That’s exactly how Hopper and Joyce found him too, with that (for lack of a better term) “hose” attached to his mouth. I think you’re right it was season 2 when they like exorcised (what I think was) a part of the mindflayer out of him. But even after all that, Will with the neck goosebumps every time Vecna be lurking or something isn’t over, it’s always been apparent this was going to come back around.
