Toilet books are a pre-cell phone phenomenon. We usually had magazines but some books, there was a whole magazine rack in our bathroom while I was growing up. It's not really a different concept than scrolling on your phone while you go.

Mfers have “toilet books”??? I spend a lot of time on the toilet, I got fucked up bowels, but I have never once considered having toilet books. Also I’m on Nicks side about the coffee table books. I will add though, I have a narcissistic tendency to choose “sophisticated” ass books like Neil Degrasse Tyson’s latest book, on top of one of my Turkish language learning books, and once I finish it, I’m putting Carl Sagan’s Cosmos on top. Perhaps none of those are very good for “casual perusing”, but I want people to know I’m smart. Coincidentally, it does not matter because no one comes over 🤣 I’m very antisocial, to be fair, and all my friends are introverted like me and none of us meet up irl that often. Social anxiety is a bitch and a half.

The content is what makes a coffee table book a coffee table book. Generally they are bigger, but that's more because it's more suited to the type of content in a coffee table book with large, well printed pictures etc rather than it being inherently about the coffee table. Now whether Nick's book is actually coffee table or more toilet is a different matter.
