I think the biggest effect on our understanding of "competence" from any aspect. We have the most people on Earth. There are so many kids there aren't enough teachers. These people of low emotional intellegience, and vice versa have always been around. Just like everything right now there is just MORE. Confirmation bias just is even harder to avoid cause the entire total of the average has grown which means everything beneath and above has. I was an alternative school kid but I am going to community college. I knew people who attempted and succeeded at ivy league stuff. But when you have in my cases classes of 30-40 kids in elementary and above. Its just not possible all get the same level of education. I think the worst part for intellegience is actually the unschooling unlearning anti "book" side of tiktok Mom content. Very overlapped with Anti vax. I think aiden and nick have way more in common than don't. I just think nick has some nuance where as Aiden sweden lover dog hater has to much near sociopathic pragmaticism. I think anti phone policies are great per classroom. But school was a nightmare for a lot of people. having a phone at lunch can save you. yes social skills this, yes social skills that but you would rather the child on their phone. Than pushed into a bad place. Parents also don't want to believe their child is struggling or behind. They think that reflects on them. Some parents if theyre dumb don't push their kids hard enough cause they think they have no chance cause they didn't try or have the right motivation either. I dont think skibidi toliet is the main thing holding people back. I also don't think just going outside leads to the best situations. I got to hard drugs faster talking to students in my school than some gamers i knew in oregon.

I'm 23, and I agree with Aiden. Many people my age and younger are helpless and borderline nonfunctional, and I've seen none of this supposed emotional intelligence Nick is talking about. I know *many* people age 17-25 that are completely socially incompetent, financially incompetent, mentally incompetent, and just all around incompetent. Never thought id see the day where I disagree so strongly with Nick and agree completely with Aimen. It doesn't really matter that the kids are more in tune with culture, when it comes with the massive downsides Aiden mentioned (plus more he didn't mention).

i'm a late-20s math teacher for high schoolers. i use tiktok pretty frequently myself so im pretty familiar when my students reference all the different jokes, and I'll call them out when they say some of the actually inappropriate stuff ("gyat", "yes king", etc.). It's pretty acutely damaging to my class population because I have mostly kids that are diagnosed on the spectrum or have some form of ADHD. One thing i've noticed is that when I do demand students put their phones away they get extremely defensive, almost like drug addicts. I hold the social media companies responsible for that; they have created an infinite stream of algorithmically distributed dopamine available to kids at any given moment. I also think parents have no fucking clue what they are letting their kids into when they allow them to use their phone unsupervised. I'm with Nick; kids need to have their phones taken from them in order for them to actually focus and build some knowledge. Also wanted to mention "packet yo" guy--I know he was just a troubled kid when he said that stuff, and I'm sure his classroom environment was probably excruciating and mind-numbing, but god damn, that toxic, anti-intellectual mentality has trickled down to kids today. Kids (and I know their parents are responsible for this) do not value education in the same way me and my friends did when I was their age. I am not making a data-driven argument here; I am sure my viewpoint is filled with bias and blind spots, but I am so worried about contemporary high school kids being manipulated by corporations and evil political forces when they become adults. They will be so willing to find the easiest, most comfortable narrative to latch on to when shit hits the fan (as if it hasn't already) that they will be primed to forget about climate change or blame minorities for all their problems.

CRAZY hearing slime cite Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud after an AI brainrot quiz. also aimen is getting to a good point about younger generations' consumption of media, but the issue is more likely about the proliferation of "new culture" that discourages criticality, context, and nuance, or a historical and informed understanding of concepts. brainrot memes are whatever, but when it comes to the exercise of critical thinking and the relationship of receiving information to the systems that propagate mis/disinformation or harmful ideas, developing minds who aren't given the opportunity to exercise criticality are left with endless slop that they aren't equipped to challenge/trouble. basically, it's not kids' fault for being drip-fed the most algorithmically-boosted garbage content; it's a larger issue about the profit interests of churning harmful slop, and kids are at the forefront of consuming it the quickest, which leads to the degradation of their opportunities to genuinely learn fruitful things beyond 60-second windows. these are all generalizations, there's a bigger socioeconomic issue at hand, discussions about culture and consumption are merely symptoms (ie. superstructure), etc etc. fight me in the yard premo comments section about class analysis, hegemony, dialectical materialism or whatever

I work at an elementary school and I really don’t think you guys are giving these kids enough credit. They are growing up during a really stressful time in a rapidly changing environment both on and off line. Despite that, they are still all very passionate, driven, curious, and most importantly funny. I run the student news and during one of our recent recordings as I was explaining some of the rules when one of the kids whispered to his friend “Yapper is yapping” and that shit had me cracking up. Also some of those kids can read out loud way better than I ever could at their age.
