asking "are you x?" simply sets the dynamic for the interaction. If someone approaches you saying "ludwig?" you have 0 clue if that person is a fan, someone you met earlier, an old friend, etc. "are you?" isn't a tell that the person is a pokemon card collector, it simply is the default polite way of engaging the person they think they recognize. Believing that this person must not be that big a fan if they had to ask feels like a cynical tag you're adding onto the interaction out of having been approached so much in the past. Aimen is definitely right here.

I’m sorry but arguing for brevity over 2 single syllable words just doesn’t make sense to me. The only thing I can see is that saying “Are you X?” can be cynically viewed as a way of siphoning information, where as just “X?” is almost always to get the attention of the person. It also seems like Aiden is looking at it as covering his bases incase he is wrong, where the rest of the boys see it from the perspective of the famous guy, when in reality none of them are the type of person they complain about, who in Nicks shoes would have committed to talking to Not Kyle Mooney. Even Aiden has talked about not talking to Karl Urban because he forgot his name, so they very clearly aren’t collector-types

Slime - Slime is the worst one and honestly a bit sad. I get that to some degree its a character but it still feels like he legitimately doesn't want to be just a Pokémon which I really respect but in order to protect himself against it he needs to block people out from being people. I would find being treated like that really shitty and ultimately I would just not say anything to him. This is the part that really sucks because Slime is the person I think I would love to sit down and just listen to talk about his life and interests for as long as he wanted to talk about them 1-1. Anthony has I imagine has so much more depth to his personality than he puts out with the Slime character that its kinda sad that I would rather skip out on it than have a mediocre photo.

Aiden - As someone who lives in Cape Town South Africa, Aiden's genuine love for humans made me want to reach out and let him know that if he ever comes down and needed a place to crash or really just any advice I would love help. Yeah it is a bit out of touch, but it's probably difficult not to become a bit out of touch when you become a bit famous. I do agree with the idea of respecting their time and only saying something you think is for their benefit. I even think asking for a picture would be too much because it's a bit too self-serving. I'd just be like "Are you X? Oh cool, I love your work, have a good day dude." If there was some particular album or movie or show I loved them in, I'd mention that too. But yeah expecting this specific verbage for figuring out if they are that person is kinda corny. Not everyone's brain or memory works the same anyway. Some people have difficulty remembering faces, whatever. As you said, it's not that deep, say whatever to make the introduction as long as you're not rude. Besides, if they are not actually that person, I don't see why they're saying it's awkward, you can 100% turn that into a funny interaction with the right response, and then just peace out.
