biggest indicator of this is the progression on pet names. pets used to have names that weren't even close to human and as they've become more a part of the household it's gotten to the point where it's on trend and hilarious to give your pet a name that's so human that it's boring. when a pet is seen as family you want to take care of it like family

I believe animal rights has progressed because we stopped seeing animals as tools to be used and more of another creature that has feelings, but also I don't think that people are actually spending thousands of dollars and going through difficult routines for their animals because of any social pressure, but maybe a culture shift in the idea of how animals have feelings and are smarter, so they deserve more. I live in Denmark, in my opinion, even that is really irresponsible and actually cringe compared to the dog argument. Yeah crime rate is lower in Denmark than most countries, especially the US, but that doesnt mean i would leave my baby unattended ANYWHERE at any point. Have you tried to save a pet from anything that isn't as obvious as a broken bone? It is not cost effective to save a pet in modern America. Your examples are preventative but when your pet gets sick suddenly and it's something that requires a scan and maybe surgeries you're already over 10k easy. Also Obama didn't write dogs into the ACA so pet insurance is just a reminder of how much worse insurance was before the ACA with the pre-existing conditions :( Thanks Obama :(

Aiden is so so right about dogs, and all pets, being treated differently in the past 20 years or so. We used to have outdoor only dogs and cats, declawed cats, feed them scraps and the cheapest kibble, and you would NEVER have "wasted" money on a life saving surgery for a pet. Forget about ethical breeding practices as well. Animal rights have come so far in my lifetime and I'm not even 30 yet.

Not on Aiden's side in any way shape or form, however I just got shamed by my entire family and most of my friends for wanting to put my cat down (18 years old riddle with tumors and a hole to the bone on one of his back legs, it was time. Did it 2 days ago) So that cat suffered for a extra 2 months just because I was concerned about the feelings of the people around me. When I worked at shake shack forever ago, some guy came with his 2 birds on his hat. He set the hat down at a table outside, and came in to order while the birds waited on the hat outside by themselves. He chilled outside til he got his food and fed his birds french fries while he ate his burger. Against Aiden. We didn't know 60 years ago about a lot of the veterinary tech we use today making it more cost effective to save your pets in modern America. It doesn't have to do with how much people have in disposable income. Like we didn't know that golden retrievers are prone to stomach twists so now we have preventative surgeries to help (which are commonly done during spays and neuters to make the procedure even more cost effective) and we didn't have things like the rabies vaccine or parvo treatment 60 years ago.

Declawing your cats and prong collars for dogs are two very recent examples of cultural/societal "pressures" influencing how we treat our pets sometimes even medically. You will also still see the random old person on the internet who will bark at young people who "treat their dogs like children instead of pets" which again just kinda shows how dogs/pets are evolving into being seen as "more so" family instead of the family animals. You could say that means more families are at least willing to financially cripple themselves to save them (vs. old yeller'ing them).

The main issue with pet dogs in enclosed public spaces is they can easily distract service animals from doing their job. Unless the owner has full control over their dog and can keep them calmly away from service animals they shouldn't be in restraunts and grocery stores etc.
