Chapter 474 Guardian
Ford could hear the troll approach through the dark tunnel. He could hear its pained breaths.
His face was strained in an expression of anguish and concentration. One step at a time, he told himself, pushing further as he felt warm blood dampen his arm.
Hadley had been hit directly, the woman much smaller than himself. They had everything planned out but none of their team had noticed the sleeping troll in a dark corner of the cavern.
One mistake had cost them a successful mission. The last five ventures had nearly been too easy. A few brushes with death but nothing major to speak of.
A single strike had taken out Hadley. The other two ran off, chased by the furious monster.
He didnt fault them. Neither were strong enough to carry the injured woman nor were they in any position to fight the creature. A distraction was the best chance they could have given him.
The second troll had lashed out in a state of confusion, half asleep and injured by the blade Hadley had stuck into its eye at the last moment.
Ford had moved as quickly as he could, scorching the frenzied beast with everything he had before grabbing the woman and getting the fuck out of there.
He knew that the creatures had a good sense of smell. The blood dripping to the ground could easily be tracked. He tried to cover it, backtracked to set a wrong trail. But he was simply too slow.
The girl was weighing him down.
Lilith will save us, he told himself. She had saved everyone who had been about to die. But she was human too, despite her abilities. She could make a mistake, could have lost them because of the separation.
One second too late and the troll would rip them apart. He wasnt even sure if Hadley was fine.
Check, he told himself. The troll would find them, sooner or later.
He laid the woman down carefully. Breathing, good. He took his pack and grabbed a few bandages, replacing the hastily applied one, already soaked through with blood.
His hands were shaking but he ignored it, ignored the exhaustion and the sounds of the approaching troll. Extend, clean the wound, apply pressure, three, four times around, secure. The steps were practiced, trained a thousands times over.
This time the wound hadnt been inflicted by Lilith or one of their own but by a wild monster out to kill them.
Ford steadied his breathing and moved the unconscious woman into a lateral position to make sure she wouldnt choke on her own vomit or blood. Her head and back should have been uninjured but he couldnt be entirely sure.
He dragged the woman to a dark corner in the cavern. The only sounds he heard were his own breathing and the dragging noise of her leather armor against the cold rock.
Ford stopped his movements when he heard the steps. He held his breath and carefully put down the woman.
Faint light from crystals growing on the walls illuminated parts of the area and with it the furry creature stepping towards him, bloodshot red eyes staring straight at his own eyes.
[Cave Troll lvl ??]
It didnt carry a weapon but its broad arms would be enough to kill them ten times over. The creature was at least three meters in height and two meters broad. It moved with a hunched back to even fit into the cave.
Any wound Hadley had managed to inflict was gone and with it the knife that had been stuck in its head. Maybe it had been foolish to approach even one of them but they had to grow, had to achieve more. And they had been ready.
Just not for two.
Both Orthan and Sidney had talked often about the importance of numbers and cooperation. Any sapient group of beings could hunt down monsters of a higher level than themselves. There were risks involved but it was possible.
Four against one was a risk. Four against two was suicide.
The troll took a step forward. One of its eyes seemed lazy, glassy.
It is injured still recovering? he asked himself.
Shell come.
She will save us.
He saw the demon who had invaded their home flash before his eyes. He remembered how helpless he had felt when his father died in his arms.
The troll came.
No, he said, lifting his arms towards the creature.
His hands were steady.
Mana flowed and formed into flames. Flames that could only destroy, could not heal.
Ford would not rely on the specter of ash anymore.
She had brought him here, had trained him, had sheltered him.
She had given him the opportunity to chose life. The ability to protect others from the loss that haunted him at night.
If he didnt fight now, if he didnt protect Hadley, why was he even here?
Fire blazed and expanded, a trail of heat lashing out to the right as his eyes and hands followed the dodging creature, its size entirely too large to avoid the spell.
It pushed through, arms shielding its head and chest against the spell. Its fur caught fire as it cried out in anger.
Ford stepped to the side, ducking under a wild swing before he set off a fireball from a close distance.
The spell exploded and sent him staggering back, stunning the massive creature for a split second.
He ground his teeth, focusing as he steadied himself.
Dont you dare touch her, he thought and immediately attacked again.
The troll was focused on him, rushing at him with a frenzied push.
He had no way to step out of the way, hands in front of him to take some of the force as he jumped to the side.
Ford was hit by the monsters shoulder, his ribs and a bone in his right leg snapping before he slammed against the hard ground.
He coughed up blood, turning off his pain as he rolled to the side.
The sounds and the wet feeling in his chest didnt indicate that any of that was smart. The fists slamming onto the ground behind him suggested otherwise.
Only turn off your pain in emergencies.
He stood up, finding his leg to be unreliable. It still worked. Left heavy then, he thought and formed another fireball.
Ford waited until the last moment, sidestepping a punch before his spell slammed into the monsters head.
He wouldnt be able to keep this up for much longer. A step brought him closer to the monster, his left hand forming another fireball and his right grabbing the dagger from his belt.
Throat, heart, spine, he heard the words in his mind. High regeneration demanded that weak points had to be taken out.
The spine was unreachable and he didnt know if he could even penetrate to the monsters heart, let alone find his way past its spine.
His spell exploded right when the creatures arms closed around him.
It moved back its head, crushing his sides at the same time.
Fords sight went blurry, using meditation now that he wasnt moving anymore. Wait.
He ignored his health and focused entirely on the monsters throat.
His hand rushed up and the dagger slammed in. It slipped off a little but he still penetrated.
A fireball exploded near his waist, pushing back the already loose arms of the monster. His own resistance to the magic was higher.
Both of them slammed to he ground.
Ford ignored the cold feeling in his gut, the smell of blood in his nose and the wet and heavy feel of his gear.
The troll grasped at the dagger in its throat, gurgling in pain as it struggled to breath.
Serves you right, he thought and tried to form another spell. The flame came to life but snuffed out a moment later.
His vision went dark as he heard the dagger clatter to the ground.
It didnt matter anymore.
He had fought and he had lost.

