Something I just noticed after watching this show many many times over the years, whenever Mai and Zuko are cuddling she constantly positioned in a way that covers his scar. I noticed it because when she mentions the war meeting, his scar is the first thing we see.

Just a add on to your comment- Zuko actually does have some hearing damage as well on that side. If you notice throughout the series he always is shown sleeping with his good ear up. This show is great at little details.
