I’m on the same page as Lud on prayer. I’d say prayer is essentially a form of meditation, which is renowned for being healthy and fantastic for mental health. My personal belief is based in science, with a spiritual twist. Like the first law of thermodynamics says that all energy is constant. It cannot be created or destroyed, so our “energy” or “soul” or “consciousness” must go somewhere. And when scientists say prolific things like “you are made of star stuff” and “we are the universe experiencing itself”, it just further makes me feel that all things are connected. Humans, dogs, whales, ants, trees, bacteria, asteroids, stars, anything. We’re all just matter and energy constantly transforming and transferring. My prayer, or meditation, is not to a higher single being or multiple beings, it’s to all things. To the universe itself, that I am a small connection to. We me be tiny in the vastness of space and seemingly meaningless, but I believe despite that, all things, including us, have some equivalent value.

This is way late, but I want to help the Mogul Moves accountant (Nick Wang?). At @1:08:40 they discussed writing off food for dinners and/or company parties. First of all, pretty much all food and meals can be expensed for the Income Statement. Income Statement expenses do not always match income tax expenses. There are rules for deducting food/meals as an expense for taxes. For years 2021 and 2022, you could deduct 100% of restaurant meals. For 2023, the rule is changing back to the old rule, where 50% of meals are deductible (if at lease one client is there or 50% or less of the employees), and if 50% or more of the company employees are present, it can be 100% deducted on the tax return. This 100% deduction includes food for company parties.

Morals are decided by the whole of society at the time of the question. If the majority of people thought gambling was fine and a non issue, then it wouldn't be an immoral act. Addictions are a case by case basis. Something you're addicted to could be a non issue for other people. Video games, weed and alcohol are all common examples of this. Generally it being an addiction comes down to the loss of control over using it, and the continued use of it despite it being a net negative in your life.

one thing i noticed, speaking of nick's story with his friend obsessed with the bet, is that mormons seem to have a hypersensitivity to money. all of my mormon friends are middle class and i distinctly remember if they covered me on lunch or something that a few would ask me to pay them back as soon as i could (even though a lot of the time it was their parent's money) i always did as soon as i was able, but some people were just uncomfortable insistent on it if that makes sense. it may have just been those few friends, but it was enough people to wonder if it was a trend/trait.

I grew up in an Evangelical environment, and every night before bed until I was like 12, I prayed to God. My prayers were always about wanting my family members and friends to be healthy and, much like Nick said, were definitely tied to my fear of death. Once people that I cared about started getting sick/family members died and shit like that, I realized that praying obviously wouldn't keep people safe, and that even on an individualistic level it didn't help me cope with my severe anxiety issues. I think that it can be super helpful to believe in a higher power that always has your back, but when you can't be straight up blindly faithful like that it's pretty stressful.

Honestly, I think Mormon missions are all about surrounding young men with the most religious environment possible during the time period when they're most likely to question their faith, especially if they were to go straight into an environment like a secular college. Sending 18yo boys off on missions and getting 18yo girls married and pregnant is the easiest way to keep them in the fold during the "danger years" when young adults start to really think for themselves and question their upbringings. (My ex-Mormon friend also tells me that the very common joke among Mormon missionaries is every person you convert takes 5 pounds off of your future bride's waistline or something along those lines...)
