I think the boys are conflating a fear of death and a fear of what comes after death. Aiden is scared of the latter, but what *everyone* is scared of in a instinctual way is the process of dying, especially the discomfort/pain you're likely to feel during those moments. But a fear of what comes after is something that isn't nearly as common and one that I can relate very strongly with Aiden to.

I think I agree with Aiden, fear of things is not routed in them ending your life. It's also about comfort, and we as a species have become less able to deal with changes to our expected comfort, and part of that comes out as fear of things that are pretty mundane. But also as a kid I ran between 2 trees that were very close to each other, and ran mouth first into an orbweaver web and it crawled out of my mouth, over my face and I was so terrified I couldn't even move. Actually petrified as a child. Now I dislike all spiders but orbweavers in particular (super safe, harmless little outdoor idiots) mortify me to this day. They send shivers through my entire body even though I logically know they're just dumb little bug eating nothings.
