I JUST saw a documentary on this!! The Satanic Panic largely was kicked off by a book called "Michelle Remembers" which was supposed to be retrieved lost memories (written by her shrink) and all her memories were wild stories of being forced to participate in satanic rituals. It became wildly popular and soon loads of people were having repressed memories of rituals (which were suss AF)...but it sprang from there. And, if you have time, there's a great documentary on the whole phenomenon with Michelle Remembers and the satanic panic -- the Documentary is called "Satan Wants You". 😂. Crazy name, I know!
