The Great intelligence first appeared the second Doctor era first in the 1967 story The Abominable Snowmen and then the 1968 story The Web of Fear. In expanded media it is said to being know as a Great Old One from the previous universe.

The voice of the Great Intelligence is Sir Ian McKellen, AKA Gandalf and Magneto! Good pick for a returning classic villain (that's why the Doctor says it "rings a bell" - those episodes were many lives ago for him, in black and white in fact)

The great intelligence is a classic series villain that invaded the London Underground with robot yeti. Also the whole Clara plot is a example of how watching on broadcast was different to watching now on streaming as Jenna Coleman was very publicly announce as the new companion who would debut in the Christmas special long before Asylum of the Daleks broadcast.
