Sometimes people just see colorism and it may not really be there. The mom was good abs was dark skinned and there were several other dark-skinned people in the movie that were good. And both girls had problems in their relationship. Marti's relationship wasn't necessarily bad. The man she was with was a criminal but he didn't treat her bad. They actually worked. There were only 2 lightskinned people in the movie. I'm not saying colorism don't and didn't exist, because it does, but sometimes it's about perspective.

Thank you Michael for this request. This movie is a love story & good brother bad brother story. It was filmed in Houston & the accents were horrible. Fun fact: Allen Payne & Jada Pinkett both appeared on the sitcom A Different World. Colorism was a huge part of this movie. The good brother was light skinned, the glue that kept the family together & was in a good relationship & the bad brother was dark skinned & problematic. The light skinned woman was a good relationship & the dark skinned women were in relationships with damaged & broken men. You should react to the movie Sugar Hill if it’s not already on your list. It starrs Wesley Snipes. It’s the mirror movie of Jason’s Lyric.
