Someone probably said this but break fluid is there because the mechanism that pushes the break pad into your wheel uses pneumatics. Basically it uses pressure created from the compressed fluid to move the pad into the wheel and slow you down. Tried to make that as un-technical as I could for y'all

Brake fluid works off pressure. Connected to your brake pedal (on most cars) is what is called the master cylinder, which is a cylinder with a sort of plunger in it that is tight to the sides of the brake cylinder. When you press the brake pedal it pushes on this cylinder, pushing the fluid to your brake calipers and causing them to clamp your brake rotors and stop the car. In order for your brakes to work properly it needs to be all brake fluid in the brake system and no air, and when you open this system in any way to replace parts, or change fluid you have to bleed all the air out of the system for the brakes to work properly. If you cut someone’s brake line, the brakes will not work at all right off the bat because there will be no pressure in that system to clamp the brake calipers.