Ford used all his remaining strength to push himself up. His eyes and his magic didnt work anymore but he still had his hands.
He wouldnt let her die.
Never
Never again
Blood flowed to the ground below him as his vision cleared.
That is a lot.
It felt warm, comfortable.
He had expected death to feel cold and miserable.
Maybe it only felt like that to the people left behind.
The bleeding stopped, likely because he simply had no more blood to lose.
His breathing stabilized.
He had to find the knife, had to get to its heart, maybe a tendon.
He turned his head right to find the knife and instead found two legs covered in ash.
Shes here, he thought and immediately relaxed, falling down to the ground. It was her magic, the warmth, the comfort.
His heart felt cold instead. He had failed again. He had not been able to protect her. He was too weak.
He heard a whistling sound before something wet hit the ground.
The trolls head, its features warped, surprised and angry.
Well done, Ilea said before she vanished.
Ford forced himself to get up, some of his wounds not yet healed entirely. He activated his pain perception again, wincing at the overflow of sensation. A groan escaped his lips but he pushed onward, walking towards Hadley. Lilith was standing over her.
Shes fine, she said and turned.
I failed, Ford said and straightened himself.
You fought. And you lost, the woman said, ash receding to reveal her face. There is no shame in that.
Im weak. Im not like you. I never will be, he heard himself say.
You are a Sentinel. And your mission isnt over. Wallow in self pity once you have returned to safety, Lilith said and vanished.
What did I do? he thought and slapped his cheeks. Shes right. Im still here. She saved me. I did all I could. And I will continue to do so.
The embarrassment made his cheeks heat up but right now was not the time to think about that. He stepped towards Hadley and once again lifted her up over his shoulders.
Bad idea.
He took the time to apply a few supportive bandages to his own injuries. Half his pack was emptied to safe on weight. Only a little food, water, and medical supplies remained.
Ford grit his teeth and carried the still unconscious girl out of the cave, his eyes and ears peeled for monsters.
There was time to regret his decisions later, to analyze his failure in a hundred different ways. Right now the life of his teammate was more important. The mission he was given. To survive.
He quickly checked the messages he had heard appearing within his mind.

Ford stopped for a moment, his eyes widening as he read through the next part.

