Alright I'll be the nerdy fact checker here: purgatory is a place of purification before going into Heaven, basically all the non-major sin and attachments still on your soul need to be purified out of you before going in. I think what they were trying to say is limbo (also called in Catholic theology the "bosom of Abraham"), which is the middle ground where it's hypothesized all the holy souls waited before Christ took on and redeemed humanity and allowed a way into Heaven

Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival, which is a Christian festival celebrated around the world before the beginning of Lent. The largest Carnival in the world is held in Rio. The confusion is probably coming from the fact that people in NA usually just refer to the entire celebration as Carnival, and not the names of the specific days, because most people here don't celebrate it, even most Christians. (At least, like I said, in NA, which is all I know cause that's where I'm from.) Carnival is considered a huge part of Brazilian culture, and as the daughter of Brazilian immigrants it's definitely a dream I have to one day experience it :)
