New Patch: Berry the Hatchet
🕑 Added 2022-07-27 02:32:31 +0000 UTCAlright, so that took a lot longer to code than we may have expected, but there's a really tremendous amount of content packed into this patch -- 120+ pages of smut alone, nevermind all the plot and dungeon.
So, this patch includes a new dungeon for Berwyn which neatly ties off his arc and brings him more or less to a feature complete state with not just a lot of new content, but a lot of changes to him.
You've probably already noticed that while Berwyn always had a dearth of content outside himself compared to most of the cast, your dogboy companion has gotten little to no new support in quests and events over the last year. Berwyn's original writer left the community some time ago, and I brought B! onboard to finish his character arc off with the aplomb only a writer of his caliber can. However, I made the decision that it would be unfair to burden another writer with an extra companion. Rather, we'll be transitioning him into a normal NPC.
Asking B! to wrap up another writer's biggest project is enough of a herculean task on its own -- one which he stepped up to admirably, as you'll soon see -- but the decision to cut Berwyn's Companion content was mine, and made from the beginning. As of this patch, Berwyn is no longer a companion. He is still around, and almost all of his old content is still accessible since he rarely interacted with things to begin with; you just can't add him to your party anymore. This applies from the moment you beat Matiha in his first quest onwards.
The good news is, without having to worry about supporting him constantly on your adventures, this has given us the opportunity to really give Berwyn some incredible mutability; the kind that would be impossible to support long-term the way we do with Companion characters -- Etheryn herself already stresses what we can and should do with a character you can bring with you. The art that comes with this post should give a clue as to what you can do with him (or not, if you like Berry just the way he is).
I know Berry has his fans, so for those of you who like the boi, I hope the quest and all the content it brings is a fitting consolation to not being able to bring him along on your adventures. There really is a ton of it. And for those of you not into big-dick femboys, the ending of this quest might just give you something to enjoy about Wynne too!
0.5.7 Patch Notes:
- Berwyn can no longer be recruited into the party, though he's not gone -- he'll be found in the Guests tab at the inn after you help him against Matiha the first time.
- A week after completing the Winter City dungeon and Berry's first quest, a mysterious 'mander mage will approach you in the inn. Help her find Berwyn, and she'll help you both find Matiha.
- If you accept the 'mander's quest, you'll be taken to a very unique dungeon that's going to play some mind games with you! Read carefully...
- When it's all said and done, there are a frankly stupendous number of choices you'll be making which substantially change a pair of characters' content. Said characters also have a lot of new sex content -- over 100 pages of just pure cheek clappin', all courtesy of B!
- Matiha has a scene with the Behemoth (by Tobs), too.
- Berwyn has a whole assload of new busts by DCL (with edits from Moira). Matiha has new busts by Moira. The 'manders on the quest have busts by AnonArts.
- Drifa also has busts now! (By Moira)

I said the same thing about the sheer amount of Futa/gay in TiTS, but the response I got was something along the lines of "This is what the main audience wants. There is other (non-gay) content for you as well, but most updates aren't going to be like that" I dislike the reasoning, but I understand it. If you want more content like that in the game, write it. I'm sure Savin wouldn't mind getting submissions for content like that, it would just need to be coded into the game. Personally, I'm happy with the content that has been coming out (for the most part). The Futa/gay stuff doesn't interest me in the slightest, so there were a couple patches I skipped out on, but I'm not going to complain every time that happens.

The only way I could see Berwyn as a likeable character was that he was so incomplete and so bland, that it was easy to kind of assign stuff to him. Mechanically he was kind of not helpful, and story wise he was boring. This way, I'll probably be much more interested in actually seeing his story to completion instead of looking at in my log and going "nah. I need to go find winterstem for yet another reason for someon" I shouldn't want to find winterstem more than I want to interact with an NPC or comp

You don't have to take the non-male characters with you. As for interactions with male characters, it always felt like there was a lot between random encounters, Hawkethorne, and heading south and east. As for getting rid of Berwyn as a companion, all I can say is good. He was the least interesting character. I hope to see more companions, of all sorts, but I think scrapping him, especially given that his writer has left the project a long while ago, is probably for the best. Or rather, scrapping him as a comp. He definitely wasn't adding anything meaningful to the party mechanically that someone else wasn't doing better, and was just...boring. We need to see what happens with the rest of the mino area since that one's not done yet, and what we may or may not get out of it. Besides, you're kinda looking in the wrong place if you expect the most interesting interactions in either of the CoCs or even in TITS to be with companions. I've always found the most interesting storylines and arcs to be the side NPCs.