Has risked their own life to safe another.
The Guardian Medic combines the combat and defense oriented teachings of the Medic Sentinel Corps with a focus on healing magic. This healer will keep their allies alive and protected, no matter what. Healers may be desirable in a team of adventurers but a Guardian Medic trained in Ravenhall can keep up with the best of them, able to provide support and protection during combat without losing to fear or pressure. If someone finds themselves in the worst possible situation, they should pray that one of their allies is a Guardian Medic.
His mind was calm, his breathing even. Trian had told them to wait if class change opportunities presented themselves but Ford knew that he had found his.
Nobody would take this from him. It was the first step to the power he needed. The power to protect.

Ford immediately felt the weight increase on his back, the few points he had invested into Strength from his Fire Mage class vanishing in an instant.
Guardian Spirit activated and the weight decreased once more. It used a substantial amount of mana but he needed it right now. Wisps of power in gray and white color occasionally showed on his arms and body as he looked down on himself.
The self pity and pain from before was gone. The mission was a success. If he managed to get back alive that was.
His focused heal spread through him. A pitiful display compared to Liliths torrent of life. But this one was his. His alone.
The rest of their team soon found the survivors thanks to the occasional laugh Ford failed to suppress.
Lilith had saved them too.
Upon his inquiry, Ford realized that he might have really saved Hadleys life after all. And his own in turn.
The rest of their trip was difficult but with a healed Hadley and the confidence his new class brought to both him and his mates, the dangerous way out felt trivial.
Some might argue that he had gotten weaker, giving up the trained skills and levels of his Fire Mage class but Ford had never felt so strong.
The work, pain, and sweat had paid off. He was the first of his team but the others would soon follow. He would make her proud. If only he hadnt lost hope. A pitiful display, one that he would never forget.
Lilith picked them up a few kilometers outside of the dungeon, half frozen rain and strong wind the only challenges remaining.

Guardian Medic, Ilea said with a smile, reading through the class and skill descriptions. Those are as good as some Azarinth Healer skills.
Its a powerful class. Its rare to have that many requirements for a level one class, Trian said. I wanted to scold the kid but his decision was right. Im sure we will have a few of them by the end of the month.
I hope so, Ilea said. Speaking of rarity, the others are just as good if not better.
Mhm, Trian said and opened a bottle of champagne.
I dont like champagne, Ilea said offhandedly.
Its to celebrate. A gesture. Its not about the taste, Trian said and filled two glasses.
How can you say something so blasphemous? Are the others informed yet? she asked.
I will do that tomorrow morning. The students will want to hear the news too. Im not sure if we should share all the requirements quite yet. Some might force stupid risks to achieve them, he said.
Ilea nodded, swirling around the liquid in her thin glass. Ill leave that decision to you.
She took a sip and frowned, leaning on the wall behind her.
The boy Ford, she said in a subdued tone. I was too late. The two would have died if he hadnt risked his life.
Trian smiled and touched her arm. It isnt the first time. And it wont be the last. Soon they will go on missions without you standing over them.
I dont mind you and Claire doing that but , she said and stopped.
Trian sighed. Ilea. You know what kind of monsters are out there. You know war and the fragility of our power. Its been your competent work that has kept them alive so far. Your efforts and theirs. If you shelter them too much, they will become dependent. We have achieved more in a month than most nobles have in years, decades even.
He took a sip and swallowed, savoring the taste. Do you know why?
Because we tortured them and forced dangerous situations? Ilea asked with raised eyebrows.
We trained them, taught them. And we gave them the choice to leave. They want this. Theyre eager. And now were starting to see the results of their hard work and ours. Its only the beginning. Each of them has a sharp mind, a strong will, a choice. And the resources we give them.
He looked at her. Dont assume yourself the only reason they have come this far. You just gave them a jump start. Now watch them grow.

Yeah its a great class but its real hard to get. Few will qualify but it sounds like there were other classes too that the others got. Hopefully they're good as well without being so dangerous to get.

Since they are all starting at level 1 I realized that none of them are gonna have the healer tag for a little while unless they only had 1 class and decided to replace it or they try for a 2nd healer class. That’s probably a good thing for the organization since the medics won’t have a target on their back until they’ve gained some personal strength. I do wonder if the lack of speed boost and inclusion of weapon damage is because of Ford’s abilities and the training or because the sentinels are gonna be decked out in stonehammer steel weapons and armor. I mean if you were in a temple in the middle of nowhere Azarinth Healer is a superior class, but with the gear they are getting Guardian Medic might be better.

