UFC and Boxing not only have a ton of similarities to fighting games and smash, but they also have a lot of chirping going on in the audience. Dudes literally get booed during their intros. I’m not the type of guy who gets into being disrespectful at a sporting event or esports tournament, but I think chirping in smash should be the norm. The problem that I’ve seen is, most crowds at smash tournaments often cross the line or are just extremely obnoxious. A lot of smash players suck at chirping.

Fwiw, about joshmans streaming, I don’t think it’s black and white when it comes to being entertaining while playing melee or else no one watches. There’s def still a big chunk of people who don’t expect hboxenergy while ur grinding the game w other top players and would much rather watch a stream of everyone just being themselves and doing their best to get good at the game we all love. Might not get as many views, but def an audience that would appreciate the high quality gameplay and vibes

Also beyond the big calls for ejections by NBA players, you can see in podcasts and interviews that the “smaller” instances of jeering and chirping also affect the players and they do indeed complain about it similar to how the Yard boys are doing here (ie. Lebron complaining about Celtics fans)

I figured that when i got later i the premo. Mele is just a little smaller community than what im used to so didnt know how its viewed. Also obviously not talking local events bc thatd be crazy to chirp at

No I completely understand that part of it i never excluded single player e sports just was curious how its viewed. Im not also saying harass the players with chirping but a few ooos and ahhs arent bad and a some reactions to hits/moves shouldnt be frowned upon like josh says he frowns upon it. Shouldve phrased my question a little more towards that than chirping in general bc that can go from a friendly "go person" to mentally harassing people.

Chirping in one player competitions like tennis, chess, golf gets you tossed out. Melee is a mental game as well and chirping at one person can push it to someone else’s favor. So no, it’s not dumb, comparing it to group sports and leaving out all of the 1 person sports that ban chirping, however, is a bit dumb (not saying you are, just widening your perspective)

I mean different communities just have different cultures, you mention "any other e sport or actual sport" but if you chirp during a tennis match you'll likely get thrown out. Usually in melee the cheering is only an issue when the crowd is literal inches away from the players, during big matches where the people play on an isolated stage there's usually way less complaining about the chirping.

Well yes of course there is people that take it too far but i understand bc mele is a lil different for sure just some of his takes were weird like oooing after he messes up or something bad happens to him crowds gonna react how they react thats just apart of the atmosphere but mele again is a very different e sport space than major other ones and it is solo like you pointed out so I understand why its more frowned upon in mele scene thank you

It's a bit different when you're chirping at just a guy instead at a whole team. if you follow the NBA, you'll see every week or two a headline about a star player getting a front row fan ejected for heckling too aggressively and/or too personally.

Im not very into mele or smash but understand the terms and who they are talking about. Am i weird for thinking josh and them getting upset at people chirping at the players on the setup is dumb. If you put yourself up there your subject to the audience. Same with any other e sport or actual sport. Chirping is just apart of the scene of playing infront of an audience. Maybe mele just too small for that type of crowd but that should be apart of crowds in any sport/esport.