In all fairness, most of the writers are probably straight; you wouldn't want to write gay stuff if you weren't into it either. I think they ought to have writers that ARE gay/bi, but you can't expect most of them to be. I'm bi too, I understand the desire for more male characters, but is that really enough for you to move on to some other game? In my case, if I'm just not feeling what CoC2 has, I find something else for the time being, then come back later when I feel like it. Just kinda seems like reacting this strongly is unwarrented. Also, you don't like femboy Berwyn? That was the major appeal for me when I first encountered him.

Losing Berwyn as a companion leaves the overall party feeling very stagnant and there's no longer enough diversity. I literally joined this Patreon so that I could download the older version (0.5.6). Hope this decision is reversed, but I won't hold my breath.

We still lost a male companion who will now be replaced with another Big Titty Lady. It also rubs me the wrong way that the choices are femboy Berwyn or... Lady Berwyn, because heaven forbid not everything become a woman, when he explicitly said previously in-game the feminization was forced on him. I think it's okay to be uncomfortable with that.

Here's the thing, depending on your choices at the end of the questline, Berwyn doesn't have to become a woman, he can stay a he. Honestly, I'm just glad they are gonna do SOMETHING with Berwyn, rather than let them stay unfinished.

I won't lie, I've been thinking on this since this dropped. And... I might end my sub after this. Knowing we lost one of the three male companions, only to know he's going to be replaced with YET ANOTHER big titty girl when that's literally the entire part as it is unless you DON'T have big titty Etheryn and discounting TWO boys, that's literally... Over half the party being big titty women. And as someone bi, I'm already feeling the frustration on how many female and futa characters there are compared to male NPCs AND I'm already feeling left out of how most preggo content just isn't for the PC. I'm just overall frustrated. IDK, you guys do you, I'll go find my kicks elsewhere, I guess.

I also liked Berwyn a lot, I have to say: it's a sad sendoff, but he's not gone. Without spoiling, he's actually a really available NPC now with a lot of content (and probably more in the future, if I had to guess). You don't have to say goodbye to the guy, you just don't get to have him fight with you. It's like a friend moving a bit farther away; you don't see him as often as you used to, and maybe you two are doing very different things in life, but you're still friends. In Berwyn's case, you can be a hell of a lot more than that.

The fact that my character is named Astrea made the early conversations in this mission both confusing and hilarious. A shame to see Berwyn leave the party but this seems like a very reasonable solution, all things considered. Looking forward to seeing everything this update has in store.

This patch has transformed a character I never interacted with more than strictly needed to and often forget existed into a character I find myself constantly revisiting after completing the quest chain. I love Wynne! Excellent job devs!

Forgive me, but with this update, I will be ending my sub. Berwyn is the only Companion character I like as a person. To remove him is to kill the game for me. I am sorry. I hope you well in the future, but I won't be downloading this patch.

By the way, there are at least two points in Wynne's story after the reveal that still use a male form of address that needs patching: "You note that it almost looks like he chiseled that straight out of a brick from the fortress." Also, on the Side Quest Completed blurb, it still says Berwyn and uses "him/himself" instead of Wynn and "her/herself." Another set of two errors - when giving Wynne a hug, "he exhales through her nose with a little sigh of contentment" and when doting on her, "It's hard to pull away from Matiha." Quite a few in other instances of interaction with Wynne as well, including older dialogue that existed pre-patch that hasn't been updated. It'd be worth checking again.

I'm genuinely considering not updating my game (or at least saving the older version) and dropping my subscription to just focus on TiTS and this game is the only reason I joined patreon so I'm very torn. This was hands down my favorite game I'd ever played and he was on of the reasons I loved it so this leaves me feeling terribly conflicted. I think I'll try the questline but I'm backing everything up first, and it will likely lead to the end of my interest because I feel like he was one of the main draws to this game for me. I adore Brint and Arona but Berwyn felt more versatile both in combat and in his companionship. Honestly saving him and saving Kasyrra were my main goals so this will drastically alter the whole experience for me and I'm not sure it's worth the emotional or financial investment without him by the main characters side. I hope to be proven wrong, but this was immensely disheartening to hear and makes me fear other things I loved will be drastically changed or outright removed.

I must say I'm terribly disappointed, he was one of my go to companions and this will drastically change my gaming strategy as well as deprive me of one of my favorite characters tagging along. I honestly wish this happened to Etheryn instead as her story leaves her spending much of her time back home. Do we still have access to his bad(or very good) end sequence at least?

Definitely a shame, Berwyn was second in my fav companions; but it's a hard position to be in and thanks to B! for finishing his story. I'm sure I'll love whatever you came up with! I am curious if there is any plans to maybe add another male companion to the group to balance things out? No idea how Viv identifies or if new new companions are something you all are comfortable discussing, but my partner and I were both a little sad to hear we're down to two guys in our party.
