with Hector - I plan to make it more clear that in those chapters (500-504) more time passed and more monsters were killed than I believe is currently the assumption.