The lack of any speed boosts is a big difference, but so is a boost to both weapon and unarmed damage. So he is slower than an azarinth healer, but he has a lot more options for a 2nd class and he can make use of the stonehammer steel for a weapon. Considering the gear available he probably has a higher power output than an azarinth healer.

So good. A fun new class, but now I want to know what the others got. Do they all have the medical sentinel info in the class? Medical Guardian seams defense focused, are any of them more offensively minded? Super interesting that Medical Guardian has a skill that boost weapon skills but doesn't give one itself.

I think it's also worth remembering the goals of the organization. Ilea wants to add healers to adventurer teams that are at least somewhat self-sufficient. Having a healing class, enough offensive skills to get by, and some defense is plenty for her purposes. Of course some are likely to try going solo but that is not the goal.

I hope the level 350 will be chapter 500, but it will come sooner since the release schedule will hopefully pick up a bit(4 chapters/week?) When G. finishes service. We still have foundation of glass, armaments of trials and bit of sentinels before Ilea gets another break and goes off somewhere to play. Oh and the order fuckers. And fire elfie.

The problem I see with the class for now is that it has no attack ability like destruction so insane early solo leveling will not work as well as it did for Ilea. Or at least the killspeed will be slower as the body is weaker, less focus on body enhancement then azerith healer will also mean that the attacks used with weapons or the body itself will be weaker. But then them having a weaker class then the one the MC lucked into at the start is still reasonable. And the class is still awesome and I guess when they Inherit Ileas mindset or ambition or at leas the (resolve skill). to some extend many of them will get quite formidable ones they reach the 200 evolution. And one can hope that the class get's even better with a few more skills revealed. On the other hand having the increased resilience from the start is a good boost. And of course it helps a lot that the class can be teached. and is not relying on some hard to cultivate grass.

Anyone else think a 3rd class evolution optuon of the medic guardian will be medic sentinel? Could have crazy high requirements, but they essentially have achieved the ideals of the medic sentinels so they literally become one.

Maybe she gets a religion that pray to her as the ashen angel who will rebirth the World and expunge all evil or smth. And then she Mayer gets an ash class upgrade at 400. If she ever involves herself with a cult i can only imagine her to do so to fight stronger monsters. Well her cook giving her an ultimatum would work to.

Mother of Medics or Progenitor of Medics would be a nice class for 400 azarinth sentinel to evolve to. I realy hope she doesn't get anything related to the medics as her 3d class. Also i think it is likely that she will get a healer class upgrade at 400 and ash only at 500. Since her achievments as a healer just jumped a lot.

I had the same thought. The flexibility of this class is insane, as well as its ability to work synergistically with other classes. Eventually, they will probably be Guardian Medics who specialize by combining that class with their other one. And what a powerful combination that will make!

I really like it, especially the name. We'll have to see what other skills are gained as they level up. I can't be 100% sure but I have a feeling class evolution's are somewhat influenced by a person's second class. That and not everyone meeting those steep requirements means we could see dozens of variations of Guardian Medic.

That’s a really flexible class. Durability, strength, weapon damage, and shared body enhancement should work for a huge range of classes. Though there is probably other versions such as a mage with say mana regeneration. I suspect some of them require pain resistance in the second tier...

Eh, I don't think selling a class with such potential is a good idea. It's not like she needs money, and even if she does she just has to plunder another Taleen dungeon. Also, if some powerhungry noble or order obtains the class he could spread it and make a real mess. Better to just keep it in the organisation and thoroughly screen the people applying for a position, to see if they have the moral compass and character to even get the class.

Well typically a class will have only 5 skills though. He may only have 1 class unlike Ilea too. 2nd and 3rd tiers are probably a fair ways away for him yet, he just got the class

I understood it as them having gotten better class change options before, but they were not what the organisation was looking for. As in, they got very good DPS or Tank classes but not healing hybrids.

Nice, the only big difference is the damaging heal from the azarinth, right? That should be easily fixed with a second class though. Amazing chapter!

