The show is super layered and subtle. I think one of the reasons Yabu is so engaging is that he’s the only character outside of Blackthorn who often says exactly what he’s feeling. Everyone else is all metaphors and meaningful glances.

Yabushige always plays both sides of the street. Ishido didn’t want Blackthorn executed, but couldn’t openly move against the Christian regents. So our boy, Yabu, does a favor for Ishido by preventing John’s execution AND delivers him to Toranaga. Yabushige gets to look like he’s loyal to both lords.
