First of all, Happy New Year. I know it's a been a bit of rough going these past few months but thanks for sticking around with me and supporting me. It's amazing how many of you have stuck with me this long and actually care about this weird thing I'm struggling to make. I hope I can get back on a normal schedule from here on out. And maybe if I put my nose to grindstone I can get just a little bit close to actually ending this thing. Or at least starting something else in the meantime.
But anyway, yall want a little bit of inside baseball?
I completely scrapped and redrew this page. Which is why it's being posted today instead of December, but even still I might have to go back and rework it depending on how I want to do the next page because it's still not up to snuff for me. So don't be too surprised if it gets replaced.
A lot of the struggle I've had with OOTB the last few months is from forcing myself to draw it in a particular way that's made drawing a page take about 4 times longer than normal. So I'm gonna bite the bullet for the next chapter and try something a little different. I'm gonna try going back to my older way of drawing. Which if I'm being perfectly honest will probably look exactly the same. Every chapter of OOTB looking different is pretty much tradition at this point. But the process will hopefully be a bit easier on me and hopefully it'll let me bang these out a bit quicker from here on.
And yeah I know it's tacky to rant and whine like this but that's the comic making process. Maybe if I dump it all out at the beginning of the year, the rest of the year will be smooth-sailing. Maybe it's worth the price of admission just to see me panic over making a simple comic. Like I've just learned not to have two dramatically different lightscapes in the same place your scenes are but hey it's fine. I'm learning. It's fine.

And about the perfectionism, I feel you man. There's no right way to give up on correcting something, no meter to show apprioprate quality or precision. I usually just follow the rhythm (the voice) of the piece, I can only hope to keep it consistent. And sometimes my brain goes out of its way to do something excellent. It's spontaneous beauty.

about the last panel, you did this in ch17 too. a kind of a punchline without a punch but a cool, poetic echo. I really like it. It's music.

Happy new year, Ari!!! Yay! Felix and Mack are touching hands and I look like the sicko guy meme "yesss... hahaha... yeassssss!!!" Also, don't be so hard on yourself, Ari. You're your worst critic. It's pretty clear OOTB is a work of love. It's such a beatiful display of art and making comics are incredible difficult (I just saw some artists on Bluesky commenting on how difficult is to make and finish any comics, so progressing on it is a huge feat!). I totally concur! Work as it's best for you! ;)

HANDS! TOUCHING HANDS!!! Also happy new year!! And for what it's worth it's been my experience that we have to let ourselves work in the way that...well, works. Even if it feels like going backwards or even if it feels counterintuitive.
