I think I can understand Nick's feeling of wanting criticism for his work and people of taste to comment on it. However I also think you are holding on to this aspect that critism must be used to grow, when in fact creating anything is what allows you to grow. Eventually you'll either make something someone "with taste" will critque or something of lesser quality than normal and then people will be able to give meaningful feedback. Late comment but I also just wanna see you guys make things, and I think fans loving it isn't indicative of taste.