Man, this chapter has me so satisfied. First, we got to see the determination and moral compass of one of the Sentinels. Then the awaited class revealed itself, and it's exactly what Ilea was envisioning when she started this whole thing. And lastly, this will most probably affect her next evlutions, as creating an organisation that a class is based on, like in the Azarith order, is something few can do. Great chapter overall, can't wait for more.

The new class feels more heal and group oriented than the Azarinth ones which feel more like solo oriented fighters who self heal. Be interesting to see how it plays out in a fight but my guess is he'll be a better supporter who can also fight some in a pinch than Ilea who is much better at killing.

I think the two healing skills are really good. Needs to be cleared up if the Focused Heal is limited by touch. It should say that if it is, but it also doesn't say a range.... But channeling your mana pool into a single target heal whilst channeling your regeneration into an AoE heal lets you double up. The AoE heal is a really low amount, but I'm sure there's evolutions that will focus on it more. If you've done healing in a video game you know that's actually a really good pairing. The AoE can finish topping people off or work gradually on those that aren't the focus of damage while your focus goes toward whoever is. I assume that one of the remaining skills will give something for regaining mana though because running out seems like an easy mistake to make with that setup. I like that Medic, Guardian and Sentinel are all skill names. At first I thought Resolve might not pair well with Pain Resistance 3rd but it probably makes it even better. 300% total bonuses while Azarinth Healer only got 200% total with 1% to health regen. A bit disappointed in the requirements of the class, but it tells me there's a limit to the degree of accolades you can combine for a class or evolution....

This is so much better than the Azarinth variants, better focus and better skills, requirements are also harder to get but not random which will make this class much easier to sell and propagate in human culture.
If the others get similar classes then they will get one heck of a starter pack with an awesome armor made from the bones of the founder as a graduation reward XD
I can't wait for the other orders to pick a fight with them thinking that they are a weak order because it's so new only to kick a steel plate. At the speed they are growing in a year or two they might be quite the group of Inmortal Masochists. If the Healing Orders are like the Noble Factions that needs up to a decade to get the same amount of progress.

youou great chapter excited to see the other rare class some other sentinel have unlocked hope all class unlocked is affiliated to the order by name or description :) and maybe a class with ilea name in description :)) i guess its not arcane magic too hard to get this maybe in the future with the enchanter researching the rune on ilea we can hope later with a ceremonie or some shit to get this arcane healing, this class i think is better than aza in the aspect on heal zone and tank we got tank healer :))) but he dont get some percetion shit skill and teleport and damage hope later or combined with is other class mm they need to get another class to synergie with body enhencement and lack of mobility and damage i guess in the aspect they need is heal zone (or + heal hard range) tankiness, mobility (tele, fly or other shit) perception (reflex see true shit op sphere ilea or a skill for survivability in the information departement and some shit for damage (preferatlty a damage than can "pierce" defense like this infusion arcane damage op, ( hey maybe for the other starter class afiliated on the order of sentinel we get some difference like a tank class a more support class with buff a more mobility/scout etc etc like in the future some different "departement" in the sentinel in the starting class and the evolution :))))))) when they "uniforme" and classifie the training, god im excited what the author gonna pull of is hat on this storie later

Holy cow. This chapter is so good, it might be one of the best out of the whole story. Ford's characterization and the combat scenes were very well done. The creation of the class was cathartic. On top of that, we got a good amount of main cast character development: Ilea made a mistake and acknowledged she's not perfect or omnipotent, and Trian acknowledged the students' commitment and growth. The last line is perfect. Thanks for the chapter G. Harthane, you have really outdone yourself!

Magic grass which kills people who eat it and magically and permanently changes their body. giving stat boosts. Yeah the medic will will likely be better than Azarinth Healer in some ways like healing and defense, but I feel as if the Azarinth Healer will have more attack skills and unusual skills. I want to see what happens when a medic eats the bluemoon grass.

IT FINALLY HAPPENED holyshitomgitshereiwantmore. Wonderful chapter that progresses the work Ilea has been doing for quite a while now. It also opens more for the plot later in the novel, once they get going in the world. At the same time, it also lets Ilea spend more time away from them for a bit if the author decides to go in that direction. I like that Ilea was finally able to help found a class based on her principles and ideologies. And it seems super fucking powerful for a starter class. The upgrades are going to be nuts. Mini Ileas here we come!
