You're not wrong.. It's just that season 2 gives some more clarity and complexity to character.. which allows understanding. I enjoyed season 1. It's just that season 2 is when I fell in love.

I love this show. The writing is so sumptuous and engaging. By the time they got to the Princes of the New Wolrd speech I was sold. If you get to the end of the first season without being totally in love with at least 3 characters I don't know how to satisfy you. Lol Personally I adore Jack and Anne more than any other characters. Cannot wait to hear your thoughts, but I'm pretty sure you will be a Vane man. You love a bad boy. 🤣

Ok I want to add something to all the people who are saying season 2 is when it gets better: on the one hand, yes, there’s a lot of cringe stuff especially in the pilot. However the entire show is masterfully set up this season so I don’t think you can dismiss it out of hand. Separately I desperately want to give a trigger warning for upcoming episodes but idk if that’s considered a spoiler 🫠.

Not just the theme song. Bear does all the music throughout. And it's all fantastic. Flint is one of my alltime favorite characters as well.. Especially once his backstory is more fleshed out. Wooo man. Man on a mission.

Black Sails is such an interesting show about legends and the power they hold. It is also quite a solemn look at the violence perpetrated by British colonizers in the Americas. Does it always fully land the mark in its criticisms? I'm probably not the right person to judge that. What I can say, however, is that it presents a compelling web of scheming and obsessive pursuit of ... many things. I do have to agree, despite such comments being potentially discouraging, that season 2 is where it really ramps up and things fall into place. It's been years since I watched the show and I'm excited to get back into it!

You have no idea how excited I was to see this!! Before my obsession with Interview with the Vampire, Black Sails was my obsession. It got no where near the attention it deserved, mostly because it came out during peak Game of Thrones era. I'm glad you enjoyed the first episode. I could talk all night about each of those characters, it's so awesome and can't wait to go on this journey with you!

Ooh man this show is filled with favorite characters, Captain Flint is definitely, hands down top 5 favorite characters of all time. This episode is a great set up for our main view points, I love everyone’s introductions. You can already tell the dialogue is fantastic and just becomes more beautifully written. Also the theme song slaps so hard, iconic work by Bear McCreary. This and game of thrones intro I never skip, gets me in the pirate adventure mood!

This is the first show I'm watching along with you for the first time. A few quick reactions: 1. So glad that asshole was killed by Flint. I couldn't have stomached much more of him. 2. Who currently has the page? John Silver (is that the young guy's name who claimed to be the cook)? Or the woman with the dark hair who slept with him and also just slept with the blond woman? And boy oh boy is that man pretty. :) 3. I already love Flint's character. 4. I'm guessing this will be a show full of characters with flawed ethics and morals. LOL. Looking forward to the rest of our journey at sea!

I’m about to watch, thank you Natasha for explaining this part of season 1. The creators always had a plan and they had to do some questionable things to get to season 2! I started rewatching when we were voting and I’m in season 3 punching the air, can’t wait till he gets there Anywho let’s go!!!!!

Just finished the reaction! Do you know Treasure Island at all? This show is basically a prequel to the book but adds in a bunch of real historical figures— like John Silver (the weasel), Billy Bones, and Flint are characters from the book, but Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Charles Vane (the three kind of rival pirates from the other crew) were real pirates. Some of the writing in this season is rough, esp some of the writing for/about female characters. It gets noticeably better after season 1 and honestly even after this episode. But the show came out right when Game of Thrones was big and they really are using some similar tropes/tones through this season. I really think you’re going to dig Flint as well as Vane. Genuinely the most complex, morally grey protagonist I’ve ever seen on tv.

I never skip the intro song for this one, it’s just too good. It’s played on a hurdy gurdy, if you’ve never seen one look up a youtube video or two, it’s a really fascinating instrument with a unique sound!

Yeah and its really heavy in this first ep because they’re doing big “grab your attention” in the pilot moves. It’s crazy how much they’re hiding the “real” plot in this first season and then getting to tell the story they were really working on from season 2 onward
